3. Which author with a love for all creatures was born in 1916?

From Quiz Remembering

Answer: James Herriot

Remembering... that something happened in 1916 which made me happen. And therefore happy. It was October the 3rd, World War I was still raging, and in England Mrs. and Mr. Wight welcomed the birth of little James Alfred. Grown up, James worked as a vet in Yorkshire. Later in life he wrote "If Only They Could Talk", released in 1970, telling of his experiences as a budding vet. This was made into the TV series "All Creatures Great and Small" some years later, and not only my parents loved to watch it. Wight, who used the pen name James Herriot, died in 1995. Not only the Wights needed nappies that year. My grandparents, living in their farmhouse in a small northern German village, had another baby boy! My father. He worked as a baker, a sailor, a sailor in the German navy in WW 2, a bricklayer and a welder. I most likely left something out, but being born as the youngest, when he was nearly fifty years old, a great part of his life is hearsay for me. Edward Heath was a British prime minister once, Eugene McCarthy was a politician from Minnesota, not to be confused with Joseph, the guy who was very much afraid of communists. Kirk Douglas was an actor in his younger years. Heath and McCarthy died in 2005. Mr. Douglas turned 102 in December 2018.

4. Literature: Where is "Romeo and Juliet" set?

From Quiz Smorgasbording

Answer: Verona

It's interesting to me that British author William Shakespeare set so many of his plays in Italy. It was believed that the foreign setting could help make his works more exotic and exciting. Even more interesting is the fact that Shakespeare may never have set foot in the country. His tragic tale of star-crossed young lovers, i.e., "Romeo and Juliet", was set in Verona where, to this day, tourists still visit the Casa di Giulietta and stand on the balcony.

5. Creamy snuff is a tobacco paste which is used by women in India for which enhancement purpose?

From Quiz Anything Goes Six

Answer: Whitening teeth

Though Indian men would undoubtedly use this product as well, Indian women seem to be the greater percentage of its consumers and it is consequently marketed to appeal more to that fairer sex. Creamy snuff is sold in a tube similar to toothpaste and contains "tobacco, clove oil, glycerin, spearmint, menthol, and camphor" (Wikipedia). It sounds rather potent, but its popularity is testimony to its effectiveness. It has a downside though, which makes one wonder about the ruthlessness of the capitalist drive behind the products ingredients. Because of its tobacco content, creamy snuff is addictive.

9. What kind of sand is sand plus water?

From Quiz An Enjoyable Mixed Quiz, I Hope!

Answer: quicksand

Sand needs liquid to become quicksand, just like all of us caffeine lovers. Quicksand is a mixture of sand and liquid that combine to give it a unique property: it changes depending how much pressure is put on it. Just like the rest of us. You can make quicksand using cornflour and water, putting one cup of the cornflour in a bowl and adding one cup of water, stirring. Look online for exact instructions on how to make it. When you get the proportions right, it will change, depending how much pressure you put on it when you hold it, squeeze it, pat it or poke it. Sometimes it acts like a solid, sometimes like a liquid. It's cool stuff for a school science experiment. You can also practice first and be ready for the next time you're trapped in a pool of quicksand, and know how to sink, swim, or walk on it.

16. Sometimes called a "skunk bear" or a "devil cat", this animal is neither a bear nor a cat. With a Latin name of Gulo gulo, what carnivore and carrion-eater member of the Mustelidae family is it?

From Quiz Only Disconnect

Answer: Wolverine

The Mustelids are a group of animals that all resemble weasels in some way. The wolverine is one of the largest members of the family and quite probably the most ferocious of the bunch. "Gulo" is Latin for "glutton". This name was probably given to them on observance of their eating habits. It is doubtful that they are actually gluttons, but rather that they are opportunists who eat what they can as quickly as possible (if they find it) when food is scarce - particularly in winter. While the wolverine does have very sharp claws for digging and climbing, it is nothing like its "X-Men" persona. Wolverines do have very big feet in comparison to body-size, however, which serve as "snowshoes" for chasing things in the northern regions of the world that they live in.

From Quiz Bit of This and That No 2

Answer: Running sidewards

Lon Myers (1858-1899) was born in Richmond, Virginia. His career record is remarkable, and for a sportsperson, is worthwhile reading and gaping at. This included holding every record for races over various distances (50 yards and upwards), fifteen US, ten Canadian and three British national titles. The list of his wins is far too long to include here. On two separate occasions, he even won four different events on the same day! He was so good, in fact, that he wasn't allowed to compete in some events because the other runners refused to run against him. This unique runner was one incredible athlete. After he retired from the sport, the English media began to infer that Americans used faulty watches at their races, with the suggestion being that Myers wasn't nearly as good as his records stated. Myers, a year out of the game, promptly came back out of retirement and beat the English champion at three separate races at Madison Square Garden. The English champion, George, stated he only lost because of the "slow track, sharp turns, and smoke and confusion" at the Garden. So the following year, this time in Australia, the two champions squared off again. After Myers won the first two races, George didn't run the third, and caught the boat back to England.

It reached number three in the US and number two in the UK, in 2003. I imagine it's a perfectly innocent song about the benefits of delicious ice-cream and milk-based drinks, or something along those lines.
