Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When opportunity knocked, all Luke Perry had to do was open the door

Answer: Doorknob factory worker

Like many aspiring actors Luke Perry took on various jobs to support himself while waiting for his breakthrough. These included working as a shoe salesman, a cook and laying paving as well as the time spent in a factory which made doorknobs. After some small roles, Perry made his big breakthrough when he landed the role of Dylan McKay in the popular teen series 'Beverly Hills, 90210'.

He remained on the show from 1990 until 1995, returning for a further two years between 1998 and 2000. Luke continued working regularly on both television and in films, but died at the age of only 52 in 2019 following a stroke.
2. Jack Lemmon hung around in bars a lot before we heard of him. He might have tickled your fancy if you'd been there too

Answer: Piano player

Jack Lemmon wasn't just a talented actor, he was an excellent pianist. At times, he was able to showcase both skills on the big screen. He learnt to play as a child and is quoted as saying that he played the piano every day. While studying acting he helped out at the Old Knick Music Hall with various tasks, including entertaining the clientele by 'tickling the ivories'.

He didn't always get paid, but said he at least got a free meal. His acting career was a successful one, with regular screen roles between 1949 until 1998.

He is probably best remembered for his role as Felix Unger in 'The Odd Couple' in 1968.
3. Talk about 'fringe' benefits; Brad Pitt might have got an eyeful in this job

Answer: Driver for strippers

This pre-acting work is well documented with Pitt having mentioned it on various chat shows. His role was to drive girls to their bookings, often at private parties, look after the music they needed to perform to and catch the items the girls removed to prevent them being taken as souvenirs. Pitt credits this job with giving him his entry into acting when one of the girls gave him the name of Roy London, who became his acting coach.

He obtained his first roles in 1987, mostly bit parts such as waiters or unnamed characters, but broke through with 'Thelma and Louise' in 1991.

His other films include 'Seven' (1995), 'Ocean's Eleven' (2001) and '12 Years a Slave' (2013).
4. Jeremy Irons gave up this noble career helping others for the glitter of Hollywood

Answer: Social work

In interviews, Irons has said that he wanted to become a veterinary surgeon but had no aptitude for science. He then starting training as a social worker in London, but was told he was becoming too involved with the clients which he felt was what he should be doing.

He also did some busking while training and discovered that he enjoyed performing, moving to Bristol to attend the Old Vic Theatre School. Jeremy's career took off with 'The French Lieutenant's Woman' (1981), 'Reversal of Fortune' (1990) and 'Assassin's Creed' (2016) being just three of the films he has graced.
5. James Caan enjoyed learning the ropes before he decided to put up with all of the 'bull' found in Hollywood

Answer: Rodeo rider

In fairness, this appears to be not just something Caan did before becoming famous but during his career as well. He has been quoted as saying it's not rodeo that's his hobby - that's acting but roping calves doesn't pay as much. According to a 1989 article in the Los Angeles Times he disappeared during the shooting of 'Funny Lady' in 1975 to take part in a rodeo. Surprisingly, he wasn't born in Texas but in the Bronx. Caan's film career began in 1963 with an uncredited role in 'Irma la Douce' but he was certainly better known by the time he played Sonny Corleone in 'The Godfather' in 1972 and its 1974 sequel.
6. Jerry Lewis had a 'front of house' role before heading for stardom

Answer: Theatre usher

Lewis came from a show business family, and had begun his own act at the age of twelve. By the time he was fifteen, he had already tried to earn his living as a comedian but had to take on other work including as a soda jerk and being an usher in various theatres to earn enough money.

His fortunes changed dramatically when he met Dean Martin, teaming up with him as a duo in 1946 when Lewis was still only twenty. The pair improvised a lot of their performances which included Lewis being the comedian while Martin was the straight man and singer.

After they split up, acrimoniously by all accounts, in 1956 Lewis began performing solo on stage and in films, with 'The Bellboy' (1960) among his best known, reflecting parts of his own early life.
7. Charles Bronson's life was the pits as he got down and dirty before stardom beckoned

Answer: Coal miner

Although the question is written in an amusing manner, Bronson's life as a miner was far from a joke. He was still a boy when his father died and working in a coal mine in Pennsylvania was hard, cruel and poorly paid work. Bronson's life changed for the better when he enlisted to fight in WWII in 1943.

He took acting classes after the war, landing various small roles and progressing to the stage of being a regular support actor. In 1960, he was one of 'The Magnificent Seven', then appeared in 'The Great Escape' (1963).

His later work was dominated by the 'Death Wish' series, when he appeared in four sequels to the original 1974 film. Bronson died in 2003.
8. Warren Beatty heard a lot of squealing even before he became a leading man

Answer: Rodent exterminator

According to my research, Beatty's work was as a stage doorman at a theatre, but he was also used as a general handyman which included laying traps to catch mice and rats, so this has some truth to it. He learned his acting skills at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting in New York City before landing his first roles in 1957 in various television shows. Warren's big screen breakthrough came with 'Splendor in the Grass' in 1961, directed by Elia Kazan and also starring Natalie Wood.

In 1967 he portrayed Clyde Barrow in 'Bonnie and Clyde', turning to directing as well with 'Reds' in 1981.
9. Julia Roberts was well used to scoops even before hitting the big time

Answer: Ice cream parlour

Among Julia's pre-stardom jobs was one working for Baskin-Robbins, well known for its chain of ice cream outlets. Working in the fast food business might have helped Julia with one of her early roles when she played a waitress in 'Mystic Pizza' in 1988. From then on, serving ice cream was well in her past, with roles in 'Steel Magnolias' (1989), 'Pretty Woman' (1990) and 'August: Osage County' (2013), just three of the films in which she starred.
10. Lee Marvin might have been flushed with embarrassment about his early work. Plunge in and work it out

Answer: Plumber

Marvin served in the armed forces during World War II. He was working as an assistant plumber in a theatre when he was enlisted to stand in during a rehearsal to replace an actor who was unwell. This gave him the inspiration to become an actor himself and he enrolled at the American Theatre Wing. Marvin's first roles were on stage and television, including on Broadway. By 1951 he had been cast in film roles, with 'You're in the Navy Now' his first part, although uncredited.

His filmography shows him working regularly from then on, with 'Cat Ballou' (1965) and 'The Dirty Dozen' (1967) among the films listed.

He even displayed his vocal talents in 'Paint Your Wagon' in 1969.
