Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Hershey Park first opened in 1905 in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Who was the original intended audience of this area?

Answer: Employees of the chocolate factory

Milton Hershey bought land in Pennsylvania in 1903 and soon began constructing a chocolate factory. Quickly, a factory town sprung up as employees were hired to work at the company. In 1905, Milton decided to utilize some of his land for a small park where the employees could go and relax from a rigorous work day.

It was named Hershey Park. People immediately utilized it and a pavilion was built and walkways put down before a grand opening in 1906. Over the years, more and more additions came to the park before it became a large theme park in the 1970s and its name changed to one word instead of two.
2. In 1923, Milton Hershey added the first roller coaster to the park. What was the name of this wooden coaster that operated through the 1945 season?

Answer: Wild Cat

The Wild Cat was a joint venture between Milton Hershey and the Philadelphia Toboggan Company (PTC). Hershey leased the land to PTC and they operated the wooden roller coaster. It was constructed in honor of the town of Hershey and its 20 year anniversary.

The ride was very popular with hills and the coaster going through a tunnel. It operated through 1945 when it was torn down and its wood donated to the United States' war effort. In 1996 a new coaster was added called Wildcat (one word) in honor of this original one.

In the 1970s the zoo was totally renovated and became better known as ZooAmerica. It offers visitors offer 200 animals in such ecosystems as a swamp, a desert, some woodlands, the tundra, and big sky country. The zoo is also heavily involved in conservation and education programs.

The carousel was built in 1919 and was in parks in Maryland and New York before coming to Hershey in 1945. The hand carved wooden horses are in four rows. There are 42 jumping horses (that move up and down) and 24 stationary horses. All of them, except the center horse, have open mouths.

The horses come in different colors and there is one painted brown and gold in honor of Milton Hershey School. A Wurlitzer Military Band Organ continues to provide music to the delight of children and adults alike.
5. The "superdooperLooper" was the first looping roller coaster on the East Coast and only the second in the whole United States when it was installed in 1977 in Hersheypark.

Answer: True

The superdooperLooper was added to Hersheypark in 1977 at a cost of $3 million, making it the most expensive one for the park up to that time. The first looping roller coaster in America had opened the year before in California and this was the first one east of the Mississippi River.

The train raced into a 57 foot high loop and carried the passengers upside down. "I survived the superdooperLooper" has been a top selling tee shirt at the park ever since.
6. The 1970s brought characters to Hersheypark and they've been there since. The characters spend time in various parts of the park and are glad to have photo opportunities with visitors. They also will appear for special shows or meals. As what do the characters appear?

Answer: Types of candy

In 1977 Hersheypark introduced a handful of characters to the park based on the candies made by the Hershey company. In the 2020s, there were over a dozen characters. Each character has a different personality and a place in the park that he or she hangs out.

Some examples are Hershey Bar who loves making friends, Jolly Ranger who enjoys adventures, and Twizzler who likes to be the life of the party.
7. In 1961 the Dry Gulch Railroad, with propane fired steam engines, opened in the park. The two locomotives have names. One is "Janelle". Who is the other?

Answer: Scooter

The steam train ride goes on a loop through the center of the park where it passes rides and goes over a trestle. It started in 1961 with a steam engine named "Meridia" that was made for Hershey. In 1984, "Scooter" replaced "Meridia" and then "Janelle" arrived in 1990. While this 24 gauge railroad runs in the park, a monorail runs OVER the park as well.
8. Even back in the 1920s, Milton Hershey made sure that water was part of the park when he had some pools and a bathhouse installed. In 2007, a whole water park was added to Hersheypark. What is the name of this area?
