Kal-El is the Kryptonian name of the superhero who was sent to live on Earth as a baby because his home planet, Krypton, was on the verge of being completely destroyed and (in most storylines in the "Superman" universe) his parents Jor-El and Lara die along with the planet. He became Clark Kent after being adopted by a human couple - Jonathan and Martha Kent - and grew up on their farm in Smallville, Kansas. After reaching adulthood Clark began to use his amazing super powers to help humanity with the help of a flashy costume and the alias "Superman". Superman was created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster and first appeared in a DC Comics publication in 1938. Since then the character has appeared in numerous radio, TV, film and video games, fighting crime and generally seeking to promote "Truth, Justice and the American Way". In the 3rd century BC, the Taurini were a Celto-Ligurian people who lived in the foothills of the Alps in the upper valley of the Po River, The main settlement became known as Torino (anglicised to Turin), which became the first capital of a unified Italy before the capital moved to Florence and then Rome. The coat of arms features a single prancing bull on a blue background underneath a black crown. Ferruccio Lamborghini founded Automobili Ferruccio Lamborghini S.p.A. in Bologna in 1963 to compete with Ferrari in the sports car sector. Signor Lamborghini was fascinated with bullfighting, and visited the Seville ranch of Don Eduardo Miura, who bred Spanish fighting bulls. Lamborghini chose to adopt a raging bull as the emblem for the his automobile company. However, unlike the prancing bull on the Torino coat of arms, he chose a design with the bull on all fours about to charge. It is unclear if he thought a prancing bull would be too close to the prancing horse of the Ferrari emblem. The world's first postage stamp was issued in 1840 by the United Kingdom. It is called the Penny Black, because of its colour and value. Because of its position as the first country to issue stamps, the UK did not put the country of origin on the stamp. This tradition has carried through to this day. The stamp shows a side-face engraving of the reigning monarch, Queen Victoria. George Washington was on the 1847 US 10c, and Benjamin Franklin was on the 5c stamp, but both had died many decades before that date. Napoleon III appeared on French stamps between 1852 and 1870. Rowland Hill was the UK Postmaster who conceived the idea of prepaid postage. He has featured on the stamps of many countries, but most of these were to commemorate the centenary of the Penny Black, in 1940. The nine-banded armadillo can be found in South, Central and North America. Although the animal typically has nine bands on its carapace, this number can vary by geographic region. Its diet consists mainly of insects supplemented with the occasional amphibian or reptile. When alarmed, the armadillo is able to move with surprising speed and leap up to 1.2 m (4 ft) in the air. The nine-banded armadillo migrated from Mexico to the United States in the 1800s and has been expanding its range northwards and eastwards ever since. This expansion is, in part, due to a lack of natural predators in the United States and a high reproduction rate. During mating season, a single egg is fertilised but the resulting zygote divides into four identical embryos, giving rise to quadruplets. The nine-banded armadillo is sometimes hunted for its meat, which is said to taste like pork. During the Great Depression it was dubbed the poor man's pork or Hoover Hog. The Caves of Nerja ("Cueva de Nerja") are located near the town of Nerja in the province of Málaga in southern Spain. About 5km (3.1 miles) in length, the caves are a major tourist attraction. One of the caves is a natural amphitheatre and the site of regular concerts. The Caves of Nerja were rediscovered in early 1959, with an additional entrance created a year later for tourists. In 2012, suspected Neanderthal paintings were found in another part of the cave complex. Possibly the only Neanderthal art discovered so far, the pictures of seals have been dated using radiochemical techniques to more than 40,000 years of age. Nigel's skills at the game of Scrabble border on being freakish. Raised in New Zealand and blessed with an eidetic memory he has won numerous titles across the globe. He won the World Championship in 2007. OK, so far so good. He did it again in 2011, which made him the first person to win the title twice. Yeah, that makes him a little bit special. What if I were to tell you that he won again in 2013, in 2018 and also in 2019. That makes him pretty special. At the time of writing, he is still the only person to have won the title more than once. In 2015 he entered the French World Scrabble Championship. Here's the thing, all the words had to be French words and, before entering the tournament, he never spoke a word of it. Legend has it that he spent nine weeks studying the French dictionary and went on to win the title. To make the legend greater, he even chipped the then French champion for using a word that didn't exist. Viva le Nigel. This question was spelled out by Phoenix Rising's pollucci19 who doesn't get the 50 bonus points because he couldn't find a way to get the letter J into the question.

Leonardo Fibonacci was a mathematician of great renown. As well as the famous Fibonacci number, which a string of numbers created by adding the previous two numbers together (1,1,2,3,5,8), he was also instrumental in introducing Hindu-Arabic numbers into Europe, replacing Roman numerals, making calculations easier, bringing about a boost to the European banking system. Pisa, a town in Italy most famous for its Leaning Tower, was originally its own republic, a mighty economic centre which sent out merchants and traders in the 11th to 15th century. Phoenix Rising member smpdit has always marveled at the beauty of spirals mathematically-mapped using the Fibonacci number.

As a method of protecting their offspring from predators, mobbing is an effective collaboration of birds and some mammals. When attacked, the adults in the group react together to drive off the aggressor. It is more common as a behaviour with birds such as crows, gulls and chickadees, and takes the form of flying around the subject, dive bombing and defecation. It is often accompanied by loud calls and squawking which helps to call for aid from other members of the group. Some mammals such as meerkats and buffalo also 'mob' in order to protect their young, obviously without the flying and squawking! The term 'mobbing' is interestingly also used to describe human behaviour such as reporters surrounding a juicy story subject. smpdit often sees mobbing displayed in her garden when the resident crows take on the local hungry buzzard.

The Cannes Film Festival (Festival de Cannes) was founded in 1946 as the International Film Festival, officially adopting the newer name in 2002. It is held annually (usually in May) in the French Riviera city of Cannes at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès convention centre. The event is by invitation only and is regarded as one of the "Big Five" film festivals, alongside Venice, Berlin, Toronto and the Sundance. The Palme d'Or (Golden Palm) is the highest prize awarded, while the Grand Prix (Grand Prize of the Festival) is the second-most prestigious. The Cannes Film Festival is seen as important for showcasing European films. Some 56 films were officially selected for the 2020 Cannes Film Festival which was initially postponed and then cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. No awards were made in 2020. Previously, just three films had won both the Palme d'Or and the Academy Award for Best Picture: "The Lost Weekend" (1945), "Marty" (1955) and "Parasite" (2019). Lights, camera, action! The spots on jaguars are called rosettes, which are irregular black circles resembling roses, with tawny centres on top of a lighter coat. Leopards have smaller, less complex rosettes that are grouped closer together. These rosettes offer camouflage for the predators as they move through trees or other vegetation. Cheetahs by contrast have spots which are individual solid round or oval black spots all over its body. Both leopards and jaguars can be black, a mutation often referred to as a 'black panther' which arises from a gene that produces a surplus of melanin. This question crept into the quiz silently as it was authored by Phoenix Rising team member 1nn1.

"Wolf Hall", published in 2009 is a historical novel that was written by Hilary (one 'L') Mantel. It is a fictionalised account of Thomas Cromwell's rise to favour in the court of King Henry VIII. The book was the first in the series for Mantel and it earned her the Man Booker Prize. Hillary (two 'L's) Clinton won the US Democratic Party's nomination for President in 2016. In doing so she became the first woman to be nominated by a major party to be the President of the United States. She would win the popular vote but fail to win the Electoral College. Hilary (one 'L') Swank is an American actress who won her first Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in the 1999 film "Boys Don't Cry". Her continued star performances saw her land the prize role of female boxer "Maggie" Fitzgerald in Clint Eastwood's 2005 film "Million Dollar Baby", a role in which she earned her second acting Oscar. A kangaroo word carries within itself all the letters of its synonym (called a joey word) such that the letters of both words follow the same order (much like a mother kangaroo will carry her joey in her pouch). Kangaroo/joey pairs include words like 'arch'/'arc' in which joeys are derived from a consecutive arrangement of letters and words like 'separate'/'part' in which the letters are separated. Twin kangaroo words contain two joey words (for example, 'deteriorate' contains 'die' and 'rot'). Grand kangaroo words contain two joey words, except that one is also contained within the other (as in 'alone'/'lone'/'one'). Canis simensis has been known by many names including the Abyssinian wolf, Simien fox, Simien jackal, Ethiopian jackal, red fox, red jackal, Abyssinian dog, and cuberow. It is now most commonly referred to as the Ethiopian wolf. Its mitochondrial DNA shows a closer link to modern grey wolves than to any African canids like the jackal. Abyssinia and Ethiopia were interchangeable names for much of modern history with Abyssinia being derived from the Arabic al-Habash. The Elvis song 'Wolf Call' is from the soundtrack to the 1965 movie 'Girl Happy'. It was never released as a single. The Jubilee Four and the Carole Lombard Trio sing the backing vocals for the song. Answer: How they feed

Diving ducks feed by submerging completely in the water. Their tails and wings are smaller than those of dabbling ducks. Their wing feathers are less brightly coloured compared to the dabbling ducks and their smaller wings mean that they have more difficulty taking flight and they have faster wing-beats. In addition, their feet are also bigger and set further back on their bodies, helping them to dive and swim but making it more difficult to walk on land. As such, their feeding is mostly done on the water. Dabbling ducks rarely dive but feed mainly on the surface of the water. When feeding, the head is beneath the water surface while the rear end sticks straight up in the air, giving rise to the term "duck butt". They are equally comfortable on water and on land and can be observed feeding at both sites. Melittin is the active component in honeybee venom (apitoxin) and constitutes 40-60% of the venom by dry weight. It is a small peptide, only 26 amino acids long with a molecular mass of around 3 kDa. Melittin can directly activate pain receptors. In addition, it induces pore formation in lipid membranes that allow the leakage of tissue-derived metabolites that also excite the pain receptors. Apart from its neurosensory activity, melittin has many biological properties and has been explored for use in modern medicine as anti-cancer, anti-viral, anti-bacterial or anti-inflammatory drugs. Androctonus australis hector insect toxin (AaHIT) is a toxin derived from scorpions. Oxyopinin is a class of peptide toxins from the lynx spider in the genus Oxyopes. Ssm spooky toxin is a component of Chinese red-headed centipede venom. "The Sting" (1973) won Best Picture, among a total of seven awards, at the 46th Academy Awards. Also called the "Eurasian blackbird", "Turdus merula" is a thrush species with "Turdus" being the Latin word for "thrush". Found in Europe, North Africa and Asiatic Russia the bird has also been introduced to parts of Oceania, including Australia and New Zealand. The birds are omnivorous, feeding on a range of berries, fruits, insects and earthworms. Blackbirds feature in many songs and poems. "The Twelve Days of Christmas" includes "Four calling birds" although this probably originated as "four colly birds", a popular nickname for the "black as coal" common blackbird. In a well-known nursery rhyme, the practice of cooking live birds under a pie crust may have led to: "Sing a song of sixpence, A pocket full of rye; Four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie! When the pie was opened the birds began to sing, Oh, wasn't that a dainty dish to set before the king?" Agatha Christie, doyen of detective fiction authors, was not averse to borrowing from nursery rhymes for the titles of her novels and short stories. In "The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding" (1960), the "Four and Twenty Blackbirds" story sees Hercule Poirot investigating the murder of a restaurant diner. With a name meaning "little cow", the vaquita (Phocoena sinus) is the world's smallest cetacean (some species of: dolphins, porpoises, whales) growing only to 1.4-1.5m long. Residing exclusively in the shallower waters at the northern end of the Gulf of California, it is critically endangered. Their imminent demise is largely due to being by-catch in fishing nets. This question is sadly inserted into this quiz by MikeMaster99 whose day job is trying to introduce more aquatic science into the management of precious marine and freshwater environments, where stories such as that of the vaquita are far too common.

Is there any good use for a cane toad? Some people say it's good for improving their golf swing, but that's a bit extreme (it'd make a mess of the clubs!!) The ugly varmint was introduced into Australia in 1935 to control the dermolepida albohirtum beetle (commonly called the cane beetle), a native Australian insect that is a parasite of sugarcane. Cane toads are native to South and Central America and while effective in controlling the cane beetle before the introduction of chemical agents, the cane toad also eats beneficial insects and other small prey. Their eggs are laid in still or slow-moving waters, from 8000-30 000 eggs at a time. Most Australian native frogs typically lay just 1000-2000 eggs per year. Not content to occupy the sugar cane growing regions of Australia, the cane toads have now spread to inhabit nearly four-fifths of the Queensland landmass, and are present in the Northern Territory's Kakadu National Park, leading to a reduction in small native fauna and insects. They are steadily moving west into Western Australia. There are a lot of slang terms used in the game of darts and this one, 'bed and breakfast', is arguably the most famous. It is arrived by hitting a single dart in the 20, the 5 and the 1 beds. Most players will seek to hit the twenty or, specifically, the triple twenty, as it has the potential to provide a higher score-line than any other number on the board. Both the five and the one flank the twenty so it is not uncommon for players to miss their target and nail these two lesser numbers. The origin of the phrase is debatable though the most common explanation for it appears to be that, at the turn of the twentieth century, the cost of a bed and breakfast was two shillings and six pence (or 2 and 6). Incidentally, if a player nails his three individual darts into the triple five, triple twenty and triple one (for a score of 78), this is known as a 'champagne breakfast'. It has nothing to do with the cost of a champagne breakfast. As for the link with boxing... it's a tenuous one, December 26 is Boxing Day. This question was pegged out by Phoenix Rising's pollucci19, who's more likely to end up with a 'bag of nails' (three darts in the single ones) than a 'bed and breakfast'.

Answer: Charles II

After the dour and austere years of the Cromwells and puritanism, Charles II (son of the beheaded Charles I) returned monarchism to England. Although he returned to London in May 1660 to great public acclaim, his coronation was not held for nearly a year (23rd April 1661) partly due to the need to make new regalia including a crown. The previous items of royalty were destroyed at the end of the Civil War. His early rule was marked by flamboyance and frivolity, as indicated by his elaborate and spectacular coronation procession. Not long afterwards, London was hit with both the return of the Bubonic Plague and the Great Fire (1666) followed by war with the Dutch. Charles II died in 1685 and is remembered for his statesmanship, his great support of science (including the establishment of the Royal Observatory) and his extra-marital dalliances. And the link with Christmas is the wreath. The Christmas wreath, which is seen as having no end and no beginning, is also seen to symbolize the never ending love of God. This question was directed to the very front of this Zoom parade by MikeMaster99, who is constantly amazed, but never surprised, by the manner in which historical royalty had such a profound effect on the mood of the times.

'The Canterbury Tales' is a collection of 24 tales based on stories told by a group of pilgrims during their journey from London to Canterbury. The Squire of 'The Squire's Tale' is the enthusiastic young son of the Knight (of 'The Knight's Tale fame) and his story is a suitably epic romance about the adventures of Genghis Khan and three of his children. In fact, it proved to be too epic as it remained unfinished - although that might have been a deliberate act on the part of Chaucer as the final part of the text includes a presumably fed up or impatient Franklin interrupting the Squire and beginning his own tale instead. Julius Caesar and Alexander the Great are both featured in 'The Monk's Tale', which is about the tragic fate of 17 figures from history or mythology. The Tale of Cool Zooms XXXII thus begins with this questionable piece by Fifiona81, who is pretty sure that you'd need the will of a famous conqueror to finish reading Geoffrey Chaucer's epic work (especially if your copy of it is written in Middle English).

Lasting almost 19 months in 1904 and 1905, the Russo-Japanese war was fought between the Russian Empire under Nicholas II and the Empire of Japan led by Meiji. Major theatres of operation were Manchuria and the Korean Peninsula. With the Port of Vladivostok only available during summertime, Russia was seeking a year-round Pacific port. Japan was prepared to allow Russian dominance in Manchuria if they could control the Korean Peninsula. Instead, the Russians demanded part of the Peninsula as a buffer between Japan and themselves. When negotiations broke down in 1904, Japan surprised Russia by opening hostilities. The result of the war was a Japanese victory. Total casualties were estimated between one and two hundred thousand persons. The Treaty of Portsmouth negotiated by President Theodore Roosevelt saw the end of the war. Russian humiliation and losses were contributing factors to that country's 1905 Revolution. In researching this question for the quiz, Phoenix Rising's psnz could not help but reflect on philosopher and Nobel laureate Bertrand Russell's thought that "War does not determine who is right, only who is left."

Answer: Game of Thrones

The Lannister family from "Game of Thrones" is often at odds, with siblings Cersei, Jamie and Tyrion trading insults and allegiances. In 2019, a crossover short featuring Elmo from "Sesame Street" and Cersei and Tyrion from "Game of Thrones" was released by HBO, an American pay TV network that screens both shows. In this video, titled "Respect is Coming", Cersei (Lena Headey) and Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) are arguing when Elmo gate crashes their family spat and tells them they "need to respect each other". With Elmo as a peacemaker, in this crossover at least, they agree to try. The producers of "Sesame Street" were not content to leave it there though. In another short video also teaching about respect, The Cookie Monster acts as a mediator in a "Westworld" crossover. Answer: The Ed Sullivan Show

"The Ed Sullivan Show" was a CBS variety show which ran from 1948 to 1971, hosted by the eponymous Ed Sullivan, an entertainment columnist. Some of his "famous" guest stars included Itzhak Perlman, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, The Supremes, The Muppets and of course the performers mentioned in the question. In 1955 guitarist Bo Diddley appeared on Sullivan's show but missed his cue and instead of singing "Sixteen Tons" (the Tennessee Ernie Ford hit), sang his own hit song, "Bo Diddley". Sullivan's response was "You are the first black boy that ever double-crossed me." Diddley never appeared again on "The Ed Sullivan Show." Ed Sullivan was conscious of both "Beatlemania" and the "British Invasion" in the 1960s. In 1963 he tried to organise a show featuring The Beatles with manager Brian Epstein. However, Epstein was able to parlay this into three consecutive shows in 1964. Their first appearance set a US television audience record and the first song sung was "All My Loving". The Beatles' final live appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show" was in 1965. The Rolling Stones first appeared in 1967, having been told to change the title of their hit single "Let's Spend the Night Together". The band reacted disapprovingly every time they sang the more innocuous "Let's Spend Some Time Together". Mick Jagger was castigated by Sullivan for not wearing a jacket during their performance. Altogether, the Stones appeared six times on "The Ed Sullivan Show". The Doors also performed in 1967. Network censors insisted that the lyrics of "Light My Fire" be changed from "Girl, we couldn't get much higher" by changing "higher" to "better". Another source suggests that the modification was to "Girl, there's nothing I require". Lead singer Jim Morrison sang the original lyric during a tape for the show. Mediocre and time-consuming editing facilities meant that the network was powerless to change anything and the Doors never performed on the show again. Initially developed and published by American video game manufacturer InnerSloth, "Among Us" is an online multiplayer social deduction game. Using a space-themed setting, players each take on a Crewmates role, and a predetermined smaller number become Impostors. Crewmates identify the Impostors and get rid of them to enable completion of tasks around the map. The Impostors sabotage and kill the Crewmates first. The sales were initially slow and blamed on poor marketing. However, in early 2020 there was a spike in popularity, at first driven by players in Mexico, South Korea, and Brazil where the game is more popular than in the United States. By the middle of 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic was frequently quoted as a reason for the increased popularity of "Among Us", as it facilitated socialisation despite social distancing. Answer: Eagle

The bateleur (Terathopius ecaudatus) is a medium-sized eagle with striking head coloration and, unusually, almost no tail (hence the ecaudatus in the scientific name, meaning without a tail). Living mainly in grasslands and open savanna, this predator's diet varies enormously from insects to smaller birds and eggs and smaller mammals. They will also eat carrion. Bateleurs form monogamous relationships and both parents take care of the usually single egg that is laid, which hatches two months later. It is believed, although not verified, that the bateleur is the basis of the eagle emblem for Zimbabwe. Eagle is also a marque (brand) of vehicles manufactured by Chrysler in the USA, after the 1987 purchase of the American Motors Corporation. The Eastern Racers are a species of snakes found in North and Central America. The Northern Black Racer (Coluber constrictor constrictor) is one of the eleven sub-species and this non-venomous snake has been Ohio's State Reptile since 1995. Twenty-eight US states have an official State Reptile. Black Racers can range in length from 50-152cm (20 to 60 inches). They are diurnal and highly active, with a diet of rodents, frogs, toads, lizards and other snakes. Their "racer" name is appropriate for these speedy snakes. The snake is prevalent in Ohio, something which prompted the State Legislature to name it their reptile. Along with Blue Racers, the snakes help control animals which might damage farmers' crops. Answer: Dick Tracy

Chester Gould created "Dick Tracy" and based him on the deeds of the famed Prohibition agent Eliot Ness. He forwarded his idea to Joseph Medill Patterson of the Chicago Tribune New York News Syndicate with the name of "Plainclothes Tracy". It was Patterson idea to give him the Christian name "Dick", an informal term for detective, and, in October of 1931, Tracy made his publishing debut. Tracy would use gadgets, such as his two-way wrist radio, forensic science and his own intelligence to solve crimes. Tracy's lover, and eventual wife, was Tess Trueheart but Tracy certain made their relationship a challenging one. Many times Tess would come into the line of fire and have her life placed in danger by some evil villain looking to get at Tracy. This question was inspired by one of Alfred Hitchcock's short comedies, 1923's "Always Tell Your Wife" and was brought to you by Phoenix Rising's pollucci19 who is often terrified to tell his wife.

Answer: Buzz Lightyear

Before production started, the name 'Tempus of Morph' was considered, too. Lunar Larry was (thankfully) discarded in favour of Buzz Lightyear. The producers named him after Apollo 11 moonwalker, Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin. Buzz, along with all the other characters, first appeared in the 1995 animated movie, 'Toy Story'. The 'Toy Story' movies feature a who's who of top stars lending their voices- Tim Allen, Kelsey Grammer, Tom Hanks, Don Rickles, Bonnie Hunt, Timothy Dalton, among many others. 'Toy Story 3' and 'Toy Story 4' both won Oscars for Best Animated Picture Chewbacca is a 'Star Wars' character, Mr Arrow was from 'Treasure Planet' and Wall-E is a futuristic garbage-muncher.
