Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Our first stop on our next 10-day journey is Iran. I notice one vendor selling a flatbread that I first saw when I was doing a crossword on the bus. What is the name of this palindromic bread that serves as a staple food for Iran?

Answer: Naan

Naan can be used as a soup bowl, and can be filled with meat, vegetables, and cheese. Other Iranian foods include the national dish of chelo kabab, the stew "khoresht", and a vegetable soufflé named "kookoo".
2. When our party went to western Africa, I was able to pick up some of my favorite dishes, "To go"! The country of Togo features some crazy dishes, but which of these is not usually featured in Togo?

Answer: Sheep liver

When Togonese people are not eating crazy dishes like these mentioned, they are known to eat saner foods like corn-based meals, grilled chicken, and rice.
3. Our next destination is the beautiful country of Malta. Situated in the Mediterranean Sea, Malta is home to many different types of foods from different surrounding countries. Our party is about done for lunch, so if I wanted to order a dessert, which one of these would I probably order?

Answer: Imqaret

Imqaret is a date-filled pastry that is served hot in Malta. They are usually scented with orange flour and are diamond-shaped. Many are served as street food or desserts at restaurants.

Balbuljata is a scrambled egg dish, fenek is cooked rabbit, and minestra is a thick soup. (But if I was in Malta, I would get the timpani!)
4. We now travel east in the Mediterranean as we go from Malta to Cyprus. As I drink my coffee with half-and-half, I notice that I would like to try some grilled halloumi. It looks pretty good, and it is a national food. Halloumi is a type of what?

Answer: Cheese

Halloumi was traditionally made with goat or sheep milk, but today you can get halloumi made from cow's milk. Halloumi is similar to mozzarella in color, salty flavored, and garnished with some mint. Cypriots like eating halloumi with watermelon in the summer months, and enjoy grilling halloumi over charcoal grills.

Cypriots also eat a variety of vegetables, seafood, and sampler plates known as mezes.
5. For our next country, we travel down under to Australia. One of the most iconic of Australia's food is the toast spread Vegemite. This product has been a staple for breakfast since the 1920s. Under what company is Vegemite a brand name?

Answer: Kraft Foods

Since the 1930s, Vegemite has been sold under the Kraft name. Vegemite is very popular in Australia, but surprisingly not as popular in other places. In 2008, Vegemite sold their one billionth jar.

Answer: Shark

Hákarl is said to have a taste similar to very strong cheese. The dish usually is eaten with some type of spirit. This definitely rivals with my eating of fruit bats in Palau.
8. Now, we are in the west African country of Burkina Faso. Many of the dishes used in Burkina Faso are based on what major grain crop of the country?

Answer: Sorghum

Sorghum is used in many Burkinabe foods, from tô, a type of stew, to dolo, a type of beer drunk in the country.

Answer: Fried

Falafel can also be made from fava beans. The beans are usually served in a pita, or in another type of flat bread called lafa. Other Saudi dishes include lamb, grilled chicken, and types of tea.
