Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the least populous county in Pennsylvania?

Answer: Forest County

For this quiz, all population figures are based on the 2000 US Census. Forest County is located in northwestern Pennsylvania. It has a population of 4,946 people and is quite rural. The county seat of Forest County is Tionesta. Cameron County is in the north central part of Pennsylvania, and is also in a very rural area.

Its 2000 population is 5,975, and its county seat is Emporium. Juniata County is in central Pennsylvania. Juniata is often mispronounces as "Juanita," while in reality it is pronounced joo-nee-at-ah (sometimes the 'J' is silent, leading to the pronunciation of you-nee-at-ah).

It has a population of 22,821 and its county seat is Mifflintown. Northampton is the least rural of the counties listed. Its population is 267,066.

It is on the far eastern part of the state (bordering New Jersey). It is located in the Lehigh Valley, which is the location of Allentown, Bethlehem, and Easton (Easton being the county seat).
2. This county is the home of the largest natural lake entirely within the borders of Pennsylvania.

Answer: Crawford County

Crawford County is located in northwestern Pennsylvania. The lake is Conneaut Lake. The key parts of this question are natural and entirely within Pennsylvania. Huntingdon County, in south-central Pennsylvania, is home to Raystown Lake the largest lake in Pennsylvania. Raystown, however, is a man-made lake, created by the damming of the Raystown Branch of the Juniata River.

The largest natural lake with some part of it in Pennsylvania is Lake Erie, but Pennsylvania also shares Lake Erie with New York, Ohio, Michigan, and Ontario, Canada. Pennsylvania's only access to Lake Erie is in Erie County, PA (Ohio and New York also have Erie Counties, however, none of them touch one another). Westmoreland County is east of Pittsburgh, and while it does have some lakes, these are not major bodies of water.
3. What county is home to Pennsylvania's state capital?

Answer: Dauphin County

Pennsylvania's capital is Harrisburg, located southeast of the center of the state. While Harrisburg is on the banks of the Susquehanna River, Susquehanna County is in the northeast corner of Pennsylvania, bordering New York. Its county seat is Montrose. York County borders Dauphin County to the southwest, and it sits on the border the Maryland.

The county seat of York Count is the city of York. The Articles of Confederation (the precursor to the US Constitution) were drafted in York, PA and ratified on March 1, 1781 in York. Carbon County is located in northeastern Pennsylvania.

It gets its name from the large amount of coal deposits found in the region. The county seat of Carbon County is the town of Jim Thorpe. The town was named for Olympic champion Jim Thorpe, yet he never lived there.
4. What county is in the extreme southwestern corner of the state of Pennsylvania?

Answer: Greene County

Greene County is located southwest of Pittsburgh. It is bordered by West Virginia on its west and south sides, Washington County to its north, and Fayette County to its east. It has a population of 40.672, and its county seat is Waynesburg. Washington County is directly north of Greene County.

Its county seat is Washington, PA (know to locals as "Little Washington"). Chester County is in southeast Pennsylvania (just two counties to the west of Philadelphia). Its population is 433,501, and its county seat is West Chester. Fulton County is in the south-central part of the state, along the border with Maryland.

It is very rural with a population of 14,261, and its county seat is McConnellsburg.
5. Chester County was split in 1789. One region of the county remained as Chester County. What new county was formed with the remainder of the land?

Answer: Delaware County

The city of Chester was the county seat of Chester County before the split. After the split, West Chester (about 20 miles west of Chester) became the county seat of Chester County. The city of Chester was now in Delaware County. In 1851 Media, PA became the county seat of Delaware County, and the situation remains the same today. Delaware County is fairly small in terms of land area, but it has a population of 550,864. Lancaster County borders Chester County to the west, and was formed from a part of Chester County in 1729.

Its county seat and most populous city is Lancaster. Lancaster County is well known as the home of the Pennsylvania Dutch, who are actually descendants of German immigrants. Berks County is also in southeastern Pennsylvania.

It was formed in 1752 from parts of Chester, Lancaster, and Philadelphia counties. Its county seat is Reading. Bucks County is one of the three original counties in Pennsylvania (along with Philadelphia and Chester Counties) and its county seat is Doylestown.

It is located northeast of Philadelphia, and it has its eastern border with New Jersey.
6. Out of the US's first forty three Presidents, only one was a bachelor. In what county in Pennsylvania was the only bachelor President of the US born?

Answer: Franklin County

The one bachelor President was James Buchanan-President number fifteen. He immediately preceded Abraham Lincoln, and many argue that it was his inactivity on the issue of slavery that lead to the Civil War. He only served one term from 1857-1861. In addition to being a bachelor, he was the only one of the first forty-three Presidents to be born in Pennsylvania-which I, personally, consider an amazing feat considering the size of Pennsylvania, the role it played in the early years of our country, and its prominent citizens throughout its history.

He was born near Mercersburg in Franklin County, in the south-central portion of the state-bordering Maryland. Franklin County is named in honor of Benjamin Franklin. Blair county is just southwest of the center of Pennsylvania, and Jefferson county is to its northwest. Both are in very rural areas. Mercer county is in northwest Pennsylvania, along the Ohio border.
7. What county's county seat was named for brothers who began that city's major industry?

Answer: Lackawanna County

The county seat of Lackawanna County is Scranton. Seldon T. and George W. Scranton started producing iron rails for the Erie Railroad in the area in 1847. Scranton was incorporated in 1866 and now has a population of 76,415. Allegheny County's county seat is Pittsburgh. During the French and Indian War the English took over what was previously a French fort (Fort Duquesne).

The fort became Fort Pitt, named after British Secretary of State William Pitt. Clinton County is just north of the center of Pennsylvania.

Its county seat is Lock Haven. In the logging age, logs were floated through a series of canals/locks down the West Branch of the Susquehanna River. Lock Haven was named because it was a resting place in the lock system-a haven in the locks. Lock Haven is now the home to Lock Haven University and has a population of 9,149. Philadelphia County contains and only is the city of Philadelphia.

The city/county has a population of 1,517,550-so despite its small geographic area, it is, by far, the most populous county in the state. Obviously the city of Philadelphia is the county seat of the county. Philadelphia comes from the Greek words meaning "city of brotherly love." It was given the name "Philadelphia" from William Penn, the founder of the colony of Pennsylvania. Penn saw Philadelphia as a place with freedom of worship and religious tolerance.
8. The county seat of which of the following counties does not sit on the Allegheny River?

Answer: Clarion County

Clarion County is located in west central Pennsylvania. Its county seat is the city of Clarion (population 6,185). It is also a very rural county. The city of Clarion sits on the Clarion River, and it is about a twenty mile drive west on I-80 from the city of Clarion to the Allegheny River. Armstrong County borders Clarion County to the South. Armstrong County's county seat is Kittanning (population 4,787), and Kittanning sits on the Allegheny River, about 44 miles upstream (northeast) from Pittsburgh. Venango County borders Clarion County to the northwest.

Its county seat is Franklin (population 7,212). In 1859 the first oil rig was constructed in Venango County (near Titusville, PA). Warren County is in northern Pennsylvania. Its county seat is Warren (population 10,259). Warren, PA sits on the Allegheny River, just six miles downstream from Kinzua Dam.

The major purpose of the dam is to provide flood control for the Allegheny and Ohio Rivers.
9. What county is home to the northern end of the "Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania?"

Answer: Tioga County

The maximum depth of the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania near Waterville, PA is 1,470 feet (this southern part of the "canyon" in Lycoming County). The canyon is about forty-seven miles long and was cut by Pine Creek I have seen both the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania and the "real" Grand Canyon in Arizona.

While the one in Pennsylvania is scenic, it in no way compares to the wonder you find in Arizona. Tioga County is in the north central part of the state of Pennsylvania along the border with New York.

It is very rural up there. Tioga County's county seat is Wellsboro (population 3,328). McKean, Bradford, and Potters County are also all on the Pennsylvania border with New York and are all very rural.
10. In which county did 'Pickett's Charge' take place?

Answer: Adams County

Adams County (named in honor of President John Adams) is in south central Pennsylvania, situated along the border with Maryland. The county seat of Adams County is Gettysburg. The Battle of Gettysburg took place July 1-July 3, 1863 during the American Civil War.

It was one of the northernmost battles of the war, the bloodiest battle of the war, and a turning point in the war (up until Gettysburg, the Confederacy was holding their own in the war...after Gettysburg the Confederacy never gained back ground, and the war ended less than two years later).

In Pickett's Charge, a group of soldiers, commanded by Maj. Gen. George Pickett, charged across the battle field and were routed by Union forces. The charge was a disaster and it was a major blow to the morale of the Confederate troops. Pike County sits in the northeast portion of Pennsylvania, and it borders both New York and New Jersey.

Its county seat is Milford (population 1,104). Somerset County is in southwestern Pennsylvania, along the border with Maryland.

Its county seat is Somerset (population 6,762). Somerset County is home to Shanksville, where United Flight 93 tragically crashed on September 11, 2001. Union county is in central Pennsylvania. Its county seat is Lewisburg (population 5,620), home of Bucknell University.
