Answer: Hereford

Hereford is the traditional county town of Herefordshire. It is the host, every third year, of the Three Choirs Festival, alternating as host with Gloucester and Worcester.
2. Which southern port is synonymous with a famous battle of 1066?

Answer: Hastings

The Battle of Hastings actually took place near the town of Battle, some six miles north of Hastings. The Sussex town is one of the traditional Cinque Ports, alongside Hythe, Dover, New Romney and Sandwich.
3. Which town on the River Teviot is the largest in the former Scottish county of Roxburghshire?

Answer: Hawick

Hawick is famous for its Rugby Union team ("The Greens"), and the annual Common Riding festival which commemorates a victory over English raiders in 1514.

Answer: Huntingdon

Cromwell was born in Huntingdon in 1599, and represented the town in Parliament from 1628-29. Major was MP for Huntingdon from 1979-2001. Huntingdon was the county town of the former county of Huntingdonshire; nowadays it is part of Cambridgeshire.
5. Which small town near London is famous for its Royal Regatta?

Answer: Henley-upon-Thames

The rowing regatta has been held on the Thames at Henley since 1839, and is one of the highlights of the social calendar.
6. Which Yorkshire town built its wealth on the wool trade, and is famous for its building society, founded in 1853?

Answer: Halifax

The Halifax Building Society was the largest of its kind in the United Kingdom, before becoming a bank and merging with the Bank of Scotland in 2001. The name Halifax comes from the Old English words for Holy and Face; the head of John the Baptist is rumoured to be buried in the town.
7. Which market town near Edinburgh is the traditional county town of East Lothian?

Answer: Haddington

East Lothian was called Haddingtonshire until 1921. The town of Haddington was the first Royal burgh in Scotland, and was burned by English forces three times in the 13th/14th centuries.
8. Which town in Yorkshire became one of Britain's most celebrated spas in the 18th century, and is the site of two famous flower shows each year, in April and September?

Answer: Harrogate

Harrogate's poularity as a spa declined in the 20th century, but the town is now a major exhibition and conference centre. The Great Yorkshire (agricultural) Show is held in the town every July.
9. Which Welsh town is the site of the world's largest second-hand bookshop?

Answer: Hay-on-Wye

Hay-on-Wye lies on the English border, and actually declared itself independent in 1977! The town hosts a major literary festival each year. Richard Booth's bookshop is the largest seller of second-hand books in the world.

Answer: Hexham

Hexham is the administrative centre of Tynedale District, and was the county town of Hexhamshire until it was absorbed into Northumberland in 1572.
