Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. During Gideon's life, the people of Israel were very wicked. God was so sad he handed them over to their enemies the Midianites. What did God say when the Israelites cried to him for a deliverer?

Answer: "I told you not to worship other gods, and you did not listen."

God sent a prophet to tell the Israelites, "I rescued you from Egypt, out of the land of slavery. I rescued you from the hand of the Egyptians. And I delivered you from the hand of all your enemies; I drove them out before you and gave you their land. I said to you, 'I am the Lord your God; do not worship the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you live.' But you have not listened to me." Judges (6:1-10)
2. Gideon was working really hard in his field when an angel appeared unto him. What did the angel say to Gideon?

Answer: "The Lord is with you, mighty warrior."

What the angel said to Gideon is very surprising because Gideon was not a brave man and had not done any brave deeds. He was a farmer. Gideon did not recognize the angel and thought it was a man. He asked the angel, "How can God be with us if He allowed all these bad things to happen." God told Gideon, "I am sending you to rescue them." Gideon told God he was the weakest man in his family and his family was not known for heroes. God told Gideon, "I will be with you and will kill all the enemies."(Judges 6:12)
3. When Gideon brought a sacrifice to the angel, what did the angel do with it?

Answer: He used a staff and set it on fire.

Then the angel of the Lord touched the meat and the unleavened bread with the tip of the staff that was in his hand. Fire flared from the rock, consuming the meat and the bread. And the angel of the Lord disappeared. When Gideon realized that it was the angel of the Lord, he exclaimed, "I have seen God! I will die!" Gideon was afraid he would die but the angel told him to have peace. Gideon built an altar there and named it "Peace" because God gave him peace there. (Judges 6:21-22)
4. Gideon decided to trust God. God had a plan for battle, but first he wanted Gideon to do some things. What was the first thing God told Gideon to do?

Answer: tear down his family's idols

God wanted Gideon to tear down the idols so everyone would know that Gideon served the true God. Gideon obeyed but he was scared. He tore down the idols at night so no one would know it was him. When the townspeople found out they were very angry. However Gideon's father told them, if the gods were powerful, they should have been able to defend themselves. (Judges 6:27-31)
5. Gideon wanted to be sure that God was with him. What did he ask God to use, when he asked God for a couple more signs?

Answer: a sheep's wool

Gideon said to God, "If you will save Israel by my hand as you have promised, I will place a wool fleece on the threshing floor. If there is water only on the fleece and all the ground is dry, then I will know that you will keep your promise." God did as Gideon asked. Gideon rose early the next day; he squeezed the fleece and wrung out the water - a bowlful of water.

Gideon was not convinced, though. Then Gideon said to God, "Do not be angry with me. Let me make just one more request. Allow me one more test with the fleece, but this time make the fleece dry and let the ground be covered with water." That night God did so. Only the fleece was dry; all the ground was covered with water. (Judges 6:36-40)
6. Gideon had gathered many soldiers but God told him, "You have too many men." God told Gideon to line his soldiers up by a river for a test. What unique way did God choose the men for Gideon's army?

Answer: He watched how they drank the water.

Gideon took the men down to the water. There the Lord told him, "Separate those who drink the water with their tongues like dogs and the those who kneel down to drink." God kept the ones that drank from their hands because they were able to watch and drink at the same time.

The ones who drank like dogs would not have been able to see the enemy if there was a fight. Gideon did as God asked and sent the ones who drank like dogs home. However when it was over he only had 300 men left to fight. Gideon became really worried. (Judges 7:5-6)
7. God knew Gideon was really nervous with his small army. He told Gideon to go and spy on the enemy camp. What did Gideon see and hear there that made him have courage?

Answer: The enemy soldiers were scared and talking about their nightmares.

Gideon obeyed God and went down to the enemy camp to spy. He arrived just as a man was telling a friend his dream. "I had a dream," he was saying. "A round loaf of barley bread came tumbling into the Midianite camp. It struck the tent with such force that the tent overturned and collapsed." Gideon was thrilled because he believed this was God's way of telling him the Israelites were going to be victorious! (Judges 7:9-13)
8. Gideon was excited when he returned to camp and started giving orders for battle. What unusual weapons did he give his soldiers to use?

Answer: a jar, a torch, and a trumpet

Gideon gave each of his men a torch with a jar on top. He also gave them a trumpet and told his men to wait for his signal. When he gave the word he told his men to smash the jars, which gave off the light of the fire. At the same time they blew their trumpets and shouted "The sword of the Lord and for Gideon!" (Judges 7:19-20)
9. The enemy soldiers were so scared when they heard Gideon's army make noise and shout, that they started killing each other.

Answer: True

Gideon and his army caught the enemies by surprise! The enemies were so scared when they heard the noise and saw three hundred fires, that they ran for their lives! They were so confused that they started killing each other. Gideon and his men chased them down to the river and captured the rest. God gave Gideon the victory just as He had promised. (Judges 7:19-25)
10. God gave Gideon the victory just as He had promised. The Israelites wanted Gideon to be their leader forever. What did Gideon tell them?

Answer: "The Lord will be your leader."

The Israelites said to Gideon, "Rule over us - you, your son and your grandson - because you have saved us from the hand of Midian." But Gideon told them, "I will not rule over you, and my son will not rule over you. The Lord will rule over you." (Judges 8:22-23)

Gideon realized the value of trusting God and letting Him be the leader.
