1. The river Ouse flows through York. What is the name of the smaller river that also enters the City?

Answer: River Foss

The River Foss rises at Oulston Resevoir, passing through the Vale of York, it then enters the City and converges with the River Ouse.
2. The Knavesmire in York was a well known site for public hangings. In what year did the last hanging take place at The Knavesmire?

Answer: 1801

Probably the most famous person to be executed at Knavesmire was the highwayman Dick Turpin who was hanged in 1739. Today, Knavesmire is used mainly for recreation with a large part of it occupied by York Racecourse.
3. Born in York on 3rd November 1933, this man became one of the most celebrated film music composers of modern times. Who is he?

Answer: John Barry

The winner of five academy awards, Barry provided the music for a long line of films most notably, "Dr No" (1962), "Born Free" (1966), and the wonderful "Dances with Wolves" (1990).
4. Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gate is a small street close to the city centre. It was once the location of what device?

Answer: Pillory

The pillory was used for punishment by public humiliation, hence the street name. One example of a pillory is a device where the hands and feet where clamped shut by wooden boards.
5. Joseph Aloysius Hansom (1803-1882), the inventor of the Hansom Cab, was born in York. What was his profession?

Answer: Architect

The horse-drawn Hansom Cab became a common sight on 19th century streets. The cab has a suspended axle and larger wheels, thus providing a lower seating position. Apparently this led to fewer accidents.
6. In season 1954-55 York City AFC were defeated in the semi-final of the FA Cup. Who were the victors?

Answer: Newcastle United

York City were founded in 1922, admitted to the Football League in 1929, and relegated from the Football League in 2004. That was their first and only appearance in the FA Cup semi-finals, during that 75 year spell in the Football League. Newcastle United went on to win the final, defeating Manchester City 3-1. York City were playing in Division 3 (North) at the time of the semi-final.
7. In what year did York-born Guy Fawkes gain notoriety?

Answer: 1605

It was a failed attempt to kill King James 1 of England by blowing up the Houses of Parliament. Fawkes was the explosives expert recruited for the Gunpowder Plot of 1605.
8. This York-born actress was made a Dame in 1988. Who is she?

Answer: Judi Dench

A great actress on stage and film. Judi is also well known for her part in the T.V. series "A Fine Romance". She also gained world fame for her role as "M" in the James Bond film series.
9. In 1902, Joseph Rowntree the chocolatier bought 150 acres of land for the purpose of building houses for low income families. It is now a village to the north of York. What is the name of this village?

Answer: New Earswick

In 1883, on the death of his brother Henry, Rowntree took over the ownership of the chocolate factory. By the end of the 19th-century over 4000 people were employed there. Now owned by a Swiss company (by a takeover in 1988), it is still a large employer of York residents.
10. Construction on the York Minster (a Gothic cathedral) started in the year 1230. In which year was it completed?

Answer: 1472

York Minster is one of the largest of its kind in Northern Europe. The stone used for the building is magnesium limestone, a creamy-white coloured rock that was quarried at nearby Tadcaster. The cathedral's 128 stained glass windows are made up of approximately two million pieces of glass.
