He collapsed to the floor as they were at the Idol House during the party. At first people thought that he had just tripped. But when his cousin Elliot went to see if he was alright he had blood on him. The knife that stabbed him could not be found. It turned up later in Elliot Hayden's shoulder.

Elliot Haydon killed his cousin because he was in love with Diana Ashley and thought that he would be more eligible for her with Richard out of the way. He stabbed himself in the shoulder to deflect attention from himself.

He says that Elliot Haydon went to the South Pole and never came back. The rest of the group say that they think they know to real identity of the man Pender means. The most famous South Pole explorer was, of course, Robert Scott who died there in 1912. Makes you wonder what Agatha Christie knew!
