Trudeau applied The War Measures Act after the FLQ kidnapped and later killed Pierre Laporte, a provincial liberal MP and minister, and James Richard Cross (who was released). The FLQ (Front de Liberation du Quebec) were a separatist underground movement.

Robert Bourassa was first elected as Premier in 1970 and then again in 1973. He lost the 1976 election to the Parti Quebecois and returned as premier in the late 1980s.
