Rev. Chad Varah
Your answer: English Anglican priest; founder of the 'Samaritans'

Maybe remove Rev. makes it a bit easy when there is only one "priest" among the options.

Except for those times when there may be another man of the cloth included in the options.

And especially when the name is not immediately "English" - the title has been left in place.

Today's who am I? states Bertrand Russell was an English philosopher when he is Welsh (born Monmouthshire) or British would have been ok.

Changed to British, as per the Wikipedia article. (From the non-British parts of the world, where many of our players are located, these distinctions are not at all clear! While he was born in Wales, most of his adult life was associated with his work at English universities, so British seems the most appropriate description.)

I'm sure that's the best thing to do looney tunes.
Those of us who were born in Monmouthshire know, but many do not, that our county had an ambiguous status until Peter Walker abolished it in the 1970s. The maps showed Wales and Monmouthshire.

Paul McGann

Your answer: English actor; the 8th Dr. Who

Should read: English actor; the 8th incarnation of The Doctor in the Dr. Who film - or words to that effect.

Dr. Who is the name of the TV series as well as books and film. The character is known only as "The Doctor".

From today:

Sir Henry Morton Stanley
American journalist & explorer sent to find Dr. Livingstone

If Mr. Stanley was only American, he wouldn't be allowed to be a Sir. Form I've found he is described as Welsh-American or British-American. I've also seen A,erican by itself but then you would have to drop the Sir.

Yesterday's had the clue "American businessman and philanthropist." Two of the choices were Charles Schwab (the answer it was looking for) and John Jacob Astor, who was also an American businessman and philanthropist.

I'll have to try and find the Charles Schwab entry you mention. When I enter Schwab in my search box, it gives me Charles M. Schwab = "American steel magnate; former executive of Bethlehem Steel". The other one is presumably Charles R. Schwab, but his name won't come up for modification of the entry to identify him in a more unique fashion, maybe "American financier; pioneered discount sales of equity securities".

The entry for John Jacob Astor is: "First American millionaire; fur trader; great-grandson with same name died on the Titanic".

This is a little fussy, but Juan Ponce de Leon contains no mention of Florida, or the fact that he was the first European to attempt a settlement on the North American mainland. I know you don't have much room to work with, but Florida should figure into his bio.

You know, I've seen Henry Handel Richardson (Australian female writer) pop up on more than one occasion, but I've never seen Henry HOBSON Richardson (American architect known for the Richardsonian Romanesque style) pop up even once. Can you check to make sure he's in the list? Henry Handel is in the list twice, once under that name and once under her real name, so you could use one of those listings to put Hobson in there if you haven't figured out how to add a new listing yet.

Henry Hobson Richardson's name often crops up in the conversation in my local pub, particularly when the topic is the Richardsonian Romanesque style.

Just how obscure do names have to be to get onto the list? I realise that recently we've been using numbers 400 to 500 from the list of 500 famous Danes, but my personal opinion is that some of the names being used in the game are so unknown that they should never be included. If the names were to be presented without the nationality and occupation, and without the other names being shown to eliminate some of the choices, I'm sure that most people wouldn't know them from Adam (First man in the Christian bible).

Irrelevant to this thread, but I only know Richardson from a book I picked up years ago called Field Guide to American Houses where the Richardsonian Romanesque style is listed. They mention in the book that Richardson and the style are both much better known in Europe than they are in the U.S., and here I have proof. I doubt I'd meet one person in a hundred in the U.S. who knew who that was. Of course, this is a trivia site.

The entry for Dolley Madison is messed up. It has "American former first lady" twice and then the rest of the entry is cut off mid-sentence. Both Lucio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer are listed as the designer of Brasilia. Looking at their Wikipedia entries, it says Costa designed the plan for the city while Niemeyer designed the buildings.

Dolley has been fixed up. Niemeyer's description says he was an architect who designed many civic buildings in Brasilia, which is pretty much what you suggested. Costa is described as an urban planner who designed Brasilia. I think both of those entries are as accurate as you will get with the limited characters available.

Is it only me, but whenever I see this one, I feel it's a bit snarky and negative:

Anna Kournikova: Russian pro tennis player; model; highest ranking No 8, with no singles titles victories

Okay, she was perhaps more famous for her looks, but it's not a sin to be attractive. And she retired at the age of 21 with serious back problems, so never had much of a chance to mature. She was also a successful Doubles player, where she was the World No 1 and won two Grand Slam Titles (Australian open 1999, 2002).

So how about:

Anna Kournikova: Russian pro tennis player; model; singles world ranking no 8; two Australian Open Doubles titles 1999, 2002

That's a few characters too many, but I'll work along those lines.

I think 'etc' covers it quite eloquently.
