Eleanor Bron would be interesting.

Not Stephen Fry, he would be a very cerebral Doctor, but I think not very believable in action scenes.

Pity John Barrowman is now so identified with Torchwood, he would be a great Doctor.

Tommy Knight or Daniel Anthony from the old series of "Sarah Jane Adventures" would both make fine Doctors, especially the latter. Such a shame when Elizabeth Sladen died

The replacement Doctor is being announced tonight with Peter Capaldi as the bookies new favourite.

Peter Capaldi is a magnificent actor, one of Britain's finest, I would say. Doctor Who would be very well served.

A very versatile actor. I have the DVD of 'The Crow Road' and he's excellent in that. I never watched 'The Thick of It', though, due to the bad language.

I watched World War Z recently where Capaldi played a World Health Organization doctor in Cardiff ...

so he's gone from being a WHO doctor to Doctor Who.

It was on at 4am here and the girl who works for us got up for it. She's not overly impressed with it as she's worried he plays a 'baddie' too well so how will be go with a goodguy roll?

No reason why the Doctor has to be nice - as long as he goes on saving the world he can be quite horrid!

I have a soft spot for Trickster characters, and I think that Capaldi might give a more complex character performance than Matt Smith.
It will also be interesting to get away from the Doctor as an object of passion, it is wearisome to some of us brought up with Pertwee and Baker who were excellent Doctors without the need for fluffy romantic entanglements.

Still think Samuel L. Jackson should have been the next Dr Who. Pulp fiction meets the Daleks "Say exterminate one time i dare you, i double dare you":D . Before it was announced i was quietly thinking Rob Brydon would make a good Dr, but got to admit looking forward to how Capaldi will do the role.

I enjoyed watching the announcement last night but I have to agree with the comments on the BBC website " Presenter Zoe Ball demonstrated why we never see her on mainstream TV anymore, giving a display of such gushing inanity she made Claudia Winkleman look like Sylvia Plath, even introducing 'our very special guest - the Tardis'.".

Claudia Winkleman is actually very bright - but she takes great pains to act stupid, I'll never understand why. You'd have thought her mother would have taught her that clever women can actually do very well.

Zoe Ball on the other hand... perhaps the new Doctor can take her somewhere in the Tardis, and leave her there.

I think he'll be great. I never really 'took' to Matt Smith, but to be fair he had a very hard job taking over from David Tennant, who is my all-time favourite. The 50th Anniversary episode ought to be well-worth watching.

Chris Eccleston is also known as being the 'baddie' and he was Fantastic as the Doctor. I am very exited about Peter Capaldi and can't wait to see where the Doctor is going.

I'll be happy as long as the new series doesn't have any Weeping Angels or I'll never get out from behind the sofa.

Weeping Angels was a excellent idea for a alien villains but my daughter was never scared of them. She even thought the Statue of Liberty Weeping Angel was one of best things she had seen. However just say to her "Are you my Mummy" and she still gets a bit freaked out. At one point even thought of buying gas mask to do that when she is being a pain :-)

Wondering if the River Song character will continue in the next series, or will her last scene be the 11th Dr handing her the sonic as she departs for the library.

I'd love more original creatures, in the same league as the superb Dream Lord (masterfully played by Toby Jones, of course). Give the Angels, the Cybermen, the Daleks (after the 50th, of course) a rest for a while.

River's had her run (heh), I feel. She and the Eleventh should bow out at the same time.

Capaldi should make for a darker Doctor, I hope. More moody than happy chappies Tennant and Smith. Moody and gruff like Ecclescake.

I think River will appear just as often, as hers and the doctors' timelines cross many times and she will be able to regenerate into different actors as well.
