5. The next stop on my journey is in what is called Central America. This country has a famous canal that joins the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. There is also a hat named after this country - where do you think I am going?

Answer: Panama

The Panama canal is a 77 km (48 mile) ship canal which was built between the years 1904 and 1914. One of the most difficult engineering projects ever undertaken, the canal made a tremendous difference to shipping between the two oceans. For example a ship sailing from New York on the east coast of USA to San Francisco on the west coast travels 9,500 km (5,900 miles) via the canal which is well under half the 22,500 km (14,000 mile) route around the tip of South America.
