Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Besides yourself, the basic need of beginning skaters is a good pair of skates. How should your skates (especially rentals) fit your foot?

Answer: At least one size smaller than shoe size, with toe to the end of skate

If renting, ask how often the skates are sharpened. Dull blades are a wonderful reason for falling down too much, so ask for another pair if this is the case. Skating on dull blades is like skating on butter knives!
2. How should your skates be laced?

Answer: Tighter at the toe, looser at ankles, snug at top

There is nothing more miserable than skating on your insoles, because your boots aren't laced properly. Take time to relace if needed.
3. Once you get on the ice, if you fall, what should you should try to fall on?

Answer: Your buttocks

Bend, relax, and slide into a fall and you won't hurt yourself. Avoid hitting hard with your hands as much as possible.
4. Before you go too fast, learn how to stop. The easiest stop is the snowplow, in which you push your heels _____?

Answer: Out to the sides and away from each other

The snowplow stop is the easiest one to begin with. Practice this idea before you skate! When you advance to the t-stop you'll feel like an Olympic champion.
5. Stroking: when you push off on an inside edge (the inside of your blade), remember to bend your what?

Answer: your knees

Every stroke is a bending of the knee. Good skaters skate close to the ice.
6. How should your head be held when you skate forwards?

Answer: level and looking ahead

The weight of your head is very important to your balance. If you look down at your feet you will topple forwards.
7. How many edges does a skater need to learn?

Answer: 4

In order to go from front to back (or back to front) on one skate, you have to be able to skate on an edge. Remember, you have two feet so there's left and right edges too!
8. As a beginner, should you skate in the middle of the rink?

Answer: No

The middle of the rink is usually reserved during a public session for skaters who are doing jumps, spins and moves in the field.
9. What is the best way to improve your skating?

Answer: take lessons

A coach will work with you at any age. Your committment alone to taking a lesson will make you a better skater.
10. How many calories an hour does the average person burn while ice skating?

Answer: 350
