Slow Burn
As we get older, our bodies don't seem to burn as many calories per meal as they did when we were younger. In a recent study, researchers tested an older group of women against a younger group. In the first test, both groups ate 1000-calorie meals. In the second test, the same total amount of calories were consumed by both groups, but they were eaten in 250- to 300-calorie small meals throughout the day.
After the 1000-calorie meal, the older women burned about 30% fewer calories than the younger women did. However, both groups seemed to burn about the same number of calories when their food intake was broken down into smaller meals. If these results are true, it's probably a good idea for most of us to eat smaller, more frequent meals during the day.
