Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What drink's name is Spanish for strained pineapple?

Answer: pina colada

Sometimes known as one of the "umbrella drinks" from the little umbrellas often added as an accent to the drink as presented, the cocktail is made from rum, coconut milk and pineapple juice. It is usually blended or shaken with ice (not stirred) and garnished with a maraschino cherry, a pineapple wedge or both. The drink originated in Puerto Rico.
2. What was the first fruit eaten on the moon ?

Answer: peach

Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin had two meals while their Apollo 11 lander was parked on the moon in July, 1969. Besides a peach they ate bacon squares, sugar cookie cubes, coffee and pineapple-grapefruit drinks.
3. What Orville, Ohio jam and jelly brand achieved great popularity despite its name?

Answer: Smucker's

"With a name like Smucker's, it has to be good" is an advertising slogan used by the company since 1962. As Smucker's decided to increase their market they were worried about their name. They asked the Wyse Advertising Agency of Cleveland, Ohio for help. "You've got a lousy name" said Mark Wyse but his wife, Lois, came up with the slogan which has proven immensely popular in the U.S. and made Smuckers a household name.
4. What comes in bibb and oakleaf varieties?

Answer: lettuce

Lettuce belongs to the daisy family and there may be over 100 varieties. Bibb, a loosehead-type was developed in the 1860s by John Bibb, a Kentucky lawyer. It wasn't available in large enough quantities to be sold commercially until the mid-20th century. Since then its popularity has increased as people discovered its buttery flavor. Oakleaf lettuce is another old lettuce and resembles the leaf of a white oak tree.

It is a loose-leafed lettuce that has a mild, nutty flavor.
5. Which of these ingredients would you add to confectioner's sugar to keep it from clumping?

Answer: corn starch

Sold in powder form, corn starch, or corn flour, comes from the endosperm of the corn kernel. Besides being an anti-clumping agent it is used as a thickener for sauces or soups and to make corn syrup. It also can be used for some medical therapies and has industrial uses, such as being used as a laundry starch.
6. What tubular taste treat is mixed in one-ton batches of beef, pork, chicken and thirty spices, and smoked in 7,600-foot coils?

Answer: Slim Jims

Slim Jim is a mainstay of convenience stores but cannot be called a healthy snack. They are sold worldwide and come in over 120 varieties. The snack was invented in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by Jack Comella in 1929, who made small batches of it. Large-scale production was started in the 1940s.

It has been sold to bigger and bigger companies over the years and is currently owned by Conagra Brands.
7. What's the only non-Kellogg's cereal among the top-selling cold cereals?

Answer: Cheerios

Those little toasted Os are a worldwide breakfast favorite. The product is owned by General Mills and was invented in 1941. Originally called "CheeriOats" the name was changed in 1945 following the threat of a lawsuit by the Quaker Oats Company who claimed to hold the rights to use of the term "oats". About 2.7 billion boxes of the cereal are sold every year.

The "Corn Flakes" mentioned in the answers are officially named "Kellogg's Corn Flakes" but that would have been too much of a tip-off.
8. What Irish family brewed their first ale in 1759?

Answer: The Guinness Family

Arthur Guinness started brewing ales at St. James Gate in Dublin, Ireland in 1759. Over the years he produced porters and then the dry stout for which the brewery is most noted. I should say "breweries" because Guinness has been licensed for brewing in almost 50 countries.

When Guinness started brewing he obtained a 9,000 year (yes - year) lease on the St. James Gate property for 45 pounds per year.
9. What was distilled at Montpellier, France medical school, in the early 1800s?

Answer: brandy

The University of Montpellier was founded in 1220, evolving from a medical school which started years earlier and is still in operation. In the late 18th-century some of the professors at the medical school began looking for ways to distill alcohol. In 1801 chemistry professor Jean-Edouard Adam invented a new distillation machine which would produce brandy.

The city is still noted for its production of alcoholic beverages.
10. What product, once described as "Pasteurized Process Cheese Spread", was invented in 1918?

Answer: Velveeta

Velveeta was invented by Emil Frey of the Monroe Cheese Company of Monroe, New York as a way to use broken and misshaped cheese wheels. By adding whey and other ingredients to the cheese curd it could be made into blocks. Kraft Foods purchased the rights to the product in 1927. In 2002, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration made Kraft change the description to "pasteurized prepared cheese product" because of its use of milk protein concentrate.

Cheez Whiz came about in 1952, Boursin in 1957; American cheese is a processed cheese invented by James Kraft in 1903 but not marketed as spreadable.
