Baseball Players Trivia Questions

1. Bob Feller is in the club of pitchers who threw 3 or more no-hitters. In addition to that though, he pitched an amazing 12 one-hitters. There is one player who hit that lone hit in 2 of those 12 one-hitters. Who was it?

From Quiz
Fascinating and Obscure Baseball Trivia, Part 1

Answer: Bobby Doerr

"The Heater from Van Meter" Bob Feller pitched for the Cleveland Indians beginning in 1936 and until 1956. Tony Kubek didn't enter the MLB until 1957, Orlando Cepeda entered in 1958, and Willie McCovey was a rookie in 1959. There is another Bobby Doerr/Bob Feller connection: When Bob Feller died in 2010, he was the second oldest living member of the Hall of Fame...Bobby Doerr was the oldest. Mr. Doerr, has since died however, in 2017. Other pitchers who have thrown three or more no-hitters: Nolan Ryan pitched 7 no-hitters. Sandy Koufax threw four. Larry Corcoran, Cy Young, Bob Feller and Justin Verlander each have three no-hitters.

2. In the infamous Cookie Game of the 1947 World Series, Cookie Lavagetto hit a two-out double in the ninth inning to ruin the no-hitter of which Yankees pitcher?

From Quiz Random Baseball

Answer: Bill Bevens

In game 6 of the 1947 World Series with the Dodgers facing the Yankees, pitcher Bill Bevens took a no-hitter into the ninth inning. Then Harry "Cookie" Lavagetto of the Dodgers stepped up to the plate, he hammered an opposite-field double off the left field wall in Ebbets Field. This double scored two runners (Al Gionfriddo and Eddie Miksis) and gave the Dodgers the momentum they needed to win the game, but ultimately they lost to the Yankees in game 7. This was actually Cookie Lavagetto's last hit in a major league baseball game. He wasn't even in the starting lineup, he was called off of the bench to replace Eddie Stanky. He went on to manage the Washington Senators/Minnesota Twins for four years before being replaced due to a 271-384 win/loss record.

3. This Tommy John surgery survivor had never pitched in the majors before having the procedure in 1985. He went on to pitch a perfect game, win two World Series titles and make three all-star teams during a 21 season career. Who was he?

From Quiz Appetite For Reconstruction

Answer: David Wells

Among the options only Wells was a pitcher. Wells pitched a perfect game in 1998 for the Yankees. He also pitched for the Blue Jays, Padres, Tigers, Reds, Orioles, Red Sox, White Sox and Dodgers over his career. He retired with 211 career victories. ------ Tommy John played 26 seasons over a 27 year span, missing the 1975 season due to the surgery which now bears his name. The surgery is officially known as ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction. Prior to it being conducted on Tommy John in late 1974, no player had ever returned to a career in the majors. John not only returned, but thrived, pitching until age 46 (14 seasons after the surgery) and making three all star teams. The surgery, which takes a tendon from elsewhere in the body and places it in the elbow, has become commonplace within the world of baseball.

4. Who is credited with the most MLB pitching wins: Paul 'Daffy' Dean, Jerome 'Dizzy' Dean, Dean Chance or Wayland Dean?

From Quiz Baseball Name Game

Answer: Dizzy Dean

Dizzy Dean was one of the most dominating pitchers of the 1930s. A line drive off his foot at the 1937 All Star game changed his pitching motion and his effectiveness declined. After retirement he became a popular television sportscaster, much to the chagrin of English teachers due his poor grasp of grammar. (Dizzy said thing like "he slud into third") He won 150 games. Dizzy always referred to his brother as 'Paul' but the newspapers and fans liked to call him 'Daffy'. Paul had a couple of good seasons in 1934/35 when he won 38 games. But Dizzy won 58 games those years. Dizzy and Daffy won 96 games between them for the Gashouse Cardinals. Paul 'Daffy' Dean won only 12 games the rest of his career. Dean Chance won 128 games in his 11 year career with 5 teams. He was the winner of the Cy Young award in 1964 and the Comeback Player of the Year in 1967. Upon retirement he became a carnival and boxing promoter. Wayland Dean stuggled for three years in the 1920s, ending with an ERA just under five.

5. Other players were green with envy when he hit four home runs in a game in 2002. He averaged 22 home runs per season in his career, and wore the number 15 on his back. Who is this slugger?

11. Hugh Mulcahy spent nine years with the Phillies and Pirates during the 1930s and 1940s, compiling a 42-89 lifetime won-lost record. When you have that kind of career, a simple, straightforward nickname seems apropos. What was Mulcahy's nickname?

From Quiz Baseball Careers They'd Rather Forget

Answer: Losing Pitcher

"Losing Pitcher" Mulcahy's nickname came from the wire service feeds that would come in to the newspapers. Answer: Germany Schaefer

Yes, this actually happened. On August 4th in a game against the Chicago White Sox, Germany was on first and Clyde Milan was on third. Hoping to bait the catcher to throw to him so Clyde could steal home, Germany stole second but catcher Fred Payne didn't bite. In an outlandish decision, Schaefer decided to steal first which, at this time, was technically legal. Once again, Payne didn't throw, but White Sox manager Hugh Duffy did throw something - a fit. He came out and argued because no other player on record had ever stolen first. In the midst of the tirade, Germany tried to go for second again but the second baseman got the ball in time; instead of tagging Schaefer he threw to home and got Clyde Milan out when he tried to steal home. Allegedly, this wasn't the first time that Schaefer stole first but the other attempt's authenticity is questionable. This was just one event on a laundry list of Schaefer's antics which included, but is not limited to, wearing a fake mustache to the plate, wearing a rain coat to the plate (both of which got him ejected), hitting a home run off Rube Wadell and shooting the bat like a gun at him after each base, and even calling a home run off of the White Sox's Doc White in a pinch hit appearance.
