Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of Flora and Fiona's sister?

Answer: Shiena

Shiena had been mother to the twins from the time of their mother's death. She travelled south with the twins to Jo Maynard's home and then went off to join the WRNS. They had three brothers - Archie, Hugh and Kenneth.
2. Which form were the Highland Twins placed in on their arrival at the Chalet School?

Answer: Upper second

The twins were a little older than the others in this form, but were happy to be in the same class as their friends Julie Lucy and Vanna and Nella Ozanne.
3. Whose finger did Fiona accidentally trap in the deckchair she was trying to fold up?

Answer: Betty Wynne-Davies

Betty took a dislike to the twins following this incident. She later boxed Fiona's ears for cheeking her. Her dislike of the twins led her to make strenuous efforts to get back at them by discovering the whereabouts of the Chart of Erisay. The Chart was a map of the twins' home, showing a secret passage into their house, and was valuable as the Ministry of Defense were to take over their house.

A spy could use the map to gain access to the house and steal secrets kept there.
4. What career did Daisy Venables plan to follow?

Answer: Doctor

Daisy wanted to become a doctor. Her great friend Beth Chester hoped to become a gardener and their other chum, Gwensi Howell, wanted to be an author.
5. Why did Emmie and Joanna Linders leave Germany?

Answer: Someone warned their uncle that he was in danger

Emmie and Joanna had attended the Chalet School when it had been in Austria, and did their best to keep to the school's ideas and beliefs even though they lived in Nazi Germany. They fled from Germany with their aunt and uncle and had many adventures as they tried to reach safety.
6. Who was Mrs. Helston?

Answer: The Crown Princess of Belsornia

Elisaveta had attended the Chalet School and was a great friend of Jo Maynard's. She had married the Duc di Mirolani, whose family had the name Helston. When she fled from occupied Europe, she took his name and came to stay with Jo. The twins were thrilled to meet her.
7. Why did Simone de Bersac return to teach at the Chalet School?

Answer: Miss Slater had broken her leg

Simone was one of Jo's oldest friends. She had come to stay while her husband was moved to a defense area, to which she could not go. She was happy to return to her old job when Miss Slater broke her leg in a bicycle accident.
8. Fiona had the gift of 'second sight'. Which of the following things did she NOT see?

Answer: Flora fall downstairs and break her arm

Fiona had 'seen' many things, but her family did not encourage her to use this gift she had. Flora and Fiona heard of Jack Maynard's apparent death and knew how upset Jo was. They wanted to borrow something of his so that Fiona could try to 'see' if he was alive.
9. Who was expelled from the school at the end of the story?

Answer: Betty Wynne-Davies

Betty had always been a difficult pupil, but her attempts to help an enemy agent steal the Chart of Erisay led to her expulsion. She was the second girl to be expelled from the school. The first was Thekla, who had been expelled several years earlier.
10. Jack Maynard returned unhurt at the end of the story.

Answer: False

Jo had received a telegram saying that Jack was missing and had grieved for him until Flora 'saw' that he was alive. He had banged his head as his ship sank, but had been rescued. He had been ill for a long time before getting home, and faced many more weeks of convalescence, but would be well in time. Needless to say, Jo was thrilled when he returned home in time to watch the school's Christmas play.
