Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "He's the man with the banjo and the 12-string guitar And he's singing us the songs to tell us who were are When you like at his eyes You know that somebody's in there..." About which of these singers called Pete or Peter did Harry Chapin write the song "Old Folkie."?

Answer: Pete Seeger

"Still, what is the name that they're calling that man?
What is the name that they're calling that man?
You know, it's always the "Old Folkie"
They say he's always bleedin'
But whenever somebody's needing him,
He's the one who cares..."
Pete Seeger's position as an icon of folk music remains assured. Born into a fairly well-off family, Seeger turned his back on a "normal' middle class life to take to the road picking up and singing traditional songs from throughout his native America. He was involved with workers' rights, civil rights and espoused the environmental cause long before it was popular. Some of the songs he wrote or developed have entered mainstream consciousness; songs like "We Shall Overcome"; "If I Had a Hammer" and "Where Have All The Flowers Gone?"
2. You're only supposed to blow the doors off: If you were a peterman, what kind of criminal activity would you engage in?

Answer: Safe blowing

Peterman is British slang for a criminal who uses explosives to blow open safes. The first sentence in the question is borrowed from one of the most famous lines in the original "Italian Job" movie (1969). The scene showed a crook totally destroying a van with explosives instead of using just a small amount to open the doors.

It prompted the famous line from Michael Caine, who played the gang leader, Charlie Croker.
3. On which island did Peter Pan spend his young life?

Answer: Neverland

Peter Pan was the boy who never grew up. The character was first written about by the Scottish author J.M. Barrie in the 1902 novel "The Little White Bird". Over the years the character has been the subject of plays, movies and stage musicals.
4. Oh for Pete's sake: My friend Pete likes a glass or two of sake after his evening meal. From which grain is sake made?

The university had a strong sporting tradition and competed in sports as diverse as (American) football, baseball, basketball, (women's) soccer, swimming, tennis and athletics.
8. When my friend Pete was studying for his MBA, he was amused to learn that there was a business concept known as "The Peter Principle". What is this theory?

Answer: Every employee rises to his level of incompetence

In their book "The Peter Principle" in 1969, Dr. Laurence J. Peter and Raymond Hull declared: "In a hierarchy every employee tends to rise to his level of incompetence." In a nutshell, that means that as long as people are competent they will earn promotion, but eventually comes a stage where they have reached a level in which they are too incompetent for further promotion.

He preferred a close-up view of the proceedings and his sleek, black form could often be seen prowling on the field of play when the crowds were biggest." His was the first animal obituary ever to appear in Wisden.
