Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following Austen novels takes the form of letters between various characters?

Answer: "Lady Susan"

Lady Susan, while the more prominent character, is more like a villain than a heroine.
2. Which novel was left unfinished at Chapter 12?

Answer: "Sanditon"

This novel, though left unfinished by Jane Austen, has been finished and published by several other authors.
3. One of the "unfinished" novels takes place mostly in a seaside resort. Which is it?

Answer: "Sanditon"

Charlotte Heywood is one of the most intriquing Jane Austen characters. If only she could have lived a full life!
4. Which of these novels was written last?

Answer: "Sanditon"

"Lady Susan" and "Watsons" were written very early in Jane Austen's career, while "Sanditon" was not written until after all of her other novels.
5. Of these novels, which did Jane Austen actually finish writing, but not publish?

Answer: "Lady Susan"

"Lady Susan" was written in either 1795 or 1805, depending on the source, but was not first published until 1871. That is also when it was entitled "Lady Susan".
6. Jane Austen published 6 novels during her lifetime?

Answer: False

Only four were published during her lifetime, "Sense and Sensibility", "Pride and Prejudice", "Mansfield Park", and "Emma". Both "Northanger Abbey" and "Persuasion" were published in December of the year she died, 1817.
7. Which novel's last written line is, "For myself, I confess that I can pity only Miss Manwaring, who coming to town and putting herself to an expense in clothes, which impoverished her for two years, on purpose to secure him, was defrauded of her due by a woman ten years older than herself."

Answer: "Lady Susan"

This is evidence of Ms. Austen's relative inexperience at writing. Though, I must say that after reading this novel, I don't think that I would be able to keep my opinions to myself either!
8. What was the original title of "Pride and Prejudice"?

Answer: "First Impressions"

All of the others I just made up, but they sound Jane Austenish!
9. Which of these is NOT one of Jane Austen's juvenilia stories?

Answer: "Frederic and Margaret"

Frederic is from the story "Frederic and Elfrida", while Margaret is from "Lesley Castle". All of the others are really Jane Austen. If you would like to read parts of these, go to http://www.pemberley.com/janeinfo/janeinfo.html. Quite fascinating for those of us Austen fanatics!
10. True or False: Jane Austen didn't write plays.

Answer: False

She did in fact write a play called "The Visit: A Comedy in Two Acts". Look out Shakespeare! Here comes Jane Austen!
