We may only know the name when the BT Tower announcement changes to display it. It's a Boy-George.

Lol! Private Eye magazine seem to have rebelled with their front page display....
It is a plain page with large plain letters
"Woman has Baby"

The Guardian has a link on its Home Page labelled Republican? - click on it and all the Royal baby stories disappear.

The St Andrews paper was predictably suggesting it would be nice if they named him Andrew. They were also going to issue a Royal Baby collectible version of the paper in the town's paper. My alumni announcements had some very nice things about both of them this morning. How could they place bets on the little guy attending his parents' alma mater so far in advance? So let's say I put ten quid down on him attending and I have to wait how long?

The babies born in this island yesterday are going to receive a framed £100 note each, the three of them.

Whereas in the UK they get a (specially-minted) silver penny. Just shows where the money is. wink

Wouldn't that be tempting!

I've been enjoying a brief discussion of a Prince Albert in my virtual blog - no connection, just a happy coincidence.

Can you have two Prince Andrews in one family?

I do like Chavs' idea, Boy, George.

It's a long time since we had a King Richard, we could call him Cliff for short. wink

Could they pick a non-'royal' name, like Jason or Eric?

You mean is there a rule that says they can't? No, there's no rule at all to say what a name can be. Just tradition and personal preference and all that jazz. And then a monarch seems to be able to pick any new name he likes when he finally gets to the throne anyway!

I don't think anyone's expecting a Jason or Eric though. The Duke and Duchess seem to be a pretty conventional pair. I don't know why everyone's fantasising about George so much though.

I'm putting my imaginary money on Alfred - it has royal history, suits modern tastes too with Alfie and Freddie - maybe too modern or ordinaire for William and Kate, mind.

Richard, then the abbreviation will give nightmares to every forum text filter in the known universe.

They normally get at least four names so lots of options.

Do they have to name him after former royals, or can they pick a completely different name, like Jason or Eugene?

((Sorry... seem to have posted nearly the identical question 12 hours after the first, and it's been answered tongue))

They can do what they like... but, and it's quite a big but, this baby is a future king so they will want a durable name and not one which is simply the fashion at the moment. It has to be a name that sounds British (even if derived from another language) and will also be acceptable in the other countries of which he will be king - so I bet someone somewhere has been kept busy finding out if James means something rude in Papua NG or Alfred sounds bad in St Kitts.

I have to admit that the name Alfred is growing on me, if only because Prince Freddy also sounds good - but it may be too English and not Scots enough. So I'm betting James or Richard, if only because I've never liked the name George.

Oooh, they came so close... my dad's name was William Alexander Louis!

(sorry, I'm really not a fan of the name, George, I hope they give him a nice nickname)

Bother! I blame myself for putting that in print. No doubt some royal spider was scanning web forums worldwide and noticed that I didn't like the name so they picked it to spite me. Not that I have rampaging paranoia or anything. cry laugh

I think the only nickname for George is Georgie Porgie. We need some real life Georges to weigh in and explain how cool it is! smile

I didn't really like my niece's name - a very traditional and regular name, a classic, like George is - and was perplexed at my sister's choice. But then I got to know my niece, who is of course adorable and wonderful, and now her name seems very, very pretty to me. Maybe this Prince George will have a similar effect on the non-George-fans.

The embroidery of his initials will be evident on much of his youthful attire spells GAL. A sure target for the bullies at St. Andrews.

Since his Dad's a helicopter pilot in the military, I'd thought Ryan, short for O'rion, the Sky Hunter, might have worked.

Remember, he isn't christened yet. That occasion might see a change and also the addition of a fourth name (Edward to make the initials GALE?)
