Bible Plants and Animals Trivia Questions

1. A song led by Moses starts this way in the NKJV: "I will sing to the LORD for He has triumphed gloriously! The horse and its rider He has thrown into the sea!" In what book do you find such a song?

From Quiz
Bible Cats, Camels & Other Critters

Answer: Exodus

Exodus is the correct answer. I find it highly amusing that Moses describes himself in Exodus 4:10 in the NKJV as being "slow of speech and slow of tongue", however, when it came to singing this particular song, he was front and center in leading the Israelites. The song was performed by the Israelites after God miraculously parted the Red Sea, enabling them to flee from Egypt with the Pharaoh's army in hot pursuit. According to Scripture, the water ceased to be parted when the soldiers were part way across the Red Sea and they all drowned along with their horses. In the NKJV, the song is titled the 'Song of Moses'. (See Exodus 15:1-20.) Scripture also tells of Moses' sister Miriam taking a timbrel and leading the Israelite women in song as well. Question submitted by Cowrofl

2. Who offered to water the camels of Abraham's servant who was on a mission to find a wife for Isaac? (Genesis 24:19-20)

From Quiz Let's Take a Look at Camels in the Bible

Answer: Rebekah

Rebekah is the correct answer. Genesis 24:12-14 tells of an unnamed servant of Abraham standing by a well and praying to God for a sign informing him about the right woman to pick as a wife for Isaac. According to Scripture, the servant had been sent to Mesopotamia by Abraham to find a wife for his only son. (In the NIV, Mesopotamia is referred to as Aram Naharaim.) As part of the prayer request, the servant asked God that a sign the woman is the right one for Isaac would be when he asked her for a drink she would oblige and also offer to give his camels some water. Verse 15 goes on to state that before he had finished praying, Rebekah came out with her jar on her shoulder. The rest, as they say, is history.

3. What man on his death bed referred to his son Judah as a lion?

From Quiz Let's Take a Look at Lions in the Bible

Answer: Jacob

Jacob, on his death bed, referred to Judah as a lion, as per Genesis 49:9. In the verse, Jacob states: "Judah is a lion's whelp; from the prey, my son, you have gone up. He bows down, he lies down as a lion; and as a lion, who shall rouse him?" Judah's mother was Leah, as per Genesis 35:23. Scripture states Leah gave birth to five other boys and one girl. Their names were Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Issachar, Zebulun and Dinah.

4. According to Genesis 49:27, which one of his twelve sons did Jacob call a "ravenous wolf"?

From Quiz Dogs, Foxes and Wolves in the Bible

Answer: Benjamin

Benjamin is the correct answer. Genesis 49 tells of Jacob on his deathbed, sharing his last words with his twelve sons. Benjamin, his youngest son, was the last one to be addressed and Jacob's comments are captured in Verse 27: "Benjamin is a ravenous wolf; in the morning he shall devour the prey, and at night he shall divide the spoil."

5. According to Genesis 32:13-15, to whom did Jacob give forty cows and ten bulls, as well as a number of other animals?

From Quiz Let's Take a Look at Cattle in the Bible

Answer: Esau

Genesis 32:13-15 tells of Jacob presenting forty cows and ten bulls as well as a large number of other animals to his brother Esau. The animals included two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams, as well as twenty female donkeys and ten foals. According to Genesis 32:1-21 and 33:1-17, Jacob was deeply perturbed when he saw Esau approaching him with four hundred men but the encounter ended up being a pleasurable affair with peace being the order of the day. The reason Jacob was perturbed when he saw Esau approaching is that he feared for his life. According to Genesis 27:41, Esau was plotting to kill Jacob to avenge the fact his younger brother tricked their father Isaac into blessing him while Esau was out hunting game to make a savory dish for Isaac. Scripture goes on to tell of Jacob fleeing to Haran in Padan Aram, also known as Mesopotamia, where his mother Rebekah came from. While in Haran, Jacob ended up marrying Leah and Rachel, two daughters of Laban, who was Rebekah's brother. While Jacob was expecting the worst when he encountered Esau a number of years later, he had no cause to fear. In fact, it was a heart-warming reunion between the two brothers.

6. According to Genesis 20:14, the king of Gerar gave Abraham oxen as well as sheep and male and female servants. What was the name of the king who made the presentation to Abraham? (In the NIV, the king's name is spelled slightly different.)

From Quiz Let's Take a Look at Oxen in the Bible

Answer: Abimelech

Abimelech, known as Abimelek in the NIV, is the correct answer. It's a bit of a long story, but Abimelech gave Abraham an unspecified number of oxen and sheep as well as male and female servants after he had made Sarah a member of his harem. The king took such action after he had been informed Sarah was Abraham's sister and not his wife. According to Genesis 12:11, Sarah was extremely beautiful and, as per the custom of the day, the king would want to add her to his harem, especially if she was not married. If the king added Sarah to his harem knowing she was married, he would've had to kill Abraham first. As a result, Abraham and Sarah pretended to be siblings to save Abraham's life. Genesis 20:3 tells of God informing Abimelech in a dream "you are a dead man because of the woman whom you have taken... is a man's wife." In Verse 6, God tells Abimelech He prevented him from touching Sarah and that he must return her to Abraham. Scripture goes on to tell of the king returning Sarah to Abraham, just as God commanded. Verse 14 states, "Then Abimelech took sheep, oxen, and male and female servants and gave them to Abraham and he restored Sarah his wife to him."

7. According to Genesis 27:16, what woman put skins of goats on the hands of her son to deceive her husband?

From Quiz Let's Take a Look at Goats in the Bible

Answer: Rebekah

Rebekah put skins of goats on the hands of her son Jacob to trick Isaac into blessing him over his slightly older twin brother Esau. According to Scripture, Isaac was elderly and frail and his eyes "were so dim that he could not see." The ruse is recounted in Genesis 27:1-40. Rebekah favored Jacob while Isaac favored Esau and this is where things fall apart. Scripture states Rebekah convinced Jacob to disguise himself as Esau to obtain his brother's blessing. Isaac had requested Esau to hunt game for him and make some "savory food' and when he returned he would bless his son. Rebekah overheard the conversation and swung into action. Genesis 27:15-17, in the NKJV, states: "Then Rebekah took the choice clothes of her elder son Esau, which were with her in the house, and put them on Jacob her younger son. And she put the skins of the kids of the goats on his hands and on the smooth part of his neck. Then she gave the savory food and the bread, which she had prepared, into the hand of her son Jacob." Jacob in turn went to his father and impersonated Esau. He was so effective at his impersonation he was able to deceive Isaac and receive Esau's blessing. (The goat skins also created the impression he was a hairy man like his brother Esau.)

8. "I will sing to the LORD for He has triumphed gloriously! The horse and its rider He has thrown into the sea!" is the beginning of a song in the Old Testament. In what book do you find such a song?

From Quiz Let's Take a Look at Horses in the Bible

Answer: Exodus

Moses may have been "slow of speech and slow of tongue" but that certainly didn't stop him from leading the Israelites in song, as per Exodus 15:1-18. Appropriately, the song is called the 'Song of Moses' in the New King James Version Bible. Moses led the Israelites in singing the song just after the Red Sea was miraculously parted and they made it safely to the other side. It was a different story for the Egyptian army which was in pursuit of the Israelites. Scripture reports the water ceased to be parted when the soldiers were part way across the Red Sea and they all drowned. Hence, the song begins with these words: "I will sing to the LORD for He has triumphed gloriously! The horse and its rider He has thrown into the sea!" Scripture goes on to tell of Moses' sister Miriam taking a timbrel and dancing, while leading the Israelite women in a victory song as well.

9. What prophet of God states in the NKJV, "All we like sheep have gone astray"?

From Quiz Let's Take a Look at Sheep in the Bible -- #2

Answer: Isaiah

The statement "all we like sheep have gone astray" is found in Isaiah 53:6. To put the verse in context, here's how Isaiah 53:4-7 reads in the NKJV: "Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth." Many Christians believe Isaiah 53:4-7 prophesies about the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. Isaiah was the the son of Amoz and he prophesied during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.

10. According to the Old Testament, what wealthy man owned fourteen thousand sheep?

From Quiz Let's Take a Look at Sheep in the Bible -- #1

Answer: Job

Job is the correct answer. According to Job 42:12, Job, in his latter days, owned fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, one thousand yoke of oxen, and one thousand female donkeys. Job, of course, had his life turned upside down and inside out when he was beset with a series of calamities. According to Job 1, his seven sons and three daughters died when a windstorm toppled the house they were in while he ended up in deteriorating health. On top of this, Job lost all his material wealth. According to Job 1:3 he originally had seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred female donkeys, making him "the greatest of all the people of the East." However, after suffering through his calamities, Scripture tells of God blessing Job immensely in his latter days. Job 42 tells of Job becoming the father of seven sons and three daughters once again, enjoying good health and basically having twice as much material wealth as before.

11. Abraham gave Abimelech seven ewe (female) lambs. What was their importance? (Genesis 21)

From Quiz Mary Had a Little Lamb

Answer: The lambs were meant to be witnesses of the well that Abraham dug.

Genesis 21:27-34 states that Abraham gave Abimelech sheep and oxen so that the two could form a covenant. Verse 28 specifically states that Abraham took seven ewe lambs from the flock and placed them by themselves. Abimelech asked what the lambs meant and Abraham replied that they would serve as witnesses to the well, which Abraham dug. According to Genesis 20, Abraham had a different encounter with Abimelech. Abraham lied to Abimelech by telling him that Sarah was his sister and not wife, so Abimelech took Sarah as *his* wife. God appeared to Abimelech in a dream and told him to release Sarah back to Abraham. Abimelech did give Sarah back. In addition, Abimelech gave Abraham sheep and oxen (Genesis 20:14).

Answer: God told the serpent it would crawl on its belly and eat dust.

God was very sad that the serpent had convinced Eve to eat the fruit of the tree of good and evil. Eve had given the fruit to Adam as well. Because of their actions, man would have to live in pain and suffer. God said to the serpent, "Because you have done this, you are cursed more than any livestock and more than any wild animal. You will move on your belly and eat dust all the days of your life." God told Adam and Eve that they would have a descendant someday that the serpent would hurt very badly. However the same descendant would crush the serpent's head. One day they would have a deliverer who would fix what had been destroyed. (Genesis 3:14)

15. Who or what shall a dog not "move his tongue" against according to Exodus 11:7?

From Quiz Dogs in the Bible

Answer: any of the children of Israel

It says in Exodus 11:7, "But against any of the children of Israel shall not a dog move his tongue, against man or beast: that ye may know how that the LORD doth put a difference between the Egyptians and Israel." Sometimes "dog" is a metaphor and does not necessarily mean the four-legged furry canine. In this case it is a warning that no one should mess with God's people (that is, the children of Israel).

16. What three-letter animal is mentioned in Proverbs as being an example of industriousness?

From Quiz Biblical Fauna

Answer: ant

Proverbs 6:6 says, "Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways and be wise" (KJV). The ant was the epitome of industriousness and used an example for lazy individuals.

17. In Micah 1 (KJV), Micah said that he would mourn like an ___. Give me the bird.

From Quiz Give Me the Bird

Answer: Owl

Micah 1:8 (KJV) reads, "Therefore I will wail and howl, I will go stripped and naked: I will make a wailing like the dragons, and mourning as the owls." Owls are described in the Bible as "mournful in voice", "solitary in disposition", and "careful of [their] young". Owls are listed in sixteen verses in the Old Testament of the King James Version Bible.

18. "Tares", as used in the context of Matthew 13:40 (KJV), would correspond to what type of plant in modern English?

From Quiz Biblical Flora

Answer: weeds

These are mentioned in Matthew 13:24-30 which is Jesus' parable of the sower. Biblical scholars think the term "tares" refers to the bearded darnel which closely resembles wheat, but is a poisonous plant.

19. "There will be loud wailing throughout Egypt - worse than there has ever been or ever will be again. But among the Israelites not a dog will bark at any person or animal." (Exodus 11 v. 6-7) Which event is being described in this quotation?

From Quiz In the Beg-inning, Dog

Answer: The killing of every firstborn Egyptian son

The modern Canaan dog is the descendant of the so-called pariah dogs that would have roamed wild in the Palestine of biblical times. There are several dog breeds that are said to have had their origin in ancient Egypt but to ask which of these the Israelites might have had in their midst is to miss the point. The writer is trying to communicate a theological point rather than a literal one. The Egyptians are laid low by the devastating power of God. The Israelites, by contrast, protected by God, aren't even threatened by the empty growl of a dog.

20. What bird is used as a symbol of the Holy Spirit in the bible?

From Quiz Birds of Pray(er)

Answer: dove

"And when Jesus was baptized, He went up immediately from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and alighting on Him." (Matthew 3:16 RSV). The story of Noah and the great flood also features the dove. Noah sent out a dove to find dry land. When the dove returned with an olive branch, Noah knew there was dry land somewhere.

21. Scripture states God created the world in seven days. According to Genesis 1:11, on what day were trees created?

From Quiz Out on a Limb -- A Look at Trees in the Bible

Answer: Day 3

Trees were created on the third day, the same day God created the land and the seas. Genesis 1:11, in the NIV Bible, states: "Then God said, 'Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.' And it was so."

22. One of the Old Testament prophets had a name that, in the Hebrew language, meant "dove". Who was this man?

From Quiz The Birds and The Bees in the Bible

Answer: Jonah or "Yonah"

Jonah's name means "dove" or "pigeon". (Hebrew - Yonah) Interestingly, we read that when Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist, the Holy Spirit came down and landed like a dove on Jesus as the Father spoke from heaven, saying,"This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." (Matthew 3:17) As far as I can determine, Jonah is the only Old Testament prophet that Jesus ever compares himself with. In Matthew 12:40, Jesus speaks of the similarity between Jonah's past "entombment" in the fish's belly with His own pending entombment that was to precede His resurrection.

23. There is a Scripture in the Bible that mentions two big cats: lions and leopards. The Scripture is found in Canticles. By what other name is Canticles known?

From Quiz Biblical Lions

Answer: Song of Solomon

Song of Solomon is abbreviated Ca in the New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures, because it is alternately called the Canticles. Chapter four and verse eight of Song of Solomon says, "With me from Lebanon, O bride, with me from Lebanon may you come. May you descend from the top of Anti-Lebanon, from the top of Senir, even Hermon, from the lair of lions, from the mountains of leopards." This Scripture shows that lions lived in Palestine, although they are extinct there now. Other Scriptures, such as Jeremiah 49:19, show them as living along the Jordan river.

From Quiz Uncle Al's Bible Animals

27. In Exodus 12:21-22 (NASB), what plant did God tell the Israelites to use to paint lamb's blood on the doorposts during the first Passover?

From Quiz Plants, People & Things That Grew in the Bible

Answer: hyssop

The correct answer is hyssop, which had other ceremonial uses. While the other three plants are similar to hyssop, they are not found in the Bible. In Exodus 12:27 (NASB), God describes the meaning of the blood on the doorposts. 'It is a Passover sacrifice to the Lord because He passed over the houses of the sons of Israel in Egypt when He struck the Egyptians, but spared our homes." Jesus obediently fulfilled His Father's eternal plan when He became the sinless Lamb of God (John 1:29 NASB) who shed His blood on the cross as the atoning sacrifice once for all our sins. Rachel is the correct answer with the unusual story told in the 31st chapter of Genesis. Verse 19 tells of Rachel stealing the household gods after her husband Jacob had a quarrel with her father Laban. Verses 34-35, in the NIV Bible, tells what happened when Laban went looking for his missing items: "Now Rachel had taken the household gods and put them inside her camel's saddle and was sitting on them. Laban searched through everything in the tent but found nothing. Rachel said to her father, 'Don't be angry, my lord, that I cannot stand up in your presence; I'm having my period.'
