If you have potted or hanging plants outside your home, you know that they usually require daily watering. This creates a chore you must delegate to a friend or neighbor if you go away on vacation. Wouldn't it be wonderful if plants could water themselves? They can, with a little help from you.

First, buy some kerosene lamp wicking at a hardware store. Push one end of the wicking into the soil of your plant and put the other end at the bottom of a container of water. Like oil in a kerosene lamp, the water in the bucket will run through the wicking to your plant as needed. Cover the container of water to slow evaporation. Place plant in the shade during your absence.
