Al Giordino is a close friend of Dirk Pitt, and accompanies him throughout the entire book. He has black, curly hair, and works for NUMA, along with Pitt. When he meets her, Al falls in love with a piano player. Dirk and Al get lost in the Sahara Desert, but must continue through the desert to find civilization so they can free slaves and stop Fort Foureau from their toxic waste operation.

Rudi Gunn is another partner of Dirk Pitt. He is a member of NUMA, and with Al and Dirk tries to find contamination in the Niger River. He finally gets good water samples, and when the contamination has been discovered, he must find his way back to NUMA headquarters. He carries vital information.

Admiral James Sandecker is the head of NUMA. He is the one who sent Dirk, Al, and Rudi to search for the Niger River toxin, and gave them a beautiful boat in order to do so. The boat is equipped with heavy ammo, and is incredibly fast, and silent. However, Dirk, Al, and Rudi have to destroy the boat in the river.
4. A Kill A Ham

Hala Kamil is a very beautiful woman. She has black eyes and dark hair. She is Egypt's Secretary for the United Nations. She secretly tries to help Dirk and Al, although love affairs put Dirk in great danger.

General Kazim is one of the richest men in Mali, and he will do anything to protect his vast empire. He is part of the Fort Foureau Operations and the Mines of Tebezza. He will do anything, or kill anyone, to prevent the Fort Foureau secrets from being revealed.
6. Day Mess Saver
Answer: Yves Massarde
Yves Massarde is known as "The Scorpion." He takes toxic waste from other countries and supposedly disposes of it. However, his and Kazim's plans of burying most of the waste has a slight problem - the toxins leak. The toxic waste travels through an ancient underground waterway all the way to the Niger River, and flows into the ocean, where red tides multiply quickly.
This toxic waste operation could potentially cut off the entire oxygen supply on the entire earth.
7. Curl Less Vice
Answer: Clive Cussler
Clive Cussler uses his own name in this book, but only as a minor character. While Al and Dirk travel through the Sahara Desert, they meet an old man, who was travelling the Sahara for years. He had become a travelling nomad, in search of a ship called the "Texas." He told stories about the "Texas" and why he thought it was in the Sahara. Al and Dirk thought the old man's name was quite odd.
8. Normal Chain Lab
Answer: Abraham Lincoln
Another minor character, Abraham Lincoln was found inside the "Texas." He was sitting in a rocking chair, and was very well preserved. Perlmutter described to Al and Giordino why Abe was found on the ship. His death was faked using an actor that resembled Lincoln at the theatre. Lincoln's wife was drugged up so she could not see that it was not her husband, and his face was always covered so all the witnesses could not see that it was not Lincoln.
The whole thing was to hide the fact that Lincoln was captured and carried away on the "Texas."
9. Mock Tiny Tank
Answer: Kitty Mannock
Kitty Mannock is yet another minor character, although she was a very important figure. Her plane was found by Al and Dirk in the Sahara Desert. She was found inside, very well preserved. Al and Dirk used her plane to create a land yacht to propel them through the desert. Kitty wrote a journal that Dirk kept, and it eventually helped lead Al and Dirk to the "Texas."
10. I'm A Lily Rise
Answer: Ismail Yerli
Ismael Yerli is an evil man who works with Zateb Kazim and Yves Massarde. Yerli is a very wealthy man, and has part of the share of Kazim's Fort Foureau toxic waste operation. He dies along with Kazim in a vehicle during a war in the Sahara.
