Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Downstate New York", there are (unofficially) seven counties: Bronx, New York, Richmond, Kings, Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk. Excluding those, how many counties compose the rest of New York?

Answer: 55

In all, there are 62 counties in the state of New York. Many people from Downstate New York think of the counties as consisting only of New York City, Nassau, and Suffolk counties. Everything else is considered Upstate.
2. Now we are in the Catskills. These mountains are easily viewed to the west while sailing north upon New York's longest river. What is it known as?

Answer: Hudson River

The Hudson River is named after Henry Hudson, who sailed it while looking for the Northwest Passage. It starts in the Adirondack Mountains and travels south over 300 miles to its end in New York Bay.
3. We come to the confluence of the Hudson and Mohawk rivers, in what is known as New York State's "Capital Region". Which of these cities is NOT considered part of this region?

Answer: Syracuse

Syracuse is located well west of the Capital Region, part of New York's Finger Lakes region. It is located just a few miles west of the geographic center of New York, making it easily accessible from everywhere in the state of New York.
4. We venture west, into the Leatherstocking Region. What famous New York river begins here and empties into the Chesapeake Bay?

Answer: Susquehanna River

Yes, Susquehanna River empties into the Chesapeake Bay, and on Interstate 88, there is a sign in Otsego County that says: "Entering Chesapeake Bay Watershed"! The Delaware River begins near the Leatherstocking Region, but it is more prominent in the Catskill region and empties into Delaware Bay between New Jersey and Delaware.
5. Now we are in the Finger Lakes Region. In and near this region are several lakes, but some aren't considered "true" Finger Lakes. Before European colonization of North America, five Iroquois Indian Nations inhabited this area. Which nation doesn't have a lake named after them, but a river instead?

Answer: Mohawk

Cayuga and Seneca lakes are the only two lakes here that are actually "Finger Lakes". I didn't state Onondaga Lake, which could be considered a Finger Lake by some. Oneida lake is nearby but not a Finger Lake. The Mohawk Nation doesn't have a lake named after them, but they've got the "Mighty Mo", the majestic Mohawk River!
6. Every winter, New York sees heavy lake effect snow from the two Great Lakes it borders. Lake Ontario is one, but what is the other?

Answer: Lake Erie

Cities like Jamestown and Dunkirk see heavy lake effect snow from Lake Erie, and cities like Oswego and Fulton see it from Lake Ontario. They receive snow often times before anywhere else in the state, and also usually have some of the highest snowfall records each year in New York.

7. Don't fall down--we're at Niagara Falls! There are two falls: one on the American side, and one on the Canadian side. The American-side falls are creatively named American Falls. What are the Canadian-side falls named?

Answer: Horseshoe Falls

The Canadian-side falls are named for their distinctive shape--they resemble a horseshoe! They are also known as the Canadian Falls by some.
8. While we are near two Great Lakes, you might wonder which of the five Great Lakes is the largest in size. Is it one of New York's or another Great Lake not bordered by New York?

Answer: Lake Superior

No, New York does not border the largest Great Lake, Superior. However, it is the only U.S. State that borders Lake Ontario! (It also borders Lake Erie).
9. We travel northeast to the Thousand Island Region. Which river meets Lake Ontario?

Answer: St. Lawrence River

While most of the islands are in Jefferson County, St. Lawrence County to the northeast boasts a beautiful shoreline among this amazing river. Also, it's New York State's largest county!
10. We end in the Adirondacks, a beautiful mountain range entirely within New York State. Here, you will find yourself inside a gigantic park that covers all of the 46 High Peaks and almost every mountain of the Adirondacks! What is its name?

Answer: Adirondack Park

Adirondack Park is indeed enormous. In fact, it is larger than Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Great Smokies, and Glacier National Parks combined, with room to spare!
