Regency Rogues Trivia Quiz

In most Jane Austen novels, there is a villain who has designs on the heroine. This quiz is about the 'baddies' in three of my favourite Austen novels. I hope you enjoy it.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 'Pride and Prejudice', who owns the house where Mr Wickham first tells Elizabeth how cruelly he has been treated by Mr Darcy?

Answer: Mrs Philips

Unfortunately for Lizzie, she believed every word Mr Wickham told her, which led to complications later on!
2. Fortune-hunting Mr Wickham attempted to become engaged to a young lady called Mary King, who had an inheritance of £10,000, but she went to live with her uncle before he could do so. Where did her uncle live?

Answer: Liverpool

Elizabeth still could not see what Mr Wickham really was. Mary King probably had a lucky escape!
3. In a letter to Elizabeth, Mr Darcy tells her that Mr Wickham had attempted to elope with his sister Georgiana. Georgiana was only 15 at the time.

Answer: True

It must have cost proud Mr Darcy a lot to share this information with Elizabeth. However it did make Elizabeth start to change her mind about the two gentlemen concerned.
4. Wickham eventually elopes with, and marries, Elizabeths younger sister Lydia. Where do they go to live after the marriage?

Answer: Newcastle

Poor Lydia! It states in the novel that her feelings for Mr Wickham lasted a while longer than his for her, but I don't think it would have been a very happy marriage.
5. Mr Darcy attends the marriage of Lydia and Wickham.

Answer: True

He did, and it made Lizzie love him all the more as she realised he had done it for love of her.
6. In 'Emma', Mr Elton wants to marry the heroine Emma Woodhouse, with her £30,000. What is his career?

Answer: Clergyman

Matchmaking Emma rather likes Mr Elton at first, and hopes he will marry Harriet Smith, a gentle, humble girl of no fortune, whom she has befriended.
7. Where does Mr Elton propose to Emma?

Answer: In a carriage when returning from Randall's.

Emma is horrified! She thinks Mr Elton is presumptuous for daring to aim so high above himself in the social scale. When Mr Elton discovers that Emma expects him to marry Harriet, he is horrified that he is expected to marry so far beneath his station!
8. During the ball at 'The Crown', what did Mr Elton do to incur Emma's displeasure?

Answer: He refused to dance with Harriet.

Mr Elton did indeed slight poor Harriet, but Mr Knightley, the hero of the story earns her undying gratitude by dancing with her.
9. Mr Elton eventually marries Miss Augusta Hawkins whom he meets in Bath. Where does Miss Hawkins originally come from?

Answer: Bristol

Mrs Elton is patronising and vain, and certainly not a favourite with Emma. However, she and Mr Elton do sound as though they deserve each other, and the marriage was probably a fairly happy one.
10. Mr Elton officiates at Emma's marriage to Mr Knightley.

Answer: True

Mr Elton is by this time fairly uninterested in whoever Emma marries, and only hopes that "the young lady's pride would now be contented!"
11. In 'Persuasion', William Elliot is Sir Walter Elliot's heir, and Anne's cousin. He insinuates himself into their family as he is worried that Sir Walter may get married again. Who to?

Answer: Mrs Clay

Mrs Clay is the daughter of Mr Shepherd, a lawyer who manages Sir Walter's affairs. She definitely has designs on vain, unsuspecting Sir Walter.
12. Who wants, and expects, to marry William Elliot?

Answer: Elizabeth Elliot

Elizabeth Elliot is like her father Sir Walter, vain and shallow. William Elliot is in fact very fond of Anne, and would have married her if she had not been in love with Captain Wentworth.
13. Lady Russell does not want Anne to marry William Elliot.

Answer: False

Lady Russell is a very good friend of Anne's, and loves her dearly, but obviously does not have such a good insight into character as Anne, as initially, she seems to prefer William Elliot to Captain Wentworth.
14. Mrs Smith is the friend who reveals William Elliot's true character to Anne. Where does she live?

Answer: Westgate-buildings

Mrs Smith is an old schoolfriend of Anne's who has fallen on hard times. She knew Mr Elliot years ago, and is able to acquaint Anne with his current plans.
15. Mr Elliot's plans come to nothing when he realises Anne is going to marry Captain Wentworth. He then runs off with someone quite unsuspected. Who is it?

Answer: Mrs Clay

I don't think either party were really very interested in the other. It remains to be seen if Mrs Clay ever succeeded in getting Mr Elliot to marry her!
