Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Linda Baron played the part of Nurse Gladys Emanuel in which sitcom?

Answer: Open All Hours

Linda Baron was born in 1942. Nurse Gladys Emanuel was an attractive, buxom district nurse who was unofficially engaged to the tight-fisted grocer, Arkwright. "Open All Hours" aired from 1976 to 1985. More recently Ms Baron has appeared in "Eastenders" and "Doctors". She has appeared consistently on stage and screen since her 1963 debut in the film "Hide and Seek".

All the choices listed starred the late Ronnie Barker.
2. Which stalwart of the "Carry On" series of films had a role as Nurse Rigor Mortis in the 1954 film "Doctor in the House"?

Answer: Joan Sims

"Doctor in the House" was loosely based on a book by Richard Gordon. It helped Dirk Bogarde become a household name. The film was hugely successful and a further six "Doctor" films followed, as well as several TV series. It was produced by Betty Box, who was married to Peter Rogers, director of the "Carry On" series of films. Joan was cast in the role of Student Nurse Stella Dawson in "Carry on Nurse", which was released in 1959.
3. In the sitcom "Men Behaving Badly", Gary's girlfriend Dorothy was a nurse. Who played the role of Dorothy?

Answer: Caroline Quentin

"Men Behaving Badly" ran from 1992 to 1998. ITV ran the first two series, but viewing figures were poor. The series passed over to the BBC, who aired it in a later time slot, which allowed a lot more bad behaviour and viewing figures improved considerably. It came 16th in the BBC's poll of "Britain's Best Sitcom" in 2004.

Dorothy was yet another buxom nurse, who didn't suffer fools gladly. Quite why she stayed with Gary is anyone's guess. Lesley Ash played Deborah, Dorothy's flatmate. Jo Brand is a comedienne and used to work as a psychiatric nurse.
4. The star of the BBC drama series "The District Nurse" also starred in which long-running sitcom?

Answer: The Liver Birds

Nerys Hughes played Sandra in "The Liver Birds", which aired from 1969 until 1978. Pauline Collins co-starred with Polly James in the pilot show and the first series, but Nerys took over from the second and subsequent series.

"The District Nurse" was a BBC Wales production and aired from 1984-1987. Nerys starred as Megan Roberts, a District Nurse working in a deprived South Wales town in the 1920s.

"Butterflies" aired from 1978-1983, "Bread" from 1986-1991 and "The Mistress" from 1985-1987. Along with "The Liver Birds", all were written by Carla Lane.
5. Miranda Richardson made an appearance as Nurse Mary in which comedy series?

Answer: Blackadder

Nurse Mary appeared in the episode "General Hospital". Miranda Richardson also appeared as Queenie (Queen Elizabeth I) in "Blackadder II, and as Amy Hardwood in the episode "Amy and Amiability" from "Blackadder the Third". The four "Blackadder" series ran from 1983 to 1989.

Ms Richardson has played four different roles where she is associated with beheading. As well as "Queenie", she played The Queen of Hearts in a 1999 production of Alice in Wonderland, Lady Van Tassel in "Sleepy Hollow" (1999) and she voiced the part of Mrs Tweedy in "Chicken Run" (2000).
6. Who played the role of a nurse who hastened the death of her elderly patients in the 1993 television drama "Tender Loving Care"?

Answer: Dawn French

Despite all the choices listed being better known for their comedy roles, there was nothing funny about this play. Joan Sims and Rosemary Leach also starred. The play was written by Lucy Gannon, who also wrote the TV series "Soldier, Soldier". "Tender Loving Care" won the 1995 Bafta Cymru award for Best Drama.
7. Let's not forget the male nurses. Ross Davidson played nurse Andy O'Brien in which UK soap?

Answer: Eastenders

"Eastenders" first aired in 1985. It is set in the fictional London borough of Walford and centres around Albert Square. Ross was one of the original cast. His character was killed off in a hit and run accident after eighteen months, becoming the first main character to be killed off in the series. Judging by the amount of road traffic accidents that happen in Albert Square, it must have the most lethal roads in the UK! Sadly, Ross died from a brain tumor in October 2006 at the age of 57.
8. Which character from a comedy series had her baby delivered by a male midwife?

Answer: Raquel (Only Fools and Horses)

In an episode which first aired on 3rd February 1991, Ken Drury played the part of "Dr" McCallum, the midwife on duty when Raquel went into labour. Raquel's labour scene was unusually realistic, in that it took several hours, she didn't crack witty remarks throughout and she actually broke into a sweat. Most TV babies arrive in about ten minutes flat! Only Fools and Horses first aired in 1981.

Alice gave birth to her first baby during the nativity play. Carol gave birth to twins (delivered by a vet) in the leisure centre and if I remember correctly, Dorothy managed on her own after partner Gary had inadvertently knocked the midwife unconscious.
9. Wendy Craig plays the part of the Matron in which TV series?

Answer: The Royal

"The Royal", which first aired in 2003 is a spin off from the TV show "Heartbeat", which first aired in 1992. Set in the 1960s, the "Royal" in question is the fictional "St Aiden's Royal Free Hospital". Matron's real name has never been mentioned in the series, although it has been mentioned that her nickname when she worked as a nurse during World War II was "Toffee".

Wendy Craig played the title role in "Nanny", a BBC drama which first aired in 1981. Prior to that she was mainly known for being the "mum" in various comedy series, such as "Not in Front of the Children" (1967-1970) and "Butterflies" (1978-1983)
10. A quiz about nurses in UK films with no questions devoted to the "Carry On" series? Unthinkable! In which of the films did the nurses carry out their revenge on a difficult patient by taking his temperature with a daffodil?

Answer: Carry On Nurse

"Carry on Nurse" was released in 1959 and was the second film in the "Carry On" series. The infamous daffodil scene was extremely racy for the fifties. American cinemas handed out plastic daffodils to audiences when the film was shown.
