Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Swedish

Answer: Piff och Puff

Translating Chip and Dale to Swedish would give us Piff och Puff. In Sweden, national icons have been made out of its Disney animated characters from its shorts (which as indicated by the name, is a film that isn't as long as a feature film). This includes not just Chip and Dale but also characters like Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and Pluto.

The English names of Chip and Dale are a reference to a British cabinet maker named Thomas Chippendale. Several translations of Chip and Dale are not direct translations, since there would be no need to, because the reference to Thomas Chippendale would be lost in whatever translation would be used.
2. Dutch

Answer: Knabbel en Babbel

Knabbel en Babbel literally translates to Nibble and Chat in English, although those are the Dutch names for Chip and Dale.

Chip and Dale were first introduced as unnamed chipmunks in the Disney short "Private Pluto". Depending on the short, they would antagonize such characters as Pluto, Donald Duck (the most frequent target of their mischief), and Mickey Mouse. They would eventually star in their own show "Chip 'n' Dale: Rescuer Rangers" where they would be heroic detectives rather than mischievous creatures.
3. Portuguese

Answer: Tico e Teco

Tico e Teco is an indirect translation of Chip and Dale into Portuguese. It can also be used as a jab against people who aren't that smart and thus don't appear to have many brain cells. This is a somewhat appropriate description of Chip and especially Dale.

The 1951 short "Chicken in the Rough" is the first time that Chip and Dale have a main role as opposed to supporting role. In this short, Dale is mistaken for a chick and therefore must impersonate a chick in order not to upset the rooster.
4. Russian

Answer: Chip I Dail

If you want to say Chip and Dale in Russian, it would be Chip I Dail.

One of the characters in "Chip 'n' Dale: Rescue Rangers" is Gadget Hackwrench, who in Russian has the name Gaika. In Russia, there are some fans that view her as the prototype of a perfect woman and is popular due to (among other things) her willpower and eagerness. This is true, so much so that she has developed a following that has even turned into a religion called Gadgetology, similar to how the Jedi from the "Star Wars" universe have become a religion.
5. Norwegian

Answer: Snipp og Snapp

If someone were to say "Snipp og Snapp", then that would be the Norwegian translation for Chip and Dale.

Regardless of the country they are shown in, Chip and Dale have the same physical design. This is because the characters are owned by Disney. Likewise, most of the animation is done by the same studio, but even when the animation is done by some other company, the characters still appear the same.
Chip and Dale started out physically identical, but Chip would get a black nose and Dale would gain a red nose. Chip would also have two front teeth while Dale would have a gap between his teeth.
6. Italian

Answer: Cip e Ciop

The Italian version of Chip and Dale are called Cip e Ciop.

Since their debut in 1943, there has never been a clear answer on the relationship between Chip and Dale. Are they brothers? Maybe even twins? Are they friends? Something else?

They can be visited in Disney World parks around the world. The clothing they wear, on the other hand, differs. Sometimes, they wear nothing similar to how they appeared early on in their career. Other times, they are seen in their outfits from "Chip 'n' Dale: Rescue Rangers".
7. French

Answer: Tic et Tac

Tic et Tac is the translation for Chip and Dale in French. Their names translate to tick and tock.

Originally, Chip and Dale would behave like chipmunks but over time they became more anthropomorphic, thereby gaining more human characteristics, such as wearing clothes, an interest in music, and having human jobs. The first time this happened was the 1951 short "Two Chips and a Miss", but it was not popularized until "Chip 'n' Dale: Rescue Rangers" over three decades later.
8. Greek

Answer: Tsip and Nteil

Translating Chip and Dale from English to Greek would be Tsip and Nteil.

Bill Justice is the artist who drew Chip and Dale and is usually credited with being their creator. Bill "Tex" Henson, on the other hand, is the one credited with giving them their names.
They were originally not named until the third short, titled "Chip an' Dale", which is their original collective name; shortly after, it would be changed to the more well-known Chip 'n' Dale.
9. Finnish

Answer: Tiku ja Taku

Tiku ja Taku is the Finnish translation of Chip and Dale. The Mammalian Nomenclature Committee, a scientific committee, was responsible for giving names to mammals that had no Finnish translation, and it was decided chipmunk would be tikutaku. Since Chip and Dale are both chipmunks, it was decided to name Chip Tiku and Dale Taku.
10. German

Answer: Chip und Chap

In early appearances in Germany, Chip and Dale were called Ahornchen und Behornchen. In German entertainment, many translations are drastically changed from the original as opposed to a direct or a loose translation.

Over time, their names would later change to Chip and Chap to make the names sound more similar. This is in line with how other countries translate Chip and Dale.
