Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the many Pacific islands inhabited by the Polynesian people became a second home to Joseph Banks, botanist of the Cook expedition. Here, Banks became a well respected figure in the local tribe and is popularly believed to be the first westerner to observe the activity of surfing. Which island, the largest of the Windward Islands, is being described here?

Answer: Tahiti

Formerly known as Otaheite, Tahiti proved to be a paradise for many on the Cook expedition (1768-1771), especially Joseph Banks, who gained high status and proved popular with the females of the tribe. So popular was Banks, in fact, that he was allowed no time to pay any attention to the Queen of the tribe.

This annoyed the Queen, who arranged for Banks' clothes to be stolen after luring him into her bed.
2. This island in the northern Pacific Ocean is the ancestral home of the Ainu people. It is separated from the mainland of the country it belongs to by the Strait of Tartary, and from its nearest foreign neighbour by the Strait of La Pérouse. Which island is this?

Answer: Sakhalin

Sakhalin is the largest of the Russian islands, and is separated from Hokkaido, Japan, by the La Pérouse strait. As well as the Ainu, indigenous tribes include the Orok and Nivkh peoples. The last Ainu people who lived there were moved to Japan in the aftermath of World War II.
3. This island is both the smallest, and easternmost, of the Greater Antilles. Which island is this, whose natives refer to themselves as Boricuas, a word derived from the original inhabitants of the island, the Taino?

Answer: Puerto Rico

The Taino people prospered on several islands in the Caribbean until the middle of the second millennium, when their population was decimated, largely by diseases imported by the Spanish. Other factors believed to have contributed to their decline include famine, warfare, and intermarriage. Taino culture is still recognized in Puerto Rico, where natives call themselves Boricuas after the Taino name for Puerto Rico, "Boriken".
4. The Goths were a European tribe who initially inhabited what is now known as Pomerania. The region of Pomerania is divided between Germany and which other country?

Answer: Poland

Lying across the northern parts of Germany and Poland, Pomerania was home to the Germanic Goth tribe, with evidence of their occupation of the area dating back several thousand years. The tribe moved across Europe as empires rose and fell, particularly the Roman Empire, until they eventually came to settle in the Anatolian region.
5. There are believed to be around 5.8 million members of this ethnic group living in China, but they are perhaps more associated with the country which shares the Gobi desert with China. Which ethnic group is this?

Answer: Mongols

Although only 3 million Mongols inhabit modern day Mongolia, they make up a far larger proportion of the total population than the 5.8 million found in China.

In Mongol tradition, dead bodies are taken out into the open, where a ceremony is carried out by a religious leader. A pack of starved dogs are then released and are allowed to devour the body.
6. The Chimu peoples built the largest pre-Columbian city in the New World. They lived there from around 800 CE to 1470 CE when they were conquered by the Incas. In which modern country did they reside?

Answer: Peru

The Chimu lived in the llama-free coastal desert of Peru until the Incas came down from the Andes to conquer them. The Chimu evolved from the remnants of the Moche culture, which existed in the same area from 100 CE until 800 CE. Chan Chan, the Chimu capital was destroyed by the Incas, but is gradually being rebuilt, and is now a World Heritage Site.
7. Mount Kebnekaise is the highest mountain in the Sápmi region. This area is home to the indigenous Sami peoples, and includes territory in four modern countries. Which of these is NOT one of those countries?

Answer: Denmark

Mount Kebnekaise is also the highest mountain in Sweden, and peaks just below 2100m. The fourth country to have territory in Sápmi is Russia.
8. One of the most notable ethnic tribes of Africa is the Maasai. While some Maasai live in northern Tanzania, where would you find the majority of these tribespeople?

Answer: Kenya

Over half the population of the Maasai dwell in Kenya, on Africa's eastern coast. Years ago, the Maasai inhabited a much larger area of Africa, but when other nations, particularly Britain, began their encroachment, their lands were decreased. Their unique culture and way of life attracts tourists from around the world, and many of these tribes welcome outsiders who wish to partake in their customs and rituals.
9. The Anasazi or Ancient Pueblo peoples flourished from approximately 1200 BCE to 1300 CE. In what part of the world did they live?

Answer: Four Corners area of southwestern U.S.

The Anasazi/Ancient Pueblo peoples occupied the Four Corners region of southern Utah and Colorado and northern Arizona and New Mexico. They are famous for their apparent disappearance; they abandoned their homeland towards the end of the thirteenth century. Archeologists now believe that they migrated south, possibly due to drought, and could be the ancestors of other tribes, such as the Acoma, Zuni and Hopi.

As with many Native American names, the word "Anasazi" was a derogatory term bestowed by a rival tribe; it is actually a Dine (Navajo) word meaning "enemy ancestors". So the use of the term is now considered controversial, and the title "Ancient Pueblo peoples" is preferred.
10. One of a very few remaining hunter-gatherer societies on earth, the Sentinelese people live on North Sentinel Island, and reject all attempts at contact from the outside world. Their island is a little over 70 square kilometres in area, and mainly forested. It is surrounded by coral reefs and shoals, and is part of an archipelago whose capital is Port Blair. Which archipelago is this?

Answer: Andaman and Nicobar

North Sentinel Island is in the Bay of Bengal, and lies to the south west of the Great Andaman Archipelago. The people who live there actively resist any contact attempts by outsiders and have even killed unwelcome visitors to keep their island sacrosanct.
