Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where does the prince find himself at the beginning of the story?

Answer: In a pile of clothing

Instinctively, most amphibians will hide when threatened. The prince found himself in an unusual situation. He didn't realize he was a frog, therefore he sat unmoving while the Hag approached.
2. How does the small female frog help the frog prince?

Answer: She tells him to hop under cover.

In this story, the little female frog helps the frog prince. Without her help, he would never have survived the first few weeks of life as a frog. In fact, he would most likely have become froggy stew for the Hag.
3. Why does the frog prince have a problem with his tongue falling out?

Answer: His new tongue is very different from a human tongue.

Frogs have a long, thin tongue which is connected at the front of their mouth and is held in a rolled-up position while not in use. The frog prince, having been a human, was unused to this adaptation. His new tongue also caused speech difficulties. In the first chapter, he introduces himself as a Pin, which was how he pronounced the word prince.
4. How does Pin, the frog prince, handle the water snake?

Answer: He jumps on his head.

Amphibians have instincts which allow them to normally avoid one of their primary predators: reptiles. Pin acts out of love for his friend and attacks the water snake in order to defend the small female frog.
5. In this story, the frog prince names the small female frog Jade. Where does Pin take Jade to lay her eggs?

Answer: In the well near the castle

Frogs live in calm, still water. Rivers often have strong currents which make poor habitats for amphibians and poor conditions for frog eggs to hatch. Pin also chose the well in order to avoid predators such as water scorpions, snakes, and the horrible Hag.
6. How did the hag lose her nose?

Answer: She rips it off in her attempt to remove Pin.

Pin had bravely leaped onto the Hag's nose in order to divert her attention away from Jade and the bucket where Jimmy was held captive. He was holding on so tightly, she had much difficulty removing him. Finally, with one mighty tug, she ripped both Pin and her nose off.
7. What makes Pin accept his fate and begin making an effort to survive?

Answer: The small female frog convinces him she would miss him if he died.

In this book, Donna Jo Napoli has given amphibians human qualities. This is a type of figurative language called personification. Giving the frogs in this story feelings such as love, loyalty, and grief enhances the story and allows readers to connect with Napoli's colorful characters.
8. Who is Jimmy?

Answer: Pin's son

Pin loved his son, Jimmy, very much. He wasn't used to "froggy" ways of leaving the eggs and letting the tadpoles fend for themselves. He decided to take all but fifty of the tadpoles back to the large pond to live. The others remained in the well throughout their complete metamorphosis so Pin could watch over them and feed them. Because Pin could not pronounce the word frog, the fifty tadpoles believed they were fawgs when they grew up.
9. How does the Hag outwit Jade and Pin near the end of the story?

Answer: She hides in a Willow tree.

The Hag hid in the overhanging branches of a Willow tree and jumped out onto the muddy bank at the last moment. She managed to grab Jade with such a tight grip, Jade was temporarily unable to move after being tossed aside. Fortunately for her, the Hag was more interested in "the big guy".
10. What happens to the frog prince at the end of the story?

Answer: He is turned back into a prince when the princess kisses him.

A classic fairytale ending. The princess makes a wish, kisses the frog, and the Hag's magic is undone.
