Furniture With Height

A tall piece of furniture can be a useful design tool in a room. The height alone can take your eye up to the ceiling to make the room appear taller. When placed in the middle of a long wall, it can help to divide the expanse and give better proportion to the room or use it as a focal point to anchor your main seating area. A tall piece of furniture can help you make the most of your room while creating interest to an otherwise same-height, ho-hum setting.

Light-Catching Tips

How can you bring light into your rooms when you have few windows? Think about reflection. Bounce the light you do have around your room to maximize its potential. Mirrors are a great way to reflect light, just be careful what you are reflecting. A high-sheen paint on the wall in a light color will work wonders too. Also consider any reflective materials in your room in the form of furniture, fabrics, tabletops and accessories to maximize what light you have. So, go towards the light and enjoy.

1930's Style

Are you attracted to the 1930's style known as art deco? It was a direct reaction to the "machine" era and reflected a sense of power in its design elements. Floors were hard and slick. Furniture and architecture shapes were clean and rounded. Blonde wood was used with geometric patterned upholstery. A trademark design was the "ziggurat" which was a stair step interior design. Lamps made of steel and rounded sconces on walls brought light into the rooms. Color was either bold monochromatic, or, in Miami architecture, tropical. Accessories included round mirrors and figurines. So, if you want an art-deco feel, look for these elements when selecting pieces for your home.

Give Yourself A Feelings Check-Up

Several times a day, ask yourself "What am I feeling? Anger, shame, sadness, fear, joy, surprise, acceptance, contempt, distress, sympathy, happiness?" It's healthy and important to identify what you are feeling. Make this feelings check-up a routine part of your day: check in when you wake up or go to sleep, at mealtimes, or during your evening walk. Just make sure that you spend some time every day getting in touch with you.

A Room's Rhythm

Is your room boring because there are few items and they are predictably placed? If a room doesn't have rhythm, it can look stagnant. To create a dancing flow for your eye to follow you can consider these tips. Different heights of objects are a must, from the floor to the ceiling. In between, objects need to "flow" from one to another. Don't fill the whole room. Instead, let your eye follow accessories and furniture around the room in a gentle up and down motion. A tall lamp next to a medium height plant and wingback chair and ottoman is a pleasing composition. Then perhaps a tall piece of furniture not far away. Then lower again with details that take your eye to the floor again. You get the idea. Just experiment and have fun with it.
