Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these colourful names is NOT a suburb of Sydney?

Answer: Blue Hills

'Blue Hills' was a long-running radio serial that ran for over 25 years, finally going off air in 1976. Greenacre is near Bankstown, Greystanes is west of Parramatta, and Rose Bay is in the ritzy Eastern suburbs.

Whilst not a suburb, there is an estate by the name of 'Blue Hills' in Glenmore Park, a far western suburb. Thanks to FT player Guy2030 for this information.
2. Where was the first Sydney NSW Rugby League team based, and what was its home ground?

Answer: Newtown - Henson Park

The Newtown Jets were first formed in 1907, closely followed by Eastern Suburbs, South Sydney, Cumberland, Glebe, Norths, Balmain, Western Suburbs and Newcastle. The first competition was won in 1908 and the premiership was won by Souths. Of these teams, Easts became Sydney Roosters, South Sydney Rabbitohs still exist under their original name, Glebe, Cumberland, Newtown, and North Sydney folded. Balmain and Western Suburbs merged to become West Tigers. Newcastle only played 2 seasons before folding but rejoined the competition in 1988, 80 years later.
3. Which suburb, just west of the Central Business District, was named after an explorer who disappeared in 1848?

Answer: Leichhardt

Ludwig Leichhardt was a German geologist and explorer, who was NOT a good bushman. His first expedition, from Brisbane to near where modern-day Darwin is, only just managed to survive. However, his attempt to reach Perth across the desert was doomed to failure, and no trace of him or his party has ever been found.

Leichhardt, the suburb, is home to Norton Street, one of the best-known restaurant areas in Sydney, and it is also known as 'Little Italy'.

Bass Hill was also named after an explorer, George Bass, who proved that Van Diemens Land (Tasmania), was an island.

Asquith was named after a British Prime Minister, and Wiley Park was named after a local resident.
4. There are quite a few Sydney suburbs that end with the word 'Hill' or 'Hills', e.g. Baulkham Hills, Rouse Hill, Taverners Hill. Which of these Hill suburbs is the furthest west?

Answer: Rooty Hill

Strawberry Hills is not considered a suburb, but is a part of Surry Hills. Both are very close to the CBD, and Pendle Hill is near Parramatta.

Rooty Hill is over 40 kilometers west of the city. Its name derives from the fact that the hill, (which is actually not much bigger than a small mound, and hardly deserving of the name 'hill'), was similar to a hill on Norfolk Island that was difficult to cultivate, because of the tree roots.
5. Sydney Harbour has an extensive public transport ferry network. Where is the terminus for most of these services?

Answer: Circular Quay

The Quay sits at the northern end of the CBD, sandwiched between The Rocks and the Opera House. Ferries, hydrofoils, Rivercats and water taxis all operate from various wharves around the Quay. The International Terminal is a couple of hundred metres to the north-west, almost underneath that other Sydney icon, the Harbour Bridge.
6. Which part of Sydney is known simply as 'The Shire'? The locals believe that their area of Sydney is better than anywhere else on the planet- the rest of us think the locals are a bit full of their own importance.

Answer: Sutherland Shire

Captain Cooks landing point, the Royal National Park, and a few great beaches, and they think they have something special! Sutherland Shire is on the southern outskirts of Sydney, on the way to Wollongong.

Hornsby Shire is on the northern extremities, the Blue Mountains are to the west, and Gulargumbone is a tiny town situated about 500 kilometers from Sydney.
7. The University of Sydney was founded in 1850, making it the oldest in Australia. Which suburb houses the main campus?

Answer: Camperdown

All suburbs listed have a university; University of New South Wales is in Kingsford, Macquarie University is in Macquarie Park and one campus of the University of Western Sydney is located in the far west of Sydney, at Kingswood.
8. Which of these suburbs was chosen as a proposed new airport site in the early 1980s, then dumped in 1998 amidst vociferous protests from the local community? However, construction began in 2018 after a backflip by the Federal government.

Answer: Badgery's Creek

Several options were proposed, including expansion of the small airport at Bankstown, converting the air force base at Richmond, and building a new airport at Milton. Badgerys Creek was finally chosen, and extensive construction took place to provide transport to the new site. It was named Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport after Australia's pioneer female aviator.
9. On January 18 1977, Sydney suffered a major disaster resulting in 83 deaths and over 200 injuries. What was this tragedy?

Answer: The Granville train disaster

Cyclone Tracy hit Darwin, Northern Territory, on Christmas Day in 1974. A hit song by Bill and Boyd was released in 1975 entitled "Santa Never Made It Into Darwin." Darwin is about 4,000 kilometres from Sydney. Ash Wednesday occurred in February 1983 and took place in South Australia and Victoria. The collapse of Warragamba Dam never happened, and hopefully never does.

The train from Mt Victoria jumped the tracks and hit the supports under the Bold St bridge, causing the bridge to collapse onto the train. A telemovie was made in 1998 about the investigation.
10. Brickfield Hill, Central, Chinatown, Circular Quay, Cockatoo Island, Dawes Point, Gallows Hill, Goat Island, Haymarket, Millers Point, Spectacle Island, Sydney CBD, The Rocks, Town Hall, Wynyard. All these places have one thing in common. What is it?

Answer: They all share the same postcode

The postcode for all these city suburbs/locations is 2000. Coincidentally, this is the same year that Sydney hosted the Olympics. Only some of these locations were named from English towns.
