Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who swings across the sky on the Aurora's davit, in order to retrieve the Endurance before it goes down?

Answer: Matt

At first the crew of the Aurora - on Rideau's orders - try to use grappling hooks to snag the Endurance from the sky and save themselves some trouble, but it's not possible because the balloon is sinking. Captain Walken decides that someone (Matt, of course!) will need to swing between the aircrafts and hook the davit to the Endurance.
2. While Matt is showing Kate and Miss Simpkins to their stateroom, Miss Simpkins's high-heeled shoes keep getting caught in which of the following?

Answer: The floor grilles

Because of this, Miss Simpkins "jerked and lurched and sighed and snorted all the way." Kate, however, was wearing practical, flat-soled shoes, and had no trouble walking.
3. Captain Walken was planning on appointing Matt as the new junior sailmaker aboard the Aurora. Why did Bruce Lunardi get the position instead?

Answer: All of these

Matt was counting on becoming junior sailmaker, but Otto Lunardi dashed all his hopes when he decided his son Bruce should have the position instead.
4. If any passengers were interested in a tour of the ship, where were they supposed to meet?

Answer: At the grand piano in the starboard lounge

Kate is the only person who shows up for the tour, but she's very interested in everything about the Aurora.
5. Before he could see them properly, Benjamin Molloy thought that the cloud cats were a flock of what?

Answer: Albatrosses

He thinks it's strange that there's such a big flock of albatrosses, and also that they appear to have no dark plumage and are only a misty white. As he gets closer to them, he realizes that they are, indeed, "not birds."
6. Kate wrote a letter to the Zoological Society explaining what her grandfather saw. The reply was signed by what name?

Answer: Sir Hugh Snuffler

Sir Snuffer was very kindly and patient with Kate's letter, and he thought he should remind her that her grandfather was not scientifically trained, and in his state of health he may have imagined the creatures. He also advised Kate to turn her interests to more comfortable young ladies' pursuits. Both these things, of course, made Kate furious.
7. One of the reasons Matt didn't see Szpirglas's pirate ship approaching was that she was painted black. True or false?

Answer: True

Also, the pirate ship had no running beacons anywhere, there were no lights in the control car, and at the moment Matt was busy chasing an albatross off the top of the Aurora.
8. What causes the Aurora to sink?

Answer: The pirate ship's propellers cut her open

As Szpirglas and his men are departing, a tropical storm suddenly whips up and spins the small pirate ship around, plowing its propellers into the Aurora and slicing through the fabric and gas cells.
9. Does Matt know how to swim?

Answer: No

Once the Aurora starts to go down, Matt helps the passengers with getting on their lifejackets. One woman says fearfully that she doesn't know how to swim, but Matt assures her that she won't need to. Then Matt looks out the window at the churning sea and thinks that he, too, doesn't know how to swim. And he hopes that what he told the woman was right.
10. On the island where the Aurora lands, Matt and Kate find the bones of a cloud cat inside a tree. How much of the skeleton is actually there?

Answer: The whole thing

While exploring in the forest, Matt and Kate come across a little red snake, which jumps up and scares them. Unsure if it's poisonous or not, the two companions run (with the snake following them the whole way) until they reach a tree, where they're safe. Inside that tree happens to be the entire skeleton of a cloud cat - a huge scientific breakthrough for Kate. Later on, they find out that the little red snake was completely harmless.
