Not sure I like the name George for this little prince. George is a good name and I know several lovely men called George (one of them here at FunTrivia). However, it does seem to me that they are just asking for it - he's probably going to get "Georgie Porgie" and possibly "Boy George" as nick-names when he goes to school.

I read somewhere today that their first name isn't necessarily what they will be called once they are the sovereign - such as Prince Charles is possibly going to be King George VII and King George VI's name was Albert... Is this sort of like how the Pope gets to choose his name?

He's Prince George of Cambridge, he's not going to go to a council school full of oiks like I did. He'll go to a carefully chosen prep school, then to Eton or maybe Marlborough. Maybe he'll get a few months in a posh school downunder and/or spend some time doing manual labour on a charity project as William did. All of this will be planned, the people allowed close to him will be vetted, and the chances of anyone bullying an heir to the throne are relatively slim.

That's always been the case, Ladymach - they can choose their regnant name when they accede. No one knows what Charles will do and by the time this little prince inherits they may have dropped the habit, who knows.

Apart from anything else he will be at school with children who have similar names including some called George. No one will torment him about his name, none of the Ruperts, Marmadukes, Montagues etc. There will be police protection officers about at all times, it just will not happen.

I know one woman who will be delighted with the name, that is a woman here locally, she married a man named George but was a bit upset when he insisted that their son be named George too, a family name, it just wasn't used thirty years ago, he was the only little George about but recently there have been more.

Oh, I think they might - kids are kids, whether you go to the local school or a posh private school. And it certainly wouldn't stop the gutter press using nicknames either.

Well maybe, but what I mean is we already have a great George(in FT), and even James or Albert would have bucked the trend a bit.

Prince George is probably the one doing the bullying of the Tarquins, Ruperts, Edgars, Sebastians and Bertrams. Given the amount of boys that will now be called George he will have a few on his side. smile

I don't quite mind the name this child gets - as long as he is in good health.

Well, one nickname for George (as I have a friend of Scottish heritage named that) is "Geordie" or "Jordie", which might slightly mollify the Scots. We're quite hard to mollify though, since we hold grudges for centuries (whereas, my husband is of Irish heritage, quick to temper, easily forgotten - we have interesting food fights lol)

I understand why the names were picked, but I DO think that (as mehaul pointed out) that "someone" or "somepersons" presumably called "advisors" should have noticed that the initials spelled "GAL". George Louis Alexander rolls better off the tongue. Whippings should have begun at noon that day lol.

Perhaps William and Catharine are fans of the "Boy Named Sue" philosophy of child rearing.

Changing the order to produce GLA as initials would only lead the Aussies to pronounce them "galah" - best stick with things as they are. wink I still can't believe that anyone thinks his name or initials will cause him any problems at all, he's going to be king.

I think "girl" is pronounced "gel" rather than "gal" in the circles in which Prince George will move.

Well, it's a done deal now - his birth has been registered and his name is his name. Until he gets to be 18 or king and decides to change it. Which over here doesn't take much. Well, I suppose it takes quite a bit to be king but changing your name isn't difficult for proles over here either. I could just say "I am no longer called 'flopsy the wonder rabbit' and now wish to be known as 'mopsy the magnificent'" and that would, more or less, be it.

Except of course that Terry won't let me change my name but he's just a meanie. wink

Anyway, young prinnie's birth registration details are here should you be inclined to look. I rather liked the way that even though the address provided was a royal palace, the registrar still added the postcode. laugh

Thanks for the link, flopsy. I rather liked the listing under "occupation". It just looks so cool!

I liked data box 17 for any name changes later (like at christening). But, does that mean to keep the records straight, that if/when he becomes king and changes his name, he must dig out this form and officially update it?

Any changes that would warrant an entry in box 17 have to be made within 12 months of the original registration. If he changes his name on becoming king, that will be done by proclamation.
