Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Almost everyone has seen the Sydney Opera House, or at least seen a picture of it. It sits on a small portion of the CBD named Bennelong Point, and was opened by the Queen in 1973. What was on the Point immediately prior the Opera House?

Answer: Tram depot

The tram and bus depot had the best seat in the house, as Bennelong Point has magnificent harbour views. The site was bulldozed in 1955 to make way for Jorn Utzon's creation.

Bennelong was an Aborigine befriended by the first Governor of New South Wales, Arthur Philip, and became a liaison between the blacks and whites. He adopted many of the white man's ways, and even went to England.
2. There are many suburbs named after Aboriginal words, that may or may not have relevance to the location. Allawah, for instance, means 'stay here', which sounds more like an advertisement for a hotel than the name of a place! Some names are a bit more descriptive- Woollahra means 'meeting ground', Maroubra means 'like thunder', referring to the surf beach, and Cronulla means 'place of the pink seashells'. Which of these names means 'the place where the eels lie down'?

Answer: Parramatta

Because the Aboriginals did not have a written language, we can only speculate on how some of the modern spellings came about. Burramatta became Parramatta, a large western city suburb on the Parramatta River which is still home to many eels. In fact, the local rugby league club is known as the Parramatta Eels. Panania means 'sun rising in the east and shining on the hills', Como is named after an Italian lake, and Miranda was named after a character in Shakespeare's 'The Tempest'.
3. Tom Ugly's Bridge has many different theories as to why it is named that way, but not one of the theories relate to an ugly man named Tom. I am not going to test your linguistic acrobatics with the origin of the name, but instead I will ask for which suburbs the bridge is in. Do you know?

Answer: Sylvania and Blakehurst

The bridge, over the Georges River, joins Blakehurst in the north to Sylvania in the south. It was opened in 1929 and replaced a ferry service.

The main consensus of opinion lies with a mispronunciation of 'Thomas Huxley', an early settler in the area, but the answer will probably never be known.

The bridge at Drummoyne is the very impressive Gladesville Bridge, Milsons Point is the northern end of the 'Coathanger'- the Sydney Harbour Bridge - whilst the Iron Cove Bridge at Rozelle carries Victoria Road to the north western suburbs.
4. Sydney has over 600 suburbs, so there is bound to be some confusion with similar sounding names. Can you pick the phoney names out of these groups?

Answer: King's Point, King's Hill, Kingsbrook

The 'L' places are all in the southwest, the 'C' suburbs range from the lower North Shore, (Castlecrag) to the semi-rural northwestern Castlereagh, and the 'Glen' suburbs are scattered all over the place.

There are lots of 'King' suburbs- Kingsford, Kingswood, King's Langley, etc, but all the answers I provided are fictitious.
5. Some suburbs share their names with towns or suburbs in other states. A prime example of this is Richmond- one in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Tasmania and TWO in Queensland. Which of these groups of Sydney suburbs share names with other locations?

Answer: Coogee, Epping, Girraween, Guildford, Croydon

There is a Coogee in Perth, Western Australia, Epping is a suburb of Melbourne, Girraween is a town just north of the Queensland/New South Wales border, and is also a suburb of Darwin. There are Guildfords in Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia, and Croydons in Queensland, South Australia and Victoria.
6. I am sitting on a platform at a major Sydney railway station. I can hear announcements being made for trains on the Inner West, Western, Southern, Northern, Blue Mountains, Newcastle and Central Coast lines. All interstate trains pass through this station, too. I am NOT at Central Station, so where am I?

Answer: Strathfield

Strathfield is the only one on the list that has a railway station, and is a major rail junction. Rookwood has the largest cemetery in the Southern hemisphere. Mosman is a very wealthy suburb on the Lower North Shore, and home to Taronga Park Zoo, and Wallacia is a rural suburb on the banks of the Nepean River.
7. If I was driving from Bankstown to Campbelltown, which of these large suburbs would I pass closest to?

Answer: Liverpool

The M5 Motorway runs from near Sydney Airport to Casula, which is just south of Liverpool. It then joins into the Hume Highway (Highway 31), at Glenfield. Continue south-west on the Hume and take one of the several exits to Campbelltown. The total length of this trip is about 35 kms, and should take 25 minutes or so.
8. Which suburb sells itself as 'seven miles from Sydney, and a thousand miles from care'?

Answer: Manly

Manly is a leisurely ferry trip across Sydney Harbour, and is a tourist magnet. The main street, The Corso, joins the sheltered beaches in Manly Cove to the ocean beaches of North Steyne, South Steyne and Manly beach, which is famous for its Norfolk Island pine trees, (and the surf, of course!).
9. At one stage there were about fifteen of these entertainment complexes in Sydney, however when Bass Hill closed in 2007, the last of them was located at Blacktown. What sort of place am I talking about?

Answer: Drive-in theatres

Drive-ins are a throwback to the easier days of the 1970s and really took a pounding when video players were introduced. Most of the defunct ones now have houses and units built on them - a pity, really.

As far as I am aware, there has never been a bull-fighting ring in Sydney! Yachting clubs would also be rather difficult, as both of these suburbs are some considerable distance from the ocean.
10. Sydney is surrounded by National Parks on three sides. To the south, there is the Royal National Park, to the west we find Blue Mountains National Park. What is the major park to the north of the city? It stretches from Asquith to Brooklyn, and east to Church Point.

Answer: Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park

A very pretty park that covers an area of 150 square kilometres. Within its borders can be found koalas, echidnas, wallabies, kangaroos, and hundreds of different species of native plants. Cycling, bushwalking, fishing, horse-riding, bird-watching, camping and swimming in the many waterways are all available, too. All this is less than 25kms from the centre of the city.

Kanangra-Boyd National Park borders the Blue Mountains on its south-western edge, and contains the awesome Jenolan Caves, Mt Annan is a very nice garden area near Campbelltown, and Mungo National Park is in the far west of the state, and is noted for its geological history. Some of the oldest artifacts of Prehistoric Man have been found there.
