Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On which day of the week did the destruction of Earth occur?

Answer: Thursday

At the beginning of the book, Arthur wakes up and sees bulldozers trying to knock his house down. Then, his friend Ford tells him that the Earth is about to be demolished, which leads him to say "This must be Thursday. I never could get the hang of Thursdays."
2. How bad is Vogon poetry?

Answer: It's the third worst in the universe

Vogon poetry is the third worst in the universe. The Vogons themselves know it and use their poetry as a method of torture. The second worst was written by Azgoths of Kria, while the worst poetry of the whole universe was written by Paula Nancy Millstone Jennings of Greenbridge, Essex, England.
3. What does the "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" have to say about Earth?

Answer: Mostly Harmless

Before Ford's 15-year field researching on our, it used to say "Harmless". Then Ford wrote many things about earth, but the editors had to trim most of it because of a lack of space in the Guide's database. Now, after a revision, all they are left with is "Mostly harmless".
4. When Zaphod came on earth to gatecrash a party in Islington (also attended by Arthur and Trillian), what did he pretend his name was?

Answer: Phil

Arthur met Trillian at this party, but she eventually went off with Zaphod after he told her: "Hey doll, is this guy boring you? Why don't you talk to me instead? I'm from a different planet." I wouldn't be surprised if the party was on a Thursday...
5. Why didn't Ford believe Zaphod when he told him they were in orbit around Magrathea?

Answer: Because he didn't believe the planet existed

The legendary planet Magrathea used to manufacture custom planets for very rich people, millions of years ago. However, since nowadays people are not rich enough to afford planets, the whole of Magrathea was put to sleep only to awake when the economy would have recovered. Now, after many, many years of inactivity, no one believes the planet ever existed.
6. One of the Magrathean missiles aimed at the "Heart of Gold" was, as improbable as it seems, transformed into a bowl of petunias. What is the only thing that it thought before crashing on the surface of the planet?

Answer: "Oh no, not again."

We only understand why the bowl of petunias said that in the fourth book of the series. The other missile was transformed into a sperm whale which, unfortunately, didn't live very long. The sentence "I seem to be having tremendous difficulties with my lifestyle" is said by Arthur a little later.
7. What geographical feature did Slartibartfast particularly enjoy making when he built the earth?

Answer: Fjords

He reportedly built Norway and even got an award for it. For the construction of "Earth Mark Two", the planet supposed to replace Earth, he was assigned Africa and says he wants to put many fjords there too, even if everyone tells him that fjords are "not equatorial enough".
8. How long did the computer "Deep Thought" say it would have to think about the answer to the "Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe and Everything"?

Answer: Seven and a half million years

It turned out that the Answer was forty-two. According to "Deep Thought", the only way to understand the meaning of the answer is to find out what the actual question is. "Deep Thought" said it couldn't calculate what the Ultimate Question was so another computer was built, and this other computer was in fact the Earth.
9. Which of these was NOT mentioned as being in the catalogue of planets that Magrathea could create?

Answer: A planet with trees that grow money

The book also mentions a planet with purple sea, beaches of precious stones, red mountains and five hundred naked women parachuted on it. Later, a dark, gloomy planet where the air is filled with "the sounds of illusory beings murdering other illusory beings" is also described by the author.
10. What happened to the two cops who were after the gang at the end of the book?

Answer: The computer that kept them alive commited suicide

The two cops had come to arrest Zaphod because he had stolen the "Heart of Gold". While the gang was hiding from them, both dropped dead without warning. Ford was very intrigued when he saw the cops had so suddenly asphyxiated. Then, he asked Marvin what was going on and Marvin told him that he was just explaining his view of things to the cop's ship's computer, when it committed suicide.
