1. BxBarracuda 2. ozzz2002 3. mikegolden
In a tournament where no one finished under par (or even par), Justin Rose outlasted Phil Mickelson to become the first Englishman to win a major since Nick Faldo in the 1996 Masters. Mickelson held a 56-hole lead, but struggles early and late doomed his round to his record sixth second-place US Open finish. Rose finished the final round even par, while two early double bogeys and three bogeys in the final six holes put Lefty at four over on the day, and two strokes behind.
There was no late drama in our comp, as BxBarracuda watched from the clubhouse while the rest of the field ambled in for an easy 6-stroke victory! All four of his golfers had top-15 finishes, including the winner Rose. Ozzz2002 also picked Rose, but Masters winner Adam Scott dragged him down with a +15 performance. Coming in third (with his first-ever post on the forums) was mikegolden, who rode a top-4 finish from Hunter Mahan to the bronze.
Coming into Sunday, roughly 10 golfers were poised for a run at the trophy. Steve Stricker bowed out first, slicing his drive on #2 out of bounds, followed by a shank out of bounds on his 4th shot, and finished tied for eighth with Luke Donald. Donald was also one of those contending, but went +6 on the front nine and was knocked out. Hunter Mahan found himself in the last group, but went +4 on the final four holes and lost out by four strokes. Billy Horschel was also in the running, but slowly faded on the front 9 to take himself out of contention.
Jason Day showed his performance in the Masters was no fluke, and was the leader in the clubhouse for a short time before Rose finished his round, ending tied with Mickelson in second place. Jason Dufner and Ernie Els both finished under par on Sunday, but were so many shots back at the start of the day they never factored in the running. If not for a triple bogey on #15, Dufner could have very well been in the mix.
Consecutive birdies on #12 and 13 gave Rose a lead midway through the back nine, and Mickelson bogeyed #13, the easiest hole on the course, leading to Rose holding on to a 1-shot lead as he parred the final two holes. Mickelson came to the final two holes needing a birdie, but left his drive far short on the par 3 #17 and on #18 drove into the left rough and his second shot came well short of the green. Needing to chip in the shot for a playoff, he sent it scooting past and into the fringe, finishing with a bogey and tied with Day for second.
For our own purposes, the oft-chosen Tiger Woods faltered on Saturday, earning 7 bogeys after a birdie on #1 to put him well off the pace, and finished Sunday +4 to end +13. Lee Westwood tied Tiger for the most-picked (with his #11 ranking), and finished with a respectable 289 and tied for 15th. The third most popular choice was surprisingly Sergio Garcia, who was ridiculed early for his controversial comments on Tiger Woods, and would have finished at +9 if not for a sextuple bogey on #15 on Saturday, sending him into a tailspin to +15 (and just more than $100,000 less to boot).

Very nice work, Illiniman- I don't think that the last putt has stopped bouncing around in the 18th cup yet! Congrats to BxB and welcome to Mikegolden, too.
