That's so weird that you can't search the shortened name! There should be some sort of delimiter in there to allow you to truncate the word. Something like |arkle|. Probably a database thing Terry would have to rewrite (and I'm sure would be a bear). LT, maybe there should be a copy of the list of ones you can't remove...in the first post of this topic? Or somewhere that we can double check? Just a thought. I am sure Terry could fix the issue, but I haven't even asked - it's really a very minor issue in the scheme of things, and he has much more important issues to take care of. It is a good idea to post my list of names I want to remove but haven't been able to, only I am not sure where - most people leap straight to the end, and wouldn't see any earlier entries. If I put it in the first entry, those in the know might take the time to go there and check, but most people just run in and post. Should I copy it over again every time we change pages? People might look to the top of the page, but I doubt that many would ever take the time to go back and scan the entire thing - and as time goes on that will only become more and more certain. For those who are interested, here is my current list of entries that I know should be removed or edited, but which are firmly hiding in the database: Cher = (American singer-songwriter; actress); to be changed to American singer & actress; former partner of Sonny Bono; Best Actress Oscar for 'Moonstruck' Martin Luther = German religious reformer; monk; theologian; to be changed to German religious reformer; his 95 Theses (1517) sparked the Protestant Reformation Rudolph Isley = American singer-songwriter of the pop group 'The Isley Brothers'; to be changed to American singer-songwriter; with his brothers wrote & recorded 'Shout' (1959) Martha J Coston = (description includes her name, since she invented the Coston flare) Arkle - racehorse should be deleted Isley = American singer-songwriter of the pop group 'The Isley Brothers' needs first name added and description amended Diana = Roman goddess of the hunt & the Moon Mars = Roman god of war

Maybe just post the list whenever someone reports one of those that can't be removed or edited? That might be the easiest way to do it for now.
One issue for posting it each time we change pages is that the default number of posts per page is 25 and can be altered (I set it to 30). Some might have it higher or lower. So it wouldn't necessarily be at the top for everyone.

I can only access the database by entering the name. My screen only offers that search field. Possibly I will be able to arrange to have this changed, but that is the way it is right now. If I could actually search the database with a search for key words, whether in name or description, it would be more more flexible!

Your answer: Mary I of Scotland I know royals are being removed because they are in the database only because they are royals. Some royals had more of an impact on history and deserve to stay. This is an example of one. She also did a lot in her life so it is difficult to sum up in the space constraints of the game. But what is your objection to her? I don't see what your objection is to many of the names you list. Perhaps you could let the rest of us know what you object to?

They're not, but I am trying to replace their descriptions with something about them, not just the name of the country - and also trying to reduce the number of times it is necessary to double up. Mary I of Scotland, for example, could have her name listed as Mary Stuart.

Philip (Duke of Edinburgh) is definitely male, but he appears in a list of females. Is it possible to change this?
BTW I post in this thread to bring looney-tunes' attention to certain entries that go against the ideal of the game in some way, not to enter into a debate as to the merits of individual inclusions.

The algorithm Terry uses to have the game select batches of names for each match is clearly set up so that it usually provides all members of the same gender, but with an occasional wild card so that you only get one of a particular gender, which may or may not be the right answer. I believe that is intentional, to just add a frisson every once in a while.

I'm not asking you to enter into conversation, discussion, or debate. Simply putting a name up without saying why you object to it doesn't point out what the problem is.

There's no hope for LT - now the Olympics are underway there will be a lot more titles to follow. This is a quote from the BBC's Twitter account: "There's ( sic) more sirs in the BBC's coverage of the Olympics than in Game Of Thrones."

And if you decide to keep Pippi, there is no 's' on the end of her name. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pippi_Longstocking

I didn't know anything about a controversy associated with Jared Fogle until I read that post and googled him - I will be removing him simply because his celebrity was too passing in an international context and the association that brought him to attention has ceased. Even his disgrace didn't make international headlines, he just stopped being seen in Subway ads, without any fanfare.
The plethora of people who are revealed to have used their rightly-earned fame as a lever into sexual misbehavior are another kettle of fish. Rolf Harris and Bill Cosby had just cause for inclusion, and I don't remember whether or not I decided to remove them - certainly not when charges were first made and they hit the headlines, certainly - innocent until proven guilty and all that. I am undecided as to whether moral turpitude is cause for removal, if the description can legitimately be kept without reference to it, and willing to take advice on it. I'm pretty sure that Jimmy Saville was removed due to strong feeling on the matter.

Kim Philby came up twice in the same set today - once as Kim Philby and also as 'Kim' Philby. The definitions weren't identical but were, as you'd expect, similar.
