Music: Something in Common Trivia Questions

1. This question might be difficult, but the good noose is that they probably get easier: "Dogfish Rising" is a hidden track on what heavy metal band's 1996 album "Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat."?

From Quiz
Windmill's Favorite Music? It's a Big Metal Fan!

Answer: Slipknot

It is the ninth track on the album which perhaps appropriately was released on Halloween, 1996: "I saw a human hand Windmills like two Somethin' at my left (Screaming sphincter muscles) Post-sniff scrunchies What the?" The band has a very creative stage appearance as they all wear threatening-looking masks, and the music is very aggressive sounding. The violence of their stage act has been known to result in a few broken ribs over the years among the band members. Rock on.

2. Which British classic rock band recorded a song called "Black Country Woman" that begins with an airplane?

From Quiz Mistakes in Popular Songs

Answer: Led Zeppelin

"Black Country Woman," from Led Zeppelin's album "Physical Graffiti" begins with the sound of an airplane passing by. It also begins with a short discussion among the band members about whether or not they should start over again and remove the airplane sound, concluding with one of the band members saying "Nah, leave it." The mistake didn't stop the album from being certified 16 times platinum in the U.S.

3. In this song by Pink Floyd, on their album "Wish You Were Here", somebody asks "Which one's pink?" Which song is it?

From Quiz Songs That Criticize the Music Industry

Answer: Have a Cigar

Part of the concept of Pink Floyd's highly successful album "Wish You Were Here" is criticizing the music industry. One of the songs that does this is "Have a Cigar." This song is sung from the point of view of a record executive approaching Pink Floyd for a record deal for the first time ever. The record executive promises the band that they are going to be very successful, and flatters the band with praise, but then they ask "Which one's pink?" revealing that they actually know nothing about the band. According to guitarist David Gilmour in a 1992 interview on "In the Studio With Redbeard," multiple people in the music industry really did ask that question to the band, thinking that Pink Floyd was the name of the singer. The point of the song seems to be that people who run the music industry are liars and should not be trusted.

4. Ann Wilson of Heart hated this 1990 hit that she made. What was it?

From Quiz More Hit Songs Hated by their Makers

Answer: All I Wanna Do Is Make Love To You

Female-led rock band Heart had hit songs in at least three different decades. They had some rock hits in the 1970's, some slow popular power ballads in the 1980's, and in the 1990's they had "All I Wanna Do is Make Love to You." According to Ann Wilson in the liner notes of Heart's 1995 Unplugged live album "The Road Home," the song was written by producer Mutt Lange. Wilson says that he wrote it for Don Henley of the Eagles, "but there was a lot of pressure on us to do the song at the time." The song went to number two on the U.S. Billboard top 100 and number one in Australia and top 10 in a few other countries. However, Ann Wilson told Dan Rather that she thought the song was "hideous." The whole interview can be found on YouTube.

5. In a 2015 interview with Howard Stern, Madonna said that she hated what song associated with her?

From Quiz Hit Songs Hated by their Makers

Answer: Material Girl

"Material Girl" is a song about a gold-digging woman who only dates rich man. Sadly, this song became a top 10 hit in at least 10 different countries. However, it turns out Madonna wasn't completely inhumane. In a 2015 interview, Stern asked Madonna if it was true that she hated "Like a Virgin" because other people wrote it. She said that she likes "Like a Virgin" and appreciates its writers, and the song that she hated is "Material Girl." Not only did she hate the song, she hated that strangers called her "Material Girl" whenever they say her. She claims that she is not a material girl.

6. Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama" was a response to songs by whom?

From Quiz Response Songs

Answer: Neil Young

Neil Young wrote two songs, "Southern Man" and "Alabama" that bashed the racism and slavery that Alabama used to have. Lynyrd Skynyrd made "Sweet Home Alabama" as a response to those songs. The result was a top ten U.S. and Canada hit for Lynyrd Skynyrd. One major point in the song is "In Birmingham, they love the governor (boo boo boo)!" This line is often misunderstood because many people miss the "Boo! boo! boo!" which implies that the previous line was sarcasm (and that they didn't love the governor). Another major point in the Lynyrd Skynyrd song is "Now Watergate does not bother me. Does your conscience bother you? Tell the truth." Songwriter Ronnie Van Zant said that his point was southern people don't bash northern people for Watergate, so why do northerners bash southerners for racism and slavery? Neil Young, in his autobiography, said that he really liked "Sweet Home Alabama," and that his own songs deserved that response. Young says that he doesn't like his own songs when he listens to them because they are "accusatory and condescending."

7. In 2004, a man called Gary Brolsma filmed himself dancing enthusiastically to a Europop song by a band called O-Zone. It's informally known as the 'numa numa' song, but what is the actual name of the song?

From Quiz Stop Being So Meme!

Answer: Dragostea Din Tei

It's not often you hear a pop song sung in Romanian outside the Eurovision Song Contest, but 'Dragostea Din Tei' is a very notable exception (the band were from Moldova). The catchy chorus of the song goes 'vrei sa pleci dar nu ma, nu ma iei' ('you want to leave, but you don't want, don't want to take me'). 'Dragostea Din Tei' means 'the love of the linden tree', and is notable for being one of the very few UK chart hits sung in the Romanian language. Brolsma's video originally appeared on Newgrounds.com, posted under the name 'Gman250'. The video itself spawned parodies, and has been viewed over 18 million times.

8. This singer released a 1982 hit song called "Kids in America," even though she was neither a kid at the time nor was she from America. What was her name?

From Quiz The Lyrics Aren't True For the Artist

Answer: Kim Wilde

Kim Wilde was born in 1960 in England. She was 21 when she released "Kids in America" in America. 21 is a young age, but no one is legally still a kid at that age. People can vote, drive, go to R-rated movies, and drink alcohol by that age. I think that's more than enough to qualify as being no longer a kid. She certainly isn't from America, or anywhere near it. This makes it strange that she says "We're the kids in America" including herself in the "We're" part. Listeners didn't care, as the song was a worldwide hit. It was a top ten hit in at least ten different countries, but ironically the song only climbed to number 25 in the country mentioned in the song.

9. What type of weather links where Gordon Lightfoot was with a dollar in his hand to the sweet stuff felt by Cat Stevens and the kind John Denver would walk through by the side of his true love?

From Quiz Musical Links On A Chain

Answer: Rain

Gordon Lightfoot sang:"In the early morning rain, with a dollar in my hand." In his version of a Christian hymn, Cat Stevens sang: "Sweet the rain's new fall, sunlit from Heaven." John Denver, meanwhile, sang: "I'll walk through the rain by your side, and I'll cling to the warmth of your tiny hand." Cat Stevens recorded "Morning Has Broken" in 1971. The song was too short for a three-minute pop record, so Rick Wakeman had to improvise a padded piano 'middle eight'. Gordon Lightfoot recorded "In The Early Morning Rain" in 1966. It was to become one of his best-known and most-covered songs. John Denver included "For Baby (For Bobbie)" on his 1972 album "Rocky Mountain High". He later said it was only the fourth song he had ever written, and the first of his own he recorded.

10. In 1955, rhythm and blues singer Johnny Ace had a posthumous number one hit R&B song titled "Pledging My Love". On Christmas Day in 1954, Ace took a break between sets and died under strange circumstances. How did he die?

From Quiz My Sincerest Apogees

Answer: He shot himself

On Christmas Day, John Marshall Alexander, Jr. died after a self inflicted gunshot would to the head with a .22 caliber revolver (although some sources claim it was a .32 caliber pistol). As witnesses were present, it was not deemed to be a suicide, but rather a case of misfortune. Band members said that he would often play with his gun between sets and often shot it at road signs when not performing. At first, it appeared to be that he was playing a game of Russian roulette with the revolver, but one witness, musician Big Mama Thornton, stated that: "Johnny Ace had been drinking and he had this little pistol he was waving around the table and someone said 'Be careful with that thing...' and he said 'It's okay! Gun's not loaded... see?' and pointed it at himself with a smile on his face and 'Bang!'". At the time of his death, Johnny Ace had been signed with Duke Records and was an up and coming blues musician. In 1954, he had recorded eight hits and was often found touring with Big Mama Thornton (a popular musician in her own right). It is believed that over 1.7 million copies of his recordings had been sold prior to his death. Unfortunately, tragedy struck that Christmas Day ending not only his life, but ending the career of a promising musician.

11. The song is "It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)". The prediction of the future "starts with an earthquake, birds and snakes..." Which group sang of this dire future?

From Quiz Bad Moon on the Rise

Answer: R.E.M.

"It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)" was a 1987 hit famous for its lightning-fast sequence of references and a long string of names of famous people with initials "L.B." "Leonard Bernstein" is a famously comprehensible lyric in the middle of the hard-to-hear jumble, but all of the madness is about the catastrophic end of the world if you listen close enough!

12. The title of this quiz - "A Long Long Time Ago" - is also the first line of what classic that references the 1959 plane crash that killed three rock and roll pioneers?

From Quiz A LONG, LONG Time Ago

Answer: American Pie

Don McLean's signature song, released in 1971, tells the story of "the day the music died". The phrase references the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. "Big Bopper" Richardson, and continues on with cryptic references to personalities and events of the 1960s. After reaching number one on music charts in several countries, the lyrics became a popular topic among music critics and radio disc jockeys as listeners speculated about their meaning. The song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2002.

13. "Flash, Bang, Wallop" comes from which musical film?

From Quiz "Flash, Bang, Wallop"

Answer: Half A Sixpence

"Flash, Bang, Wallop" is one of the big set piece songs from the 1967 Tommy Steele film, "Half A Sixpence". The story line, based on the H.G. Wells book "Kipps", is a simple poor boy makes good with complications along the way. Tommy Steele started his career in the 1950s as a rock and roll singer. He soon realised that he could have a better career as an all round entertainer, and in the 1960s he moved into stage and film musicals, as well as touring his one man show. His film credits include "Finian's Rainbow" (1968) and "The Happiest Millionaire" (1967). On stage he produced and starred in the 1983 revival of "Singing in the Rain" at the London Palladium. Multi-talented, he has also written books and is a respected sculptor. His statue of Eleanor Rigby is close to the Cavern Club in Liverpool and he has a statue of two rugby players at Twickenham stadium.

14. A song from a Broadway musical and movie includes these lyrics: "It only takes a moment, to be loved your whole life through". What show and movie is "It Only Takes a Moment" from?

From Quiz Just A Moment!

Answer: Hello Dolly

The first Broadway production of "Hello Dolly" starred Carol Channing in the title role. Other stars followed her, and the movie version starred Barbra Streisand. The production I saw starred the wonderful Mary Martin.

15. Helen Reddy reached #1 on the US Billboard charts with, which song that tells of a girl who "lives (her) life in the songs she hears"?

From Quiz Less Than Perfect

Answer: Angie Baby

The song, written by Alan O'Day, reached the top spot in December of 1974 and was Reddy's fifth number one US single. It deals with a girl who is somewhat "socially retarded" and living in a make believe world. The lyrics remain cryptic and tend to raise more issues than it provides answers - Is Angie a witch, what happened to the boy next door - Reddy, herself has always remained mute on the subject, preferring to hear how others have interpreted the work.

16. When Lady Gaga released a song called "The Edge of Glory", it was compared to a song called "Sin Miedo" by the singer, Soraya Arnelas. What nationality was she?

From Quiz The Edge of Glory & Other 'Same Song' Tales

Answer: Spanish

Soraya Arnelas was born in Spain in 1982 and was a popular singer in her native country. She represented Spain at the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest. "Sin Miedo", "Without Fear", was a single and title track of a 2008 album. In 2011, Clevver [sic] Music reported that Lady Gaga was, in their words, "getting heat for possibly copying a Spanish artist". It reported that some said "Edge of Glory" was, again in their words, "similar" to "Sin Miedo". Lady Gaga was also sued over claims that her song "Judas" copied the 1999 song "Juda" by Rebecca Fancescatti. Madonna, meanwhile, said that Gaga's "Born This Way" was "a wonderful way to redo my song "Express Yourself". [From "Newsweek"].

17. "Buckets of Rain" appeared on Bob Dylan's 1975 album "Blood on the Tracks" but earlier, in 1970, he recorded which song, with a bucket-like implement in its title, for his "Self Portrait" album?

From Quiz Sounds Like a Bucket

Answer: Copper Kettle

"Self Portrait" is a double album full of cover songs that received predominantly negative reviews from the critics. "Copper Kettle", however, was hailed as one of the few shining lights on the record. The song was written in 1946 by Alfred Frank Beddoe and it pays homage to the rebellion against the Whiskey Tax imposed by the US Government in 1791.

18. What kind of bold statement did Gerry and the Pacemakers make in 1964?

From Quiz Top of the Pops

Answer: I'm the One

'I'm the One' could almost be considered a let-down for Gerry and the Pacemakers. Released in January, 1964 the song only managed to get to number two on the UK (BBC Radio 1) charts. That's a bit deflating when you consider that their first three singles; 'How Do You Do It', 'I Like It' and 'You'll Never Walk Alone' all reached the coveted UK number one slot. They became the first act to have their first three singles all reach number one on the UK charts and it wasn't until 1983-84 that fellow Liverpudlians, 'Frankie Goes to Hollywood', matched the effort. (For the record) 'Headline News' is a 1964 song by Edwin Starr. 'Main Attraction' (1962) is by Pat Boone and 'Mr Wonderful' was released in 1957 by Peggy Lee.

19. The popular British music show "Top of the Pops" was first screened on the BBC1 television channel on New Years Day 1964. Which musical act was the first to take to the stage and perform?

From Quiz It Was a First

From Quiz Musical Guns

Answer: Billy and Janie

"Billy's Got a Gun" was first released on Def Leppard's "Pyromania" album, in 1983. Although released as a B Side in the US, it still reached the Top 30 in the Mainstream Rock Chart. 21. "Every lassie has her laddie / None they say have I" Can you identify this song by Scotland's most famous poet?

From Quiz Bawdy Ballads

Answer: Comin' Thro' the Rye

By Robert Burns. Not a bawdy song, you say? Check out the original lyrics, and you'll change your mind! Let's just say it wasn't kissing that the lad and lassie were up to out there in the rye grass. Many of Burns's songs, in their original versions, are not only bawdy, but downright pornographic. If he were alive today, Burns might well be working for Larry Flynt. By the way, "Comin' Thro' the Rye" is a good example a bawdy song that has been bowdlerized for general use. I remember babysitting my six-year-old niece and watching "Barney and Friends," when the children began singing a song called "Do Your Ears Hang Low?" I was shocked, because I knew the original song had referred not to "ears," but to a pair of organs unique to the masculine gender.

22. What is the most ironic thing about Alanis Morissette's single "Ironic"?

From Quiz Great Ironies In Music

Answer: It doesn't contain a single example of irony

All of the situations in Morissette's song are POTENTIALLY ironic, but none of them are elaborated enough to actually fit the title of the song. Perhaps the Irish comedian Ed Byrne summed it up best when he said "There's nothing ironic about being stuck in a traffic jam when you're late for something. Unless you're a town planner. If you were a town planner and you were on your way to a seminar of town planners at which you were giving a talk on how you solved the problem of traffic congestion in your area, and couldn't get to it because you were stuck in a traffic jam, that'd be well ironic." The other three options are all lines from "Ironic".

23. Damian Marley's song "Welcome to Jamrock" earned major success on the reggae charts, thanks in part to its haunting sample of the phrase, "Out in the streets, they call it murder." From what song were the words drawn?

From Quiz Egotistical Songs or Lyrics

Answer: Right Said Fred

26. Which classic song by the Police has a laugh at the beginning of the song?

From Quiz Mistakes in Popular Songs

Answer: Roxanne

You can also hear a weird keyboard sound right before the laughter. The story is that Sting accidentally sat on the keyboard. The band decided that they liked the odd sound so they kept the take. The song charted in seven different countries from 1979-1980, and again in four countries from 1997-1998, so I guess they were right.

27. This song by Queen is a hate letter to the band's first manager. What is it called?

From Quiz Songs That Criticize the Music Industry

Answer: Death on Two Legs

In the early 1970s Queen were in a really bad place. They had recorded three albums and a couple of hit songs such as "Killer Queen" and "Now I'm Here," which helped their third album, "Sheer Heart Attack" reach gold. They had toured around the world, often as headliners. However, they weren't making any money. They had signed a bad contract with Norman Sheffield, that resulted in Queen not making the money they deserved. So, they cut ties with him, got a new manager, and recorded their Make-or-Break fourth album "A Night at the Opera." The first song on the album was called "Death on Two Legs" and it's about Sheffield. The song begins with a piano solo that requires the skills of a virtuoso like Freddie Mercury to play, then when the song gets going, it's a hard rock song. Freddie Mercury sounds seriously angry in the lyrics and in his voice. Sheffield has tried to sue Queen for defamation of character over this song but he wasn't successful.

28. The song "My Old Kentucky Home" is played most famously at what event?

From Quiz Popular Music Anthems

Answer: Horse race

"My Old Kentucky Home" is played at Churchill Downs during the parade to the post for the Kentucky Derby. The song was composed in 1852 by Stephen Foster and is actually an anti-slavery song that was likely inspired by "Uncle Tom's Cabin". In 1928 the song was made the state song of Kentucky, and a change was made to the lyrics to replace the objectionable word "darkies" with "people". "My Old Kentucky Home" started being played at the Kentucky Derby in 1921.

29. 'Give me Rush, give me 'Marquee Moon'...' 'Marquee Moon' was the debut album by which American post-punk band, fronted by Tom Verlaine?

From Quiz Irking the Purists

Answer: Television

'Marquee Moon' was Television's debut album, released in 1977. Tom Verlaine, the band's lead singer, was heavily influenced by jazz; he took up the saxophone as a child after hearing an album by Stan Getz. He was also a big fan of Miles Davis. Verlaine founded the Neon Boys with bassist Richard Hell and drummer Billy Ficca, and the group went on to become Television. Richard Hell later left to form Richard Hell and the Voidoids. Their first press review was written by Patti Smith, who had seen them at CBGBs and went on to become famous in her own right.

30. In a 1988 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Robert Plant, the former lead singer of Led Zeppelin, said that he was tired of which song?

From Quiz More Hit Songs Hated by their Makers

Answer: Stairway to Heaven

"I'd break out in hives if I had to sing that song in every show. I wrote those lyrics and found that song to be of some importance and consequence in 1971, but 17 years later, I don't know" said Robert Plant in 1988. His opinion hadn't improved much in 2002, when he donated money to a Portland radio station so they would STOP playing the song. In 1971, Led Zeppelin released their 4th album, Led Zeppelin IV. The album has sold over 37 million copies worldwide, making it one of the highest-selling and most influential rock albums of all time. Although there are many popular songs on this album, the song most responsible for the album's legendary status is the 8-minute epic, "Stairway to Heaven." Despite not being released as a single, "Stairway to Heaven" has been played on radio stations over 2 million times. One radio DJ once estimated that it would take 44 years to play the song back-to-back that many times. Guitarist Jimmy Page said that they intentionally never released it as a single to get people to buy the whole album. This smart move paid off well. So it's no wonder Plant grew tired of the song. From his comments that I have read, I don't think Plant really hated the song, I just think he got tired of it. In my opinion, if a song gets played so many times that you get tired of it, that just means it's a really great and/or well-loved song.
