Nintendo Games Mixture Trivia Questions

1. The very first July/August 1988 issue of "Nintendo Power" features a famous claymation sculpture of Mario and the new protagonist of "Super Mario Bros. 2". Who is the final boss of "Super Mario Bros. 2"?

From Quiz
From the Covers of "Nintendo Power"!

Answer: Wart

For subscribers of the "Nintendo Fun Club Letter", Nintendo sent out that first issue of "Nintendo Power" for free. That first issue established so many of the features that would characterize much of its content for years: Classified Information (tricks and codes), Counselor's Corner (tips on how to get through difficult parts of the game), reader letters and feedback, expansive coverage of new games, as well as information on future releases that in some cases never materialized. The story of Nintendo's conversion of the originally unrelated "Yume Kojo: Doki Doki Panic" into "Super Mario Bros. 2" is well known to Nintendo fans. The final boss is Wart, who promptly disappears from the Mario franchise just as quickly as he appeared, with only fleeting references to him in the decades after his initial appearance. His most notable subsequent appearance would be in the 1993 Gameboy title "The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening" as a cameo.

2. In what year was the original Nintendo Game Boy released in Japan and North America?

From Quiz Pixels on a Peridot Screen

Answer: 1989

The original Nintendo Game Boy was first released in Japan on April 21, 1989. It was released in North America on July 31, 1989. Europe would not see the Game Boy arrive until September 28, 1990. Upon its release only six games were available, though a lot more would be made later as the popularity of the Game Boy increased. The original Game Boy would continue to see production until 2003, even after the release of more powerful successors, such as the Game Boy Color (1998) and Game Boy Advance (2001).

3. "Super Smash Bros. Brawl" has a Smash Ball. What happens when a fighter breaks it?

From Quiz Twenty Questions: Nintendo

Answer: Final Smash

When a Smash Ball comes in, that means you'll have a chance to use your Final Smash in battle. This item also appeared in "for 3DS/Wii U" and "Ultimate".

4. Which series of games uses TMs and HMs?

From Quiz Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, or Pokemon?

Answer: Pokemon

TMs and HMs, abbreviations of Technical Machines and Hidden Machines, are used in the "Pokemon" universe to give your Pokemon special abilities to be used in battle. HMs, given to you under rare circumstances, also had applications outside of battle that made more sense for utility depending on the situation (like Cut, Fly, and Surf). In the original "Pokemon" game there were fifty TMs and only five HMs, but each successive game added more to the list to increase Pokemon viability.

5. What video game had a gold gun?

From Quiz People's Champs

Answer: Perfect Dark

Rare, which later went to Microsoft after creating a single game for the GameCube ("Star Fox Adventures") saw major success with titles on the Nintendo 64 and none may have been as popular as "Goldeneye 007" which not only won Game of the Year from "Nintendo Power", but ended up being an easy 'Player's Choice' winner for colossal sales. Rare followed up the first-person shooter game with an original IP, "Perfect Dark", which saw the return of the Golden Gun, a powerful firearm pulled straight from "The Man with the Golden Gun", known to kill foes with one bullet. "Perfect Dark" released in 2000.

6. Which was the first 3-D console game by Nintendo?

From Quiz Video Games

Answer: 'Star Fox'

'Star Fox' was created by Shigeru Miyamoto. The original 'Star Fox' game was the first 3D game which was released on Super Nintendo Entertainment System, better known as SNES.

7. Which green, apple loving, two-legged chap made his debut in "Super Mario World"?

From Quiz You Can Always Tell a Nintendo

Answer: Yoshi

Yoshi the dinosaur gains energy from eating apples. Such a cute character with a saddle, but not easy to control or command. His front legs are more like arms, but are legs as he is an animal.

8. Perhaps the highest-profile release on the launch date of the Wii U was what mini-game-filled title which was packaged with many of the console units?

From Quiz Wii U Launch Titles

Answer: Nintendo Land

Developed by Nintendo's in-house game creators (their EAD), "Nintendo Land" was essentially the "Wii Sports" of the Wii U, enabling the player to test the first capabilities of the console's tablet controller early on. The game featured a number of unique mini-games, some of which featured familiar worlds and concepts to the Nintendo canon (eg. "Pikmin", "The Legend of Zelda", "Luigi's Mansion", etc.) while others were more traditional games. The game was one of the top-sellers in the early days of the console partly because, like with "Wii Sports", it came as part of a bundle with the Wii U itself.

9. 8:00 PM - To begin our all-nighter, I turn on the Wii so we can play a "Mario Party" game. Which game are we playing?

From Quiz A Gamer's Dream Night

Answer: Mario Party 9

"Mario Party 9" came out in 2012. It was the second "Mario Party" game released for the Nintendo Wii. "Mario Party 9" was different from all the other "Mario Party" games because it was the first in the series to have all the players in the same vehicle, and not in different locations around the board.

10. In the frustratingly difficult Hudson Soft game "Milon's Secret Castle", what two items does the player have to retrieve from the tower and fireplace? (Note: These items are used to open the door to the fourth floor.)

From Quiz Random NES/SNES/Gameboy Challenge!

Answer: Cane, Crown

The Crown and Cane are needed. Both are deep inside the castle, and are retrieved by revealing the fake princesses. To reach the depths of the castle you must go through a hidden fire place and one of the castle's two towers. The feather, saw, sword, crystal ball, and hammer are all in game items but not used for opening the door to the fourth floor. The big key is from the "Zelda" series.

11. Which famous series stars two portly plumbers going through the land of the Mushroom Kingdom?

From Quiz Nintendo Franchises

Answer: Mario

The original "Super Mario Bros" first came out in September 13, 1985 in Japan on the NES and has spawned many spin-offs, including "Wario", "Yoshi", "Mario Party", "Mario Tennis", and "Paper Mario", just to name a few. The original game has been remade on Game and Watch, arcade, SNES, Virtual Console for the Wii, and 3DS.

12. To help sell their new Nintendo Entertainment System after the video game crash of 1983 and '84, Nintendo released a new peripheral to play your Nintendo games with. What was the name of this peripheral?

From Quiz All About Nintendo!

Answer: ROB the Robot

ROB stands for Robotic Operating Buddy. It was infamous for being loud, slow, and unresponsive, but without ROB, the original NES wouldn't have sold. Only two games were compatible with it, "Stack-Up" and "Gyromite." ROB would later be a playable character in "Super Smash Bros. Brawl" and "Mario Kart DS".

13. #10 - "Fortune Street" (Wii) - Who is the only unlockable character from the "Mario" series in this game?

From Quiz Noteworthy Games of 2011

Answer: Princess Peach & Peach

A staple in most board games that have a Mario theme in them, Princess Peach surprisingly, is a locked character that can be unlocked by beating the Peach's Castle Board in second place or higher in Tour mode. "Fortune Street" is not your usual everyone plays mini-games between turns board game. Many people have said that "Fortune Street" combines the "Mario Party" franchise with Monopoly. However, Mario characters are not the only playable characters as the very famous "Dragon Quest" franchise characters are also playable. Many of the boards that you play on are based off Mario and Dragon Quest locales. "Fortune Street" is a game in the series of the "Itadaki Street" franchise famous only in Japan. "Fortune Street" is the first game of the series to be released outside of Japan. The goal of this game is to amass a net profit of a set goal at the start of the game. One of the main goals of the game is to get promotions which can be obtained by collecting four emblems (diamond, club, spade, and heart) then returning to the bank. Also you will invest some of your money in businesses you can buy and the goal is to get a monopoly to increase your net worth. Once you reach the target goal of your net worth you need to rush back to the bank to win the game. In addition to these concepts you also can invest in stocks which can help you out and there are empty lots where you can build businesses such as tax offices. You can also buy out your opponent's businesses if you have the right amount of money. You can play with friends over the Wi-fi connection too. Unlockable characters from the "Dragon Quest" franchise are Jessica, Dragonlord, and Patty. Sadly though, "Fortune Street" does have two major flaws. The first one being is that in single-player Tour Mode you can only play as your Mii. If you've been waiting forever to play as Bowser in a board game you'll have to play multiplayer. Also these games, do take quite a long time, usually a few hours, and if you're playing with friends you'll have to play through the whole thing as there's no save function in multiplayer but there's one in single-player mode...strange.

14. #10 - "Kirby's Epic Yarn" (Wii) - What is the name of the stage in where you turn into almost every transformation you have encountered before?

From Quiz Noteworthy Games of 2010

Answer: Meta Melon Isle & MetaMelon Isle

The little pink puffball from Pop Star, kind of strayed from the norm of the majority of his games. In this game, the main villain Yin-Yarn, sucks Kirby into a magical sock and transports him to Patch Land which causes Kirby to be made out of yarn. Because Kirby is made out of yarn he can't inhale baddies as air just goes right through him. While Kirby cannot copy enemies' abilities anymore, Kirby can use a piece of string as a lasso and either unravel enemies or hold them as a means of attack. "Kirby's Epic Yarn" was really praised for its unique style of graphics but was criticized due to its easiness. Kirby games are known for being easy but you can't even die in this game. If you get hit by an enemy or fall down a cliff you just end up losing beads, which depending on how many you get at the end of the level determines what medal you get on it. The highest honor you can get is a Gold Medal and the lowest is a wood medal. If you get a high enough bead score against a boss you can also get a patch which will open up extra levels. These bonus levels include Meta Melon Isle in Dream Land. In addition to collecting beads, there are three treasures in each level. 15. #10 - "DJ Hero" (Wii) - What is NOT a color of a button on the turntable peripheral?

From Quiz Noteworthy Games of 2009

Answer: yellow

"DJ Hero," much like its predecessor the "Guitar Hero" series, was also available on XBox 360 and Playstation 3 game consoles. Also the game was released with a new peripheral in the shape of a DJ Deck. The game still followed pressing colored buttons when they came down the track, but also there was a slide used for crossfading, an effect dial for distorting sound or cycling through tracks, and a button used for releasing Euphoria which is the "DJ Hero" version of Star Power. Also to boost your score, if accumulating a long enough streak you can rewind the track. Many of the songs you will play in this game are mixes of two songs such as "Feel Good Inc." by the Gorillaz being mixed with "Hollaback Girl" by Gwen Stefani. Much like "Guitar Hero" the game has a varied soundtrack by going back to older songs such as "I Heard it Through the Grapevine" by Marvin Gaye. Unlike "Guitar Hero" the new peripheral only has three buttons, green, red, and blue, and the record surface that these buttons are located on can be moved back and forth for scratching and twist a full revolution for rewinds. Also the game sponsors multiplayer either with two turntable peripherals or a turntable peripheral and a guitar controller, but only for certain songs.
