Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How long is the estimated distance of the Wall in kilometers?

Answer: 21,000 km

It is slightly over 21,000 km as announced by China's State Administration of Cultural Relics in 2012. This is half the length of the Equator, spanning across fifteen regions from the north east to the north west of China.
2. Approximately what fraction of the Wall has disappeared and is in ruins?

Answer: one-third

Many wall sites have been lost due to harsh weather conditions and erosion. Some have been vandalized and destroyed by human activities especially during the Cultural Revolution turmoil in the 1960s. In 2006, the Chinese Government introduced a program to protect and preserve the Wall from future human vandalism.
3. The Wall constructed during the Ming Dynasty was the most well preserved due to great improvement in quality of brick production. The binding materials used to make the Wall more solid consist of lime mortar and which material?

Answer: Sticky glutinous rice

Lime mortar is a mixture of lime, sand and water. Lime mixed with water can turn into lime carbonate which makes it very solid. This combination with sticky glutinous rice flour made a strong binding material. Lime mortar was first used by the Egyptians 6000 years ago to construct the pyramids.

Answer: Badaling

Badaling Great Wall near Zhangjiakou is by far the best preserved and most complete section. It is about 70 km from Beijing and easy to reach by public transportation. As of 2017, more than 460 world leaders and VIPs have visited Badaling.
5. Due to the Wall's immense size and length, there are rumors that it can be can seen from outer space like a long black worm. Is this true?

6. What is the annual event held at Huangyaguan (Huangya Pass) in May?

Answer: Marathon

Huangya Pass is located at Tianjin about 100 km from Beijing. One quarter of this tough race course is on the Wall, 3700 steps climbing and the rest along the Wall. Four other Marathons are held on the Wall - at Badaling Remnant, Juyongguan, Jinshanling and Mutianyi at Beijing.
7. The Wall constructed during the Ming Dynasty (8850 km long) stretched from Liaoning in the north east region to which north west province in China?

Answer: Gansu
