The Outlaw Josey Wales Trivia Quiz

"The Outlaw Josey Wales" was directed by Clint Eastwood and released in 1976. Over 30 years later, it still remains one of my favorites. I hope you enjoy this quiz.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What prompted Josey to join the side of the Confederacy during the US Civil War?

Answer: Union troops slaughtered his wife and son.

Josey was a peaceful farmer in Missouri. He was plowing his fields when the Union soldiers attacked his family and burned his house.
2. Josey became the arch-enemy of a Union squadron from Kansas. By what name were they known?

Answer: Redlegs

Though their uniforms were non-standard, all the Redlegs wore red leggings over their shins and ankles. It was a group of Redlegs that had attacked his farm and family, and he was out for revenge.
3. After the mass slaughter of the Confederate POWs by the Union troops, Josey's partner, Jamie, was dying from a bullet wound. What song did the boy sing before he died?

Answer: Rose of Alabama

Jamie was played by Sam Bottoms. Even though he was mortally wounded, he helped trick the two riflemen who were out to collect the $5000 bounty on Josey's head.
4. As with a few other Clint Eastwood films, there was a phrase that Eastwood's character repeated numerous times during "The Outlaw Josey Wales." What was it?

Answer: "I reckon so."

"I reckon so" never quite gained the same fame as Dirty Harry's "Go ahead, make my day."
5. How did Josey Wales show his disdain for those he didn't like?

Answer: He spat tobacco juice on them.

Josey had particularly good aim with his spit. For most of his victims, he hit them squarely on the forehead.
6. After Jamie died, who was the first straggler that Josie picked up in Oklahoma on the trail to Texas?

Answer: The old Cherokee Lone Watie

All three were encountered within a few miles of each other and followed along on Josey's escape from the Redlegs. Josey preferred to travel alone, but had a knack for accumulating wayward folks throughout the course of the film. Lone Watie was played by Chief Dan George of "Little Big Man" fame.
7. After Josey and his accompaniment reached the first town in Texas, what did he say to the four US soldiers he encountered outside the saloon?

Answer: "Are you gonna pull those pistols or whistle Dixie?"

This was one of several memorable lines of dialog from this film.
Josey killed three of the soldiers, and Lone Watie shot the fourth.
8. Why did the comancheros' leader stop his henchmen from gang-raping Laura Lee from Kansas?

Answer: She would sell for a higher price if she was fresh.

It was all about trade value to him. He offered them the girl's grandmother because she was worth "maybe one donkey."
Shortly afterward, Josey Wales killed the comancheros and rescued both women.
The character of Laura Lee was played by Sondra Locke, who was Clint Eastwood's girlfriend at the time the film was made.
9. Complete the dialog from inside the Lost Lady Saloon in Santa Rio: Josey: "Are you a bounty hunter?" Bounty hunter: "A man has to make a livin' somehow, these days." Josey: ________________________________________

Answer: "Dyin' ain't much of a livin', boy."

After this discussion, the bounty hunter left the saloon, only to return a few seconds later. In the draw down, Josey shot him dead, and the other bounty hunter ran away. The surviving bounty hunter later led the Redlegs back to Santa Rio to ambush Wales.
10. How did Josey Wales exact his final revenge against his enemies?

Answer: He killed Captain Terrill with his own sword.

Captain Terrill was in charge of the Redlegs troop that was tracking Wales, and had been the ringleader of the group that killed Josey's family. Terrill was the only one of the group who survived the attack on the cabin at Crooked River Ranch. Wales chased him down and killed him, even though Josey had run out of ammunition during the attack.
