Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. (2007) I was helping my boyfriend create an online "Fire Sale". We took out the transportation, communications and energy networks in order to create a distraction to cover the fact that we were stealing a great deal of money. We weren't counting on John McClane though - that man never gave up and he proved the death of me. What movie was I in?

Answer: Live Free or Die Hard

Mai Lihn, played by Maggie Q, was impersonating an F.B.I. agent so that they could shut down the power supply to a large part of the country. Unfortunately for her, John McLane, played by Bruce Willis, and Matthew Farrell, played by Justin Long, figured out what they were doing and headed them off at the pass. Mai Lihn proved a formidable opponent in hand to hand combat, but she was no match for the truck that fell on her in the elevator shaft. "Live Free of Die Hard" was the fourth movie in the "Die Hard" series. Split from his wife and estranged from his daughter, supercop John McClane once again found himself in the position of having to bring down a ring of terrorists, who were using the internet to launch a very effective attack.
2. (1948) I was strangled, almost as an experiment, simply because two of my classmates thought themselves to be superior to me, in all ways. They dumped my body into a chest and then threw a party, serving food right on top of me and even inviting my fiancée. Which film was this?

Answer: Rope

Alfred Hitchcock's "Rope" was a brilliant study in suspense, as the two students who had committed the murder let their beloved, former professor know what they had done through hints and innuendos. The murder was the result of hypothetical discussions in the same professor's class, where the right of the upper caste (as they saw themselves) to commit such acts had been discussed.

As Professor Cadell (played by Jimmy Stewart) realized that they had taken what was intended as a mental exercise to heart, he became appalled at their action and his unwitting role in it.
3. (2007) I was an ambitious, if somewhat dishonest news photographer, who was going places - until that nosy Parker got me fired. Then I became some kind of super-villain, when I donned this dark and strange, but compelling spider suit. I ended up dying because I wasn't able to give that suit up. What movie was this?

Answer: Spider-Man 3

Topher Grace played the role of photographer Eddie Brock, who became the villain Venom when he donned a black Spider-Man costume, made from some alien material. In "Spider-Man 3", Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man (played by Tobey Maguire), started out the film with everything going right in his life, but slowly things began to fall apart for him both on a personal and super-hero level.

He found himself having to do battle with his friend Harry Osborn, who assumed the role of Goblin, in order to avenge his father's death, the Sandman, who turned out to be the man who killed Parker's uncle, and Venom.

The personality change that he underwent after donning the suit, made from the alien material, caused his beloved MJ to break up with him and turn to Harry. Kirsten Dunst, James Franco and Thomas Haden Church also starred.
4. (1992) Although you never met me, my wife talked about me a lot while she was playing professional baseball. I died during War World II and I'm told that the scene in which my wife got the telegram informing her of my death was pretty sad. What film was this?

Answer: A League of Their Own

"A League of Their Own" was a fictionalized story surrounding the real All American Pro Girls League, a league started to keep baseball alive during WWII. Married Dottie Henson (played by Gina Davis), had to cope with the stress of having a husband overseas while fighting to keep the league alive and deal with her kid sister's (played by Lori Petty) competitive nature. Throw in Tom Hanks as their drunken manager, who really didn't want to coach girls' baseball and you have the ingredients for a very funny movie. The scene in which Betty Horn received the telegram informing her of her husband's death was a very powerful one.
5. (2006) I was a Section Chief of British Intelligence and I was assassinated because I was selling secrets. However I think that I was really killed just to give everyone's favourite spy his second kill so he could gain his "00" status. In what movie was I shot?

Answer: Casino Royale

Dryden, played by Malcolm Sinclair, was killed by James Bond, played by Daniel Craig, at the beginning of "Casino Royale", giving Bond his second kill and "00" status. In "Casino Royale", Bond foiled an attempt by Le Chiffre, a man who provided banking services to terrorists around the world, to blow up a new airplane, thereby crashing the airline's stock and making a fortune on the market. Unfortunately the money he invested didn't belong to him and he had to set up a high stakes poker game in an attempt to win it back, before the terrorists got wind of what he'd done. Fortunately for the good guys, Bond was part of the game!
6. (2007) I was killed by my jealous, older husband because I was having an affair. He was very clever about it and orchestrated my shooting so that the officer who I was having an affair with looked guilty for my killing. In what movie did I meet my demise?

Answer: Fracture

In "Fracture, Gregory Hoblit gave us a twisted plot worthy of Hitchcock. Ted Crawford, brilliantly played by Anthony Hopkins, shot his wife at a time when he knew that her police lover would answer the call. In a brilliant stroke, which I will not reveal, he managed to dispose of the murder weapon while never leaving the house. DDA Willy Beachum, played by Ryan Gosling, became so obsessed with bringing Crawford to justice, that it cost him a high paying job in a prestigious legal firm.
Embeth Davidtz played murder victim, Jennifer Crawford.
If you have not seen this movie, I highly recommend it!
7. (1996) My name was Jack Harmon and I was on a team of operatives headed by Jim Phelps. I was killed by an elevator, the same night that many of my team members were killed, because Phelps got greedy and sold us out. Fortunately my friend, Ethan, managed to escape and unravel the plot. In what movie did these things happen?

Answer: Mission Impossible

Inspired by the old television series, "Mission Impossible" starred Tom Cruise as the talented Ethan Hunt and Jon Voight as the team leader gone bad. When Hunt managed to escape being killed that night, everyone thought he was the traitor, since Phelps had orchestrated his own death. Using some previous M.I. operatives, who had been disgraced by the organization, Hunt was able to figure out really happened, and avenge the deaths of his team members. Emilio Estevez played the unfortunate Harmon, a computer expert dangerously positioned on top of an elevator, in the shaft.

He was killed by the unexpected movement of the elevator, something that shouldn't have happened as he was supposed to be controlling it.
8. (2006) My death in an automobile accident really happened, although there has been much speculation as to whether or not it was truly an accident. What movie provided a partially true account of how my ex-husband's family, particularly his mother, handled my death in the face of public criticism?

Answer: The Queen

Diana, Princess of Wales, died on August 31, 1997 in a car accident that was caused because the car she was riding in was being relentlessly pursued by paparazzi. "The Queen" dealt with the royal family's response to that death, and how their desire to keep their mourning to themselves altered the way British people viewed the monarchy.

Helen Mirren received an Oscar for her performance as Queen Elizabeth II.
9. (1999) I was shot by my neighbour because he misread certain events and thought I was a homosexual. He had been suppressing his own homosexual leanings all of his life and finally accepted them in making a pass at me. He couldn't handle being turned down, so he came back and killed me. In what movie, about midlife crisis, was I killed?

Answer: American Beauty

In an Oscar winning role, Kevin Spacey gave us Lester Burnham, a man whose midlife crisis caused him to revert to his teenaged fantasies. While he lusted after one of his daughter's friends, his wife was having an affair, and his daughter became involved with the drug dealer who had moved in next door.

In "American Beauty", Lester made a few seemingly innocent choices that inexorably lead to his death.
10. (2005) I was killed with the casual flick of a wand, simply because I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Before I died, I heard a cold cruel voice say "Kill the spare." He obviously meant me because the next thing I knew I was emerging from the wand in order to give my friend time to flee and take my body with him. Which movie was this tragic scene from?

Answer: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

In "Goblet of Fire" Harry Potter, played by Daniel Radcliffe, and Cedric Diggory, played by Robert Pattinson, competed with students from two other schools to be the winners of the Triwizard Cup. Since Harry and Cedric reached the cup at the same time, they decided to touch it at the same time, not knowing that it had been turned into a Portkey by one of Voldemort's Death Eaters. Cedric was killed, because he wasn't meant to be there, and Harry's blood was used to help bring Voldemort back.

When Voldemort, played by Ralph Fiennes, engaged Harry in a duel, their wands connected, and the ghost-like forms of the people Voldemort had last killed (including Diggory and Harry's parents) emerged to give Harry time to escape.
11. (2004) I was a boxer, and a really good one too. I won virtually all my matches, until I came up against a really nasty opponent who suckered me after the bell had rung. I hit the stool on my way down and ended up paralysed from the neck down, dependent upon my trainer to put me out of my misery. Which heart-wrenching film was this?

Answer: Million Dollar Baby

Clint Eastwood both directed and starred in "Million Dollar Baby" taking home the best director Oscar for his efforts. The film won for Best Movie, and Hilary Swank and Morgan Freeman each took home a statue of their own.
Frankie Dunn (Eastwood) ran a gym and didn't train any girls; at least not until Maggie Fitzgerald (Swank) wouldn't let him say no. Between her natural talent and his experience, she couldn't lose; not by any fair means at least.
Paralysed, she still proved to be a formidable opponent, convincing him to show her the same compassion her father had shown a similarly incapacitated dog.
12. (2006) I was murdered in the most violent manner because I had an affair. Unfortunately my husband was a very brutal and unstable African dictator and my affair was with one of his most trusted advisors, a young doctor from Scotland. In which movie was I dismembered?

Answer: The Last King of Scotland

"The Last King of Scotland" told the story of the rise and fall of African dictator, Idi Amin in the '70s, through the largely fictionalized character of Doctor Nicholas Garrigan. Garrigan was a young Scottish doctor who went to Uganda to help out in an impoverished hospital but who managed to catch the eye of Amin instead. Being the advisor to the dictator was fun at first, but as Amin's atrocities mounted, Nicholas found himself trapped in a very untenable position. His affair with one of the dictator's wives resulted in her death and made his position even more precarious. Amin eventually ordered Nicholas' murder, but some of Amin's men preferred to let him escape, so he could tell the world how bad things were in Uganda.
13. (2005) I died of a broken heart, after the man I loved, my husband, became twisted and evil and pledged his considerable powers to the most despicable power in the universe. Many believed that I died delivering our twins, but there was no physical reason for my death. In which movie did I simply lose my will to live?

Answer: Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith

The third movie of the "Star Wars" series sequentially, but the last released, "Revenge of the Sith" told the story of how Jedi Anakin Skywalker became Sith Lord, Darth Vader. Tortured by images of images of his beloved Padme's (played by Natalie Portman) death, Anakin (played by Hayden Christensen) was seduced by promises of power that could help Padme defeat death. Thus, it ironically became Anakin's pledge to Palpatine (played by Ian McDiarmid) and his obedient destruction of the Jedis, that caused the death he so desperately tried to avoid.
14. (2000) My husband and I were attacked by a stranger in our house, in the middle of the night. My husband's head injury destroyed his short term memory, making it difficult for him to follow the clues to find my killer. So he tattooed facts on his body, to constantly remind himself of what he knew. What movie, told largely in reverse, was this?

Answer: Memento

The whole purpose of Leonard's (played by Guy Pearce) life was to find who murdered his wife. However his lack of memory of anything that happened before the night of his injury, made him prey to the manipulations of the people around him. Using a series of photos and notes, Leonard methodically worked out clues that would lead him to the identity of the killer.

Whenever he made what he considered a serious discovery, he tattooed it on his body so that he couldn't ever lose it. "Memento" unfolded the way that Leonard saw it, as he worked his way backwards through clues, to something of a surprise ending.
15. (1991) I was a Lord who was falsely accused of heresy and hanged, so that the sheriff could appropriate my lands. Returning from the Crusades with his Moorish friend, my son found my body, cut me down and launched war on the sheriff, with the help of the people the sheriff had oppressed. In what movie did these events occur?

Answer: Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves

After escaping from imprisonment, Robin of Locksley (played by Kevin Costner) returned to England to make peace with his father who had never wanted him to leave. He was accompanied by Azeem (played by Morgan Freeman), a Moor whose life Robin had saved and who felt honour-bound to repay that debt.
Together with the citizens hiding out in the forests, they helped overthrow the tyrannical rule of the Sheriff of Nottingham (brilliantly played by Alan Rickman), keeping their corner of the kingdom safe for the return of King Richard.
Directed by Kevin Reynolds, "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" has often drawn criticism for the inconsistent accent of Costner's performance.
