Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The book "Getting Rid of Bradley" begins with a statement by Tina Savage, the main character's sister. Which is the quote?

Answer: I've never known anyone who was stood up for her own divorce before.

Bradley could not show up for the hearing! The police wanted him for questioning, due to an anonymous phone tip. Poor Lucy was "stood up" for her own divorce hearing. But that makes for a funnier Chapter One!
2. After the divorce hearing, which of the following DID NOT happen to Lucy?

Answer: She was arrested.

The salad was tortured, the shot missed, and the police officer (Zack) said she did NOT beat him up. She thought he was a mugger and hit him with a bag full of Physics books. She was not arrested.
3. Which was NOT a dog owned by Lucy?

Answer: Newton

Lucy was a Physics teacher; the dogs were named after Albert Einstein, Werner Heisenberg, and James Clerk Maxwell. Heisenberg's name was misspelled a few times in my copy of the book, but we won't notice and since doggy Heisenberg was mop-like, he would not see the misspelling.
4. Both Lucy and her sister have a habit, when they want to say something but restrain themselves because they think the comment is not appropriate. What is the habit?

Answer: They blink.

Tina was informed of the habit. Upon the next restrained comment, she said she could feel the blink coming and could not stop it. The police considered the habit a nice detector of when the whole truth was not being offered.
5. Zack visited Lucy's house to question her about her husband. The neighbor's cat attacked him, then jumped through a car's open window and out the other side, and then... what happened?

Answer: The car blew up.

There was a bomb in the car, set off by the cat's feet. The neighbor and owner of the cat was shouting at Zack, and Officer Matthews (a.k.a "Junior") was told by Zack to shoot the cat for resisting arrest, but no one stole the car. It was toast.
6. Heisenberg knew a dog joke. He provided the punch line. What was the set-up line used throughout the book for the joke?

Answer: OH NO! Dead dog?

The dog stayed on his back with all feet straight in the air until the line was delivered. Lucy said with pride, "He thought it up all on his own."
7. Which Bradley was Lucy's husband?

Answer: Bradley Porter

Tina told Lucy that she would definitely have to go back to her maiden name now, since her married name, Lucy Savage Porter, "always sounded like you married a rabid bellboy." There WERE three Bradleys in the book, so the title "Getting Rid of Bradley" was an under-statement. An under-phrase?
8. Anthony knew that Zack was in love with Lucy, according to him, because Zack had never dated a woman who was what?

Answer: literate

Anthony said Zack had never dated anyone before who could read. At the time, Lucy was blonde, but that did not last 24 hours. She had nothing against cats, although Phoebe, the neighbor's cat, was "psycho." Lucy did talk to dogs, but according to her, "It's not like I talk to non-sentient things."
9. Events on the road toward Lucy's transformation from a nice person to a "mean person" were each followed by her making changes in hair color. Which was NOT a hair color that Lucy sported in this novel?

Answer: blue

The grey-green (green in some lights) came from a cheap black dye which washed out and left the bathroom wall smudged with shadows. Blonde was the divorce-hearing color, followed by black which morphed to green, and then an actual salon fixed the resulting mess with a red color.
10. By the end of the novel, a fourth dog moved in. When the villain (no spoiler on who that is!) threatened to shoot the dogs, Lucy varnished him (no, not "vanquished" - "varnished") and the new dog took initiative in another way. What did they name the fourth dog?

Answer: Pete

Zack got to name this dog, which he found on the street. He named him after a dog he had had as a child, and when the shooting started, Pete showed a distinct lack of manners and went for the villain's throat.
