3. Which beer is made using the cold, bottom-fermentation process?

From Quiz A Quiz on This and That

Answer: Lager

Lagers, including pilsners and bocks (the German dark beer), are bottom-fermented, generally using a cold-fermentation process. The various ales are warm fermented beers using a top-fermenting yeast, and this includes stout, porter, barley wine (which is actually a beer) and a few other styles. These beers generally have wide variations in style, are usually fruitier and sweeter than lagers.

4. Why are Papal bulls called as such?

From Quiz Patchwork Quilt 3

Answer: The Latin word for each metal seal was bulla

A Papal bull is a "decree, letters patent, or charter" (Wikipedia) issued from the sitting Pope of each period via the Roman Catholic headquarters of the Vatican. Decrees of this nature have been issued by Popes since the 6th century, but they weren't called as such until the 13th century (unofficially) and the 15th century (officially). There were two types of bulls and these were broken down into greater or lesser moment. By the 12th century, quite a few of these bulls had been forged. Because of the lack of instant telecommunications, this could take months or even years to be discovered, and great damage to the church could be done during the interim. In an attempt to stop this happening, the reigning Pope took to sealing each issued bull with his individual and very unique ring. Each one of these was created for a new Pope upon his ascension to the position, and destroyed upon his decease, so that no documents could be forged in his name immediately after his death. Each seal was formed by the Pope pressing that ring into a melted piece of lead at the end of a decree or bull. Sometimes, for very special decrees, a piece of melted gold was used instead, but each melted piece of metal, whether lead or gold, was known, in the Latin language, as a "bulla".

5. British Sir George Cayley (1773-1857) was one rather amazing inventor. In which field in particular - long before 1903 - should he perhaps be more acclaimed?

From Quiz Bit of This and That 10

Answer: Aeronautics

George Cayley, in fact, was a very prolific engineer, and considered by those in the know as the father of aviation. It just seems a shame that his name is not more widely known today. Not only did he thoroughly grasp the principles of flight, of weight, lift, drag and thrust, of cambered wings, and of the need for an engine to be designed to make the principles of powered flight a reality, George Cayley constructed the first flying model of a plane and the first glider that successfully could carry a passenger. All this back in the early 1800s! But wait, there's more. Other inventions and designs this remarkable man developed were lifeboats that could right themselves if overturned, "tension-spoke wheels...caterpillar tractors...automatic signals for railway crossings, seat belts, small scale helicopters..." an early model internal combustion engine, assorted engineering projects, plus many contributions in the fields of prosthetics, electricity, architecture, "ballistics, optics and land reclamation". This is truly astonishing. And yet today, apart from having a couple of British universities naming a dormitory, one lecture room and a bar after him, and a couple of other places in England doing likewise, this giant of a man seems to be fast gliding away into the forgotten realms of history. One more thing: Do you know the best thing about George Cayley of all? He stated that all his creations, discoveries and advancements should be made freely available to everyone. His memory should be far more honoured.

From Quiz Totally Random

Answer: Elmer Gantry

Burt Lancaster (1913-1994) was nominated for his performance in the 1960 movie "Elmer Gantry", portraying a lustful, fast-talking con artist and preacher. It was the beginning of violent emotions being portrayed on the cinema screens. The picture of the manly, traveling-salesman joke was the very center of this pious, hypocritical 'man of God', Elmer Gantry. Lancaster was nominated for Best Lead Actor Oscars for all of the above choices, for the 1943 film "From Here To Eternity" with Donna Reed, and Frank Sinatra; as Robert Stroud in "The Birdman of Alcatraz" in 1962, and "Atlantic City" in 1980 with Susan Sarandon, but Burt only won once for "Elmer Gantry".

The moon station would be built using cylindrical metal tanks, 10 feet in diameter and 20 feet long and was to be powered by nuclear energy. Twenty four astronauts would be trained to occupy the twelve man station.

14. Plus Four trousers were similar in style to knickers or knickerbockers. Why then were they called Plus Fours?

From Quiz Trivia Tidbits

Answer: They were four inches longer

Knickerbockers were knee length trousers that came down to the knee and were fastened there onto a band. These had been on the scene in many English speaking countries since the 1800s. Plus Fours, with the extra four inches of material added, still fastened at the knee, but they were baggier and a lot looser. This allowed for more freedom of movment, and they soon became popular as attire worn by many sportspeople in particular. They were introduced into the United States by Edward VIII of Great Britain when he visited that country in the 1920s. As that dashing little dandy was considered quite the fashion icon, this style was quickly emulated, and soon the older knickerbocker style was looked upon as quite a thing of the past, my dear. Plus Twos and Plus Sixes were also introduced but these never made it as big on the fashion scene.

From Quiz Ten Little Titbits

Answer: Giraffe

The tongue of a giraffe is around twenty-one inches in length, and is long enough and flexible enough for it to clean its own ears. Giraffes use it for grasping and plucking foliage to eat, especially the leaves of the acacia. These plants have some very long thorns, and the tongue of the giraffe is perfectly suited to get around the thorns to pick the young leaves. The top of the tongue is a purple/black colour. Most experts think that this is to protect it from sunburn when eating.

From Quiz A Mixed Up Quiz

Answer: Charlemagne

Of the four possible answers, only Charlemagne fits with France. During the 15th century in France, all four kings were given the following historic names: David, king of Israel, was the king of spades; Charlemagne, king of the Franks, was the king of hearts; Alexander the Great, king of the Greeks, was the king of clubs; and Julius Caesar, dictator of the Romans, was the king of diamonds. These names died out during the 19th century. The king of hearts is called the suicide king because it looks like his sword is going through his head. The king of hearts is also the only king who does not have a mustache.

18. In an attempt to prevent seasickness, the SS Bessemer was a ship designed with a stabiliser to prevent rolling in rough seas. What was the result of this?

From Quiz Comical Facts No 2

Answer: It collided several times with the wharf when docking

Sir Henry Bessemer (1813-1898) was famous for several inventions, the most successful of which was the Bessemer process used in manufacturing steel. After suffering from a violent attack of seasickness on a sea voyage in 1868. he set about designing a stabiliser for sea going vessels to stop the roll and pitch of same in unsettled waters. He worked on this between 1869 and 1875. When completed, and although never fully tested before taking to the oceans, the stabiliser appeared to be very successful indeed in its purpose. Unfortunately, however, little attention was paid to the difference this made to the ship's steering. As a result, when the ship tried to berth in Calais on its maiden voyage, it crashed, not once, but several times into the wharf, demolishing it quite thoroughly, and more than unsettling the stomachs of the alarmed passengers on board.

23. The champion British racehorse Thormanby lived from 1857-1875. After his death, what part of his body was mounted on a wall of Matthew Dawson's home at Newcastle?

From Quiz Bit of This and That No 5

Answer: His tail

They fashioned it into a whisk if you please. How undignified for such a great horse - to have part of his bottom immortalised in such a way. Thormanby was a successful racehorse, winning fourteen of his twenty-four starts. Matthew Dawson (1820-1898) was the very successful trainer who managed him. Following Thormanby's retirement, he became a more than successful sire of champions. Today, part of his pedigree is found in "almost all modern thoroughbreds". Not too bad for a horse known as "the champion of his order, the best horse in the world" - who ended up as a glorified duster. Another amusing fact about a racehorse was that, following the completion of the Derby Stakes (1819), the horse that won the race didn't stop, but jumped the fence and galloped right on into town. It must have been in a hurry to celebrate.

26. The last king of Afghanistan was ousted in a coup in 1973 by which family member?

From Quiz Mix Me Up No 2

Answer: His cousin

Born in 1914, Mohammed Zahir Shah was king or shah of Afghanistan from 1933 until his cousin's coup in 1973. For the first thirty years of his reign, he was not a particularly effective ruler and was prone to being overly influenced by his uncles. Following the end of WWII however, he hired foreign advisers to assist him. As a result of this input, a new constitution was formed, and a modern democratic state set up, with free elections, universal suffrage, liberation for women and civil rights for all. Wow! Unfortunately then, along came his cousin, and while the Shah was in hospital undergoing eye surgery, the coup took place. What a dirty tactic. The poor man couldn't see what was going on. On his return to that nation in 2002, after spending twenty-nine years in exile in Italy, Zahir refused the title of king and became known as The Father of the Nation instead. He passed away in 2007.

30. In 1666, after the Great Fire of London had been blazing for several hours, it was decided that someone should wake the Lord Mayor to tell him. He stomped to the window, glared out, and then said what?

From Quiz Bit of This and That

Answer: "A woman could piss that out!"

How wrong was that worthy public servant? The fire lasted four days and destroyed 52 halls, 87 churches and 13,000 houses. Sixteen people also lost their lives in the flames. The only upside to this disaster was that it burned out many venues where plague-carrying rats bred freely, thus putting a halt, at least temporarily, to the Black Death which periodically ravaged London. Historians have since raised the possibility that the fire was deliberately lit for this purpose - and to make way for the rebuilding of a greater, more beautiful capital city.
