Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first to die in this novel?

Answer: Treadwell

Treadwell's body was found a few miles away from his abandoned coach but in a neighborhood he knew well. He died of one hard blow to his head from behind.
2. Where was the body of the first person to die in the novel found?

Answer: The front path to Cleo Anderson's house

The police realized that this person had crawled a long distance with a severe head injury because his hands and knees were bloodied and scraped.
3. Who was Miriam Gardiner in love with?

Answer: Lucius Stourbridge

Lucius Stourbridge was several years younger than Miriam Gardiner and very rich, but they loved each other deeply.
4. Why did Cleo steal morphine and other medicine from the hospital?

Answer: To give to the poor and dying people in her neighborhood.

As a nurse her conscience couldn't allow her to see these people suffering for want of money to buy medicines. She stole it and gave it to them, never taking any money.
5. Hester befriended an old sailor who was ill and dying. Who was this sailor's grandson?

Answer: Michael Robb

Michael Robb took good care of his grandfather. Michael was also the local police sergeant where Treadwell's body was found, and was in charge of the murder investigation.
6. Hester and Monk called on a certain person and asked him to defend the accused murderers. What was his name?

Answer: Sir Oliver Rathbone

Sir Oliver is a recurring character in the Monk series. He was in love with Hester before she married Monk. He is a successful barrister, and Hester thought the accused would only have a chance with Sir Oliver defending them. He took the case 'pro bono'.
7. Which person was the second to die in this novel?

Answer: Verona Stourbridge

Verona Stourbridge, the mother of Lucius and wife of Mr. Stourbridge, was found dead in her bedroom from a single blow to her head. A croquet mallet was found in her bedroom and was the instrument used to kill her.
8. Hester and Robb found a skeleton on Hampstead Heath. They went looking for it because Miriam said that when she was a girl, she witnessed a woman being killed on the Heath. No one believed her, so Hester and Robb set out to see if they could find the skeleton. Where was the skeleton secreted all those years?

Answer: In the trunk of a tree

It was found high up in the tree because the tree, even though it had been damaged by lightening which left a large hole in it, had continued to grow. Over the years as the tree grew taller, the hole in it was higher off the ground. The skeleton was what was left of the body of the mid-wife who had tried to help Miram escape.
9. Treadwell was a blackmailer, gambler and also thought to be a Resurrectionist, even though the last was never proved.

Answer: True

Treadwell lived too well off his wages and income from blackmailing people. It was established that he had to have another source of income. As a part time driver for an undertaker, Hester, Monk and Rathbone realized he probably didn't bother to bury the bodies, but instead sold them to the hospital for which Hester worked. Until Treadwell's death, the hospital had more cadavers for teaching new doctors than any other hospital in the area.

The cadaver source dried up when Treadwell died.
10. Who was/were the murderer(s)?

Answer: Aiden Campbell

Aiden Campbell murdered the midwife 20 years before and murdered Treadwell and his own sister Verona Stourbridge. He had raped the young Miriam when she was a servant in his house. He took the baby born as a result of this rape to give to his sister who was childless. His sister passed the child off as her husband's so that he might have an heir. Campbell tried to kill Miriam and the mid-wife who was protecting her so that the rape wouldn't become known. When he killed the mid-wife, Miriam got away and couldn't remember, later, what had happened to her. She was taken in by Cleo Anderson who mothered her and over the years she came to believe she'd suffered a miscarriage. Many years later when Miriam met and fell in love with Lucius she saw Campbell at a garden party. When she recognized him, and realized that he was Lucius's uncle, she ran away with the help of Treadwell. Campbell followed and killed Treadwell, but again, Miriam got away. He later killed Verona because Verona had figured out that her adopted son was really her brother's child by Miriam Gardiner.

Miriam and Lucius were mother and son.
