Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Henry Fleming was a teen-ager who joined the Union forces to battle the Confederate army, in the American Civil War. He had a romantic dream of the war. He joined in spite of objections from whom?

Answer: His mother

His mother felt he was needed on the farm. She also looked with contempt on his dreams and eagerness to join in the fray. Athough she called him a fool, she made a lengthy speech of advice and farewell.
2. As Henry traveled on the train, his spirits remained high. Why?

Answer: The soldiers were fed and admired by people along the way

"On the way to Washington, the regiment was fed and caressed at station after station, until the youth believed that he must be a hero". Everyone, from girls to old men, smiled and encouraged the soldiers.
3. Months of boring camp life followed. Henry had lots of time to think, and hoped he wouldn't run from battle. After all his thinking, he figured out that he knew what about himself?

Answer: Nothing

During this time, Henry was lost about his identity as a soldier. He had conversations with more seasoned soldiers and the tall soldier reassured Henry that his regiment would fight and only a few might run, "...the boys come of good stock and most of 'em'll fight like sin after they oncet git shootin'." he said.
4. Once the regiment was on the march, they were having a good time, except Henry who felt alone. A fat soldier tried to steal a horse from a girl, and they fought over it. How did the regiment react?

Answer: They made fun of the soldier and wanted the girl to win

This was a break from the boring march. The soldiers were in a good mood and were "wildly enthusiastic in support of the young girl." Someone even advised her to hit the fat soldier with a stick. The soldier left without the horse and the girl looked after the men in triumph.
5. They grew close to the battle and two skirmishes occurred. Henry still struggled with his thoughts - was he a coward? Would he run? The battlefield grew noisy and smoky, with men running around. The battle raged. The first skirmish ended, the second began - men began to run, what did Henry do?

Answer: He ran away, too

During the battle, a man near Henry suddenly turned and ran howling. Henry, too, threw down his gun and ran, with horror on his face, "He ran like a rabbit". Many others ran, too.
6. Later, he found that the enemy had been stopped. Henry tried to tell himself that he had been right to run. But his guilt was great, and at first he found solace in nature, in a wood. But that was not to be for long. He wandered around and began to hear noises of the renewed battle. What did he do?

Answer: Ran in the direction of the battle

When he heard the battle was renewed he began to run toward it, realizing it was an ironic thing to do, He came upon troops who seemed to be retreating(or running). Henry traveled on toward the battle , the cannon shook him. The battle was like a "terrible machine" to him.
7. He came upon a line of bloody, injured men leaving the battlefield. Henry marched with them awhile beside a tattered man, who had wounds, while he, Henry, had none. How many wounds did the tattered man have?

Answer: Two

The tattered man had one wound on the head with a bloody rag around it, and another in the arm, which flopped uselessly. He talked to Henry about the battle and asked Henry where he was hit. Henry left the tattered man in embarrassment.
8. Henry now wished he had a wound, a red badge of courage. Men and the battle were all around, but still Henry felt isolated. In the chaos, Henry got his wound, how?

Answer: A fellow soldier hit him with his rifle

In the confusion of the retreat, Henry grabbed a soldier's arm. The soldier screamed several times to let him go. He then swung his rifle and hit Henry on the head - hard. Henry fell, bloodied. Later he trudged on in pain and dizzyness.
9. Henry found his regiment and told them he had been shot in the head. He was welcomed back and the second day of battle began. Henry was back fighting with his regiment. On this day his attitude had changed, and he was determined to fight bravely. Is this statement true or false?

Answer: True

As the second day began, Henry ran as fast as he could toward the battle. Through noise, bullets, rebel yells, cannons and other agonies, Henry ran toward his own manhood.
10. In a brief lull in the battle, someone cried, "Come on, yah fools! Come on...yeh must come on!" The regiment clumsily moved forward, firing and loading through the smoke. The color sergeant fell and what did Henry and a friend do?

Answer: Grabbed the flag pole

Henry and his friend grabbed the flagpole and held it aloft. While others were retreating, they struggled with each other to carry the flag. The regiment retreated along with Henry, now with more wounds, and the flag. His pride kept the flag upright. More enemy troops were coming behind them.

Henry walked on through the disaster with his flag. When things seemed hopeless, suddenly the attackers were gone. The regiment made it back to the lines, and though they were berated by the officers, they knew they had done well.

The battle went on, but Henry had gone from being a callow youth and a coward to being a brave soldier - a man.
