Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A high-end shoe designer, born in the Canary Islands, has made the stiletto heel his mainstay since beginning his business in London. What is the brand name of his shoes?

Answer: Manolo Blahnik

Blahnik was born in 1942 as Miguel Blahnik Rodriguez. In 1972 he was told by Diana Vreeland, editor of Vogue, that he should design his own brand of shoes. Thus, with a loan he bought the boutique at which he was working and started his own business with his own designed shoes. He now has shops all over the world, as well as the flagship shop in London where he lives.
2. One of the best known songs about shoes must be "Blue Suede Shoes" sung by Elvis Presley. Who wrote the song?

Answer: Carl Perkins

Carl Perkins, a long time country artist, and Johnny Cash were together one day when they heard someone say, "Hey, don't step on my blue suede shoes". Cash told Perkins he thought that would make a good name for a song. Soon Perkins woke up one morning with the lyrics in his head.

Although he had planned to record the song first, he had an automobile accident and couldn't do so. Presley needed a song to follow "Heartbreak Hotel" and took "Blue Suede Shoes", which went right to the top of the charts.
3. On Epicurious.com I read a recipe for "Pommes Pailles". Can you tell me what these are that sound so good, particularly with a nice steak?

Answer: Shoe String Potatoes

The difference between regular french fries (pommes frites) and these is that the shoe string potatoes are much thinner, no more than one-eighth inch thick. Because of that, they only need to be deep fried once, rather than the preferable twice for french fries.
4. In this book, a husband and wife, with their three children, leave war-ravaged London for Southern California to allow the husband to recuperate from a accident in the sunny, warm weather. The middle child in the family is not as talented as are the other two but she does get a chance to appear in a movie. What is the name of this book written by Noel Steatfeild?

Answer: Movie Shoes

Not only are her two siblings far more talented than is she, they are both more attractive, too. This puts Jane in a position of extreme lack of confidence. She is hoping that having this part in the movie, "The Secret Garden", will allow her to be the "famous" one of the three children, at least for awhile.

Unfortunately, not everything always goes the way one wants it. To learn more, you'll have to read the book!
5. Every time I think of the little boy of who put his finger in the dike, I think of the Dutch wooden shoe, sometimes called a "clog" in English. What was it called in Dutch?

Answer: Klomp

Although the Dutch no longer use the shoe for daily wear, it is still favored by farmers and gardeners. The traditionally all-wooden Dutch clogs have been accredited as being safety shoes. They can be purchased painted or unpainted, with the painted ones usually having a design on the top in red.
6. Charlie, a young man has to take over the family's failing shoe business with the death of his father. He has a chance encounter with a drag queen, Lola, who complains about the lack of proper footwear for her work as a cabaret singer. Charlie decides he should try to fill that void, with Lola as the designer. What is the name of this rather unusual movie?

Answer: Kinky Boots

"Kinky Boots" goes on to show how the various people, Charlie, himself, his fiance who wants him to sell the factory, his employees who want their jobs, and the townspeople who don't know about the "unfamiliar" people like Lola, react to the premise of making "fetish boots". Charlie also feels he has to show the boots at the Milan show during the fashion season to the drag queen market.

However, he doesn't have the money to do that. To find out how it all goes down, you'll have to see the movie. I've given enough spoilers!
7. There is a song written by George Harrison that was released by the Beatles as the B-side to "The Ballad of John and Yoko". It can also be found on their albums "Hey Jude, 1967-1970" and "Past Masters, Volume Two". What is it called?

Answer: Old Brown Shoe

George Harrison was the lead vocal, with both Paul McCartney and John Lennon as backup on "Old Brown Shoe" which was played in A/C duality. It has somewhat of a dissonant, bluesy, effect.
8. A well-known company custom made a pair of cowboy boots for President Harry Truman. What was the name of the company, which features a misspelled animal in it?

Answer: Tony Lama

The boots were very colorful on a black background, and were named "El Presidente". They were given to the President in April, 1948. Tony Lama started as a small shoe-repair shop in El Paso, Texas, in 1912 and by 1933 with his new boot factory he was turning out 40 pair of boots a day. Beginning with President Truman, the Tony Lama company "began a custom of offering a pair of custom boots to each President, according to Wiki.

The company is now owned by Berkshire Hathaway.
9. This is a French fairy tale wherein the penniless master is helped to gain power, wealth and the hand of a princess in marriage. In French it is known as "Le Maître Chat, ou Le Chat Botté". What is it known as in English?

Answer: Puss in Boots

The cat is all the young man gets as his inheritance when his father dies and he's very disappointed since his brothers got the mill and the mules. However, this is an extra special cat. For months he catches and takes game to the king, saying it's a gift from his master, the Marquis.

When he knows the King and his daughter will be coming along the road he talks his master into going swimming and then hides his clothes. Puss then runs to the King's carriage asking for help, telling the King that his master, the Marquis, had been bathing and his clothes were stolen.

The King, of course, clothes the man and the daughter falls in love with him instantly. After Puss has tricked and eaten the Ogre who owns the castle, the King sees it and is so impressed with the young man and his estate he allows the willing daughter to marry him. Puss in Boots lives the life of a lord after that, and the young couple live happily ever after. That's how fairy tales should always end!
10. For the last question, please tell me what a shoe "last" is. Thank you.

Answer: A foot shaped form

The shoe "last" is a foot-shaped form, that is often attached to the top of a stand. They have been made of many different materials over the years although nowadays it is usually made of hard plastic. It must be made out a material that does not become misshapen when the wet leather is stretched and smoothed over it.

The shoemakers who make personalized shoes still usually use the wooden forms, though. The lasts come in various styles and sizes, of course, from tuxedo shoes to boots for men, as an example.
