Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What nation, which borders 14 other countries, has the longest land borders of any country?

Answer: China

Only two countries have borders with 14 others - Russia and China. China has the longest land border at 22,117 km, compared with 20,241 km for Russia.
2. Which canyon system in the Western Hemisphere, with a name related to a metallic patina, is at least four times more voluminous than the Grand Canyon?

Answer: Copper Canyon

The Barranca del Cobre (or Copper Canyon in English) is a group of canyons in Chihuahua, Mexico. The name comes from the green colour of the canyon walls. Copper and other metals have been mined in the region.
3. The deepest lake in United States is Crater Lake. In what state is it located?

Answer: Oregon

The lake is approximately 5 miles by 6 miles across with an average depth of 1,148 feet. It was formed about 7,700 years ago by the collapse of the volcano Mount Mazama. Based on maximum and average depths among lakes in the world in which the basins are entirely above sea level, Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the Western Hemisphere and the third deepest in the world.

4. Founded in 1565 by Spanish explorer Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, what is the oldest European established and continuously occupied city in the continental United States?

Answer: St. Augustine, Florida

The city was named for the feast day of Augustine of Hippo (present day Algeria). He was a Latin philosopher and theologian, and is the patron saint of printers, brewers and theologians. Despite a small population, the city has a mix of Spanish and British influences in its architecture and is a significant location regarding civil rights for African-Americans. Legend has it that the "fountain of youth" can be found somewhere nearby.
5. The village of Mawsynram is considered one of the wettest places on Earth and is located near the Khasi Hills district of the state of Meghalaya. In which country will you find it?

Answer: India

In 1985 the village of Mawsynram received 1,000 inches (26 metres) of rain! That got them into the Guinness Book of Records. Based on recordings over several decades, the average annual rainfall is 467 inches (nearly 12 metres). If you visit there, bring an umbrella, a rain suit and a bailing bucket!
6. Ribbon Fall is the tallest continuous waterfall in the United States. Within which National Park is it located?

Answer: Yosemite

Falling over a cliff on the west side of the monolith called El Capitan and at a height of 1,612 feet, it is the largest single-drop waterfall in North America. The falls are most active in the spring when fed by melting winter snow.

Of the wrong answers, Death Valley is one of the lowest elevations in the world, Biscayne is a Florida marine park and the Great Smoky Mountains (as lovely as they are) are not tall enough to generate enormous waterfalls.
7. There are hundreds of mountain ranges in the world, but very few mountain chains. Which of the following is the longest mountain chain in the world?

Answer: Andes

Of all the choices, the Andes is the only chain in the group. It is at least twice as long (7,000 km) as the other four chains. The "runner-ups" are the Transantarctic Mountains, the Great Dividing Range (Australia), the Himalayas and lastly, the Rocky Mountain chain. All of the wrong answers are ranges, not chains.
8. If you were to gamble on which US state has the most hotel rooms per capita, which one would you choose?

Answer: Nevada

In a 2008 report by American Hotel and Lodging Association, there were 187,301 rooms in 584 hotels in Nevada, which equated to one hotel room for every 14 residents. Most of those rooms are located in Las Vegas and surrounding towns. The states listed in the other choices have a greater TOTAL of rooms, but have much larger populations.

The 2008 national average ratio was one hotel room for every 67 residents.
9. I know you're enjoying that cup of coffee, but could you put it down for a second and guess which of the following islands has significantly more people living on it than the other choices?

Answer: Java, Indonesia

As of 2010, Java had over 132 million inhabitants, Great Britain had about 63 million, Sumatra 47 million and Taiwan had 23 million. Java is "only" the thirteenth largest island in the world, but has a high population despite the fact that it is very volcanic. "Java" (along with "Joe") is a nickname for coffee.
10. With regularly measured depths in excess of 720 ft, what river, that flows mostly through rainforest areas, holds the record as the deepest one in the world?

Answer: Congo (Africa)

Also known as the Zaire River, the Congo River is the most powerful river in Africa. As of 2012, there were about forty hydropower plants in the Congo Basin - which accounts for approximately thirteen percent of global hydropower. Now THAT is pretty amazing - isn't it?
